In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers — James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur — disappeared from the remote Flannan Isles off the coast of Scotland. Concern began when a passing ship noticed that the lighthouse was dark. When the relief vessel finally reached the island, no one came to greet the crew. Inside the lighthouse, signs suggested the men had left suddenly. One chair was overturned, the clock had stopped, and one waterproof jacket remained behind. A full search of the island found no bodies, footprints, or clear evidence of what had happened. The official investigation concluded that the keepers were probably swept into the sea by a massive wave while inspecting storm damage. However, unanswered questions remain. Why would all three men leave the lighthouse at once? Why did one apparently go outside without proper protection? And why was there no trace of any of them?
