I have never run a marathon. My right knee gets sore when I drive 26.2 miles. That said, I have a lot of respect for people who have finished a marathon. My wife’s side of the family lives in Northeast Ohio and many of them have finished multiple marathons. They have even driven to other states to run in marathons in other cities. Inexplicable to me. Fun for them. Whether in person or on TV, you have seen marathon runners cross the finish line. Some of them have a big smile on their face, a pep in their step and look like they could keep running forever. On the other hand, others look disoriented and dehydrated and they stumble across the finish line and right into an ambulance. I think that the last day of school is very similar to the finish line of a marathon. Whether you walked, stumbled or sprinted across that finish line, you are about to do something that you shouldn’t do, yet… One of the worst things we can do as leaders is immediately shift into high gear getting ready for the next school year without reflecting on the year we just lived through.
