In 1977, the Big Ear Radio Telescope in Ohio detected one of the most mysterious radio signals ever recorded. While reviewing the data, astronomer Jerry Ehman noticed an unusually strong signal sequence, "6EQUJ5," and wrote "Wow!" beside it — giving the event its famous name. The signal lasted about 72 seconds and appeared to come from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. What made it especially strange was its narrow frequency near the hydrogen line, a frequency scientists had long considered ideal for possible interstellar communication. Despite repeated attempts, the signal was never detected again. Scientists have proposed explanations including natural cosmic phenomena, space debris, or comet-related emissions, but none has been universally accepted. The possibility that it may have been a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization remains unproven, but the mystery continues to fascinate astronomers and the public alike. The Wow!
