Paul's dear friends Clay Eals and Jean Sherrard organized the event and served as emcees (emscee?). Speakers/performers included Ken Workman, Chief Seattle descendant, of the Duwamish Tribe; Mayor Katie Wilson of Seattle; Marie McCaffrey of HistoryLink; Ann Ferguson, retired Seattle Public Library "Seattle Room" Librarian; Washington Governor Bob Ferguson; folk musician Al Hirsch (performing “The Old Settler” - aka “Acres of Clams”); Bob Donegan, CEO of Ivar’s; Greg Nickels, former Seattle mayor and current HistoryLink board chair; Mike James, longtime newsman and anchor for KING TV and KIRO TV and old friend of Paul Dorpat; and Leonard Garfield, executive director of MOHAI. On this special BONUS NOW & THEN EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Clay Eals and Jean Sherrard of Seattle Now & Then and with Devlin Donnelly of the Port of Seattle about a rare photo from The Beatles’ 1966 Seattle visit. The image was recently re-discovered by Devlin Donnelly in the port’s archives, Clay and Jean chose it as the “Then” focus of their Now & Then column for The Seattle Times . . . and many more of them live next door. The column appears in print in the Sunday, August 30, 2026 edition of the newspaper; the online version was posted on Thursday, August 27, 2026. In this conversation, Devlin explains the origins of the photo, and Clay and Jean describe how they produced the “Now” image. Feliks Banel's guests on this ENCORE PRESENTATION of a LIVE REMOTE BROADCAST of CASCADE OF HISTORY from the June 26, 2025 farewell event for Seattle High School Memorial Stadium include Clay Eals and Jean Sherrard of the Seattle Times' Seattle Now & Then; Northwest sports historian and collector David Eskenazi; and music historian Eric Magnuson. The beloved 1947 stadium, deemed unworthy of landmark status by the City of Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board, has since been demolished and a shiny new stadium is being built in its place. The original structure, designed by noted architect George Stoddard, was dedicated in 1947 to the memory of 800+ Seattle Public Schools alums who died in World War II. Apart from bidding farewell to the doomed (not "domed") stadium, discussion also included the then-recent passing of Bobby Sherman, who played Jeremy Bolt on "Here Come The Brides" - the 1969-1971 TV series set in 1860s Seattle, which also spawned the song, "(The Bluest Skies You've Ever Seen Are In) Seattle." In separate interviews, each describes their experiences on the periphery of wildfires that hit the Spokane area on August 1, 2026. Ms. Wood also describes a recent history project to debunk a particularly persistent Spokane history myth. We also listen to vintage audio of the late, great Spokane-born broadcaster (and radio historian) Bill Brubaker, describing the role that local radio played in Roseburg, Oregon after the August 1958 dynamite blast that leveled the town (Bill and two college friends were there running a radio station that summer - they survived the blast and got on the air ASAP). Finally, we pay tribute to Todd Scott, longtime preservation architect for King County Historic Preservation and all around good guy, whose passing was announced a few days ago. The premise of “This NOT Just In” was to use archival audio to shed light on forgotten or not fully understood stories from Pacific Northwest history. In this second "This NOT Just In" Archival Revival, we hear about when President Harry Truman killed time at Mount Rainier in 1945 while waiting for the first meeting United Nations to get underway in San Francisco; the sad tale of Bobo the Gorilla and his time in Anacortes, Washington and at the Woodland Park Zoo in the 1950s and 1960s; and the one and only season of Major League Baseball’s Seattle Pilots in 1969. This material was originally produced by Feliks Banel with editing and other assistance from KUOW’s Jim Gates. “This NOT Just In” was initially awarded a Program Venture Fund grant from KUOW in 2009 which funded production of the first three episodes; KUOW ultimately green-lighted more than 30 additional episodes during the run of the series. The episodes remained online for many years, but most are no longer accessible via the KUOW website – so it seemed like a good time to share them once again as a public service. Feliks Banel's guests on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY are Gretchen Neidhardt and Hilarie Pozesky of the group Chicago Area Archivists. They are part of a grassroots effort to mobilize and halt the quietly announced closure of the Chicago branch of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). CASCADE OF HISTORY has been covering this story since an internal NARA memo was leaked in late June with details that have still not yet been shared publicly by NARA. That memo describes the closure of NARA regional archival facilities in Chicago, Illinois and San Bruno, California, and imminent removal of archival materials from both sites. Ms. Neidhardt and Ms. Pozesky describe how under the aegis of their professional association - Chicago Area Archivists - a group of concerned citizens is pushing back, and coordinating an effort to stop the closure. The Chicago team is also in contact with California-based Save Our National Archives (SONA), a group which has been featured on previous episodes of CASCADE OF HISTORY and which is fighting to prevent closure of the San Bruno NARA facility. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Paula Johnson, Senior Archaeologist and Director-at-Large based in the Seattle office of WillametteCRA (CRA stands for “Cultural Resources Associates”). In this conversation, recorded on July 23, 2026, Johnson describes how the federal historic preservation regulations known as Section 106 work, and then outlines the threat facing 60 years of precedent in how the federal government treats historically significant resources. She also describes how the historic preservation community is mobilizing to push back against what amounts to a gutting of the rules - including elimination of public notice and input and tribal consultation - and how concerned citizens can get involved.
