About this episode

This episode features a mix of music from Cabo Verde and surrounding countries, reflecting the cultural and historical ties between them.

This mix was recorded ahead of a trip to Cabo Verde and played on a loop to soundtrack our travels around the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão. A terra estimata with epic landscapes and traumatic history, home to the nicest people who live and breathe music on a daily basis. Truly a special place. Though mainly focused on the many musical styles which came out of Cabo Verde (morna, koladera, funana, batuque), this also includes some music from Angola, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe as these countries are bonded not only by history, a shared liberation struggle for independence (as led by the Pan-Africanist revolutionary Amílcar Lopes Cabral who masterminded the end of Portuguese rule in Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde), but also inevitably the constant and numerous cross cultural musical exchanges between them (see Bonga's "Mulemba Xangola" for instance, an infectious semba cut by Angola's legendary artist Bonga , which features Lura from Cape Verde). Tracklist: - Cesaria Evora - Cabo Verde Terra Estimada - Mendes & Mendes - Grito Di Bo Fidje - Paulino Vieira - Prêci Di Um Fidjo - Leonel - Balançá - Armindo - Dormi Na Cozinha - Carlos Pop - Coitada - Conjunto Voz…
