Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor but support roughly a quarter of all marine life. They are dying fast, and in many places, the physical structure of the reef itself has already crumbled away. Without that foundation, coral larvae have nowhere to land, and marine ecosystems cannot recover on their own. In this episode of Business For Good, Paul Shapiro talks with Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt, co-founder and CEO of rrreefs, about a new approach to ocean restoration. Instead of only growing coral in labs and transplanting it, rrreefs is 3D printing modular clay structures designed to replicate the hydrodynamics and habitat complexity of natural reef systems. These structures are anchored to the seafloor in degraded areas, and within months, coral larvae settle, invertebrate populations establish, and fish biomass increases by two to ten times compared to nearby unrestored areas.
