The apostle Paul presents a radical challenge to modern culture's emphasis on self-love, calling believers instead to follow God's example of sacrificial love. Writing from a Roman prison to the Ephesian church, Paul connects his teaching to the forgiveness we've received through Christ, explaining that because God has forgiven us, we must walk in agape love - the purest form of self-sacrificing love demonstrated when Jesus spread His arms wide on the cross. This message directly contradicts our culture's priority system that places self-love at the foundation of all relationships. Paul presents a completely different hierarchy: love God with everything you have, then love your neighbors as yourself. Self-love isn't even listed because it's assumed we naturally do that already.
