| 6/20/26 | ![]() Free therapy for Black men | The “Queen of the Ring” at Blue Horizon boxing gym | Black men often find it hard to be vulnerable - they’re taught to be tough and not to show their feelings. But they struggle just as much as the rest of us. When two Black female clinicians noticed a high demand from Black men seeking therapy and facing barriers to access, they started Black Men Heal to offer free individual and group therapy programs for Black men. Racquel Williams talks with one of the co-founders, Zakia S. Williams. Learn more about their programs at www.blackmenheal.org. Then, Shara Dae Howard celebrates Juneteenth by diving into Philly’s Black history with the “Queen of the Ring”, Vernoka Michael - owner of the Blue Horizon boxing gym, where legends like Joe Frazier trained. The gym closed in 2010, but Vernoka is making sure its legacy lives on. | 33m 22s | ||||||
| 6/13/26 | ![]() Why “Black people don’t swim” and how we can change that | Building the FIFA Fan Festival | Throughout history, barriers have been put up between African Americans and water. Segregated swimming pools, violence and discrimination against Black folks who try to swim in public pools - all of this was documented in the “POOL” exhibit that was on display at Fairmount Water Works from 2022-2023 and has now been transformed into a mobile exhibit. Racquel Williams sits down with a few of the folks behind the exhibit and a legendary Philadelphia swim coach to discuss the history, as well as how to overcome a fear of water and learn to swim. Then, Shara Dae Howard gets a behind-the-scenes golf cart tour of the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill, where up to 15,000 people per day are expected to watch the World Cup games from now through July 19. Racquel Williams talks with Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of The Center for Black Educator Development, and Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies Curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia, about the 100-year legacy of Black History Month and the undeniable impact of Black teachers in the classroom. Plus, they tell us about their partnership on the Blackprint 20 summit earlier this month, which opened discussion on best practices for teaching Black history. Then, on Shara in the City, we're celebrating a victory for the legacy of Philadelphia's own boxing legend Smokin' Joe Frazier, whose statue is officially relocating from South Philly to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Racquel Williams speaks with them about what they’re hearing from the community and how they’re trying to bring people together to fight for equal rights for all. Then, Shara Dae Howard visits Face to Face, a neighborhood community center and safe haven for Germantown individuals and families experiencing poverty. | 1/3/26 | ![]() The climb for disability mental health | Fishtown’s creative heart | According to the CDC, adults with disabilities are three times more likely to report suicidal ideation than those without — a staggering statistic that drives the heart of the new documentary, Meandering Scars. In this episode, filmmaker Alison Norlean shares the story of Erica Bogan, a paraplegic athlete and survivor of domestic violence, who attempts the grueling climb up Mount Kilimanjaro to shine a light on the mental health crisis within the disability community. Ever wonder where Philly’s creators go to build their big ideas? Shara Dae Howard heads to NextFab’s Fishtown studio to check out their massive inventory of high-tech tools. Whether it's jewelry making, electronics, or woodworking, discover how this collaborative hub is fueling the next generation of Philadelphia creatives. | 30m 30s | ||||||
