| 6/22/26 | ![]() Who’s Joel Brennan? He might be Wisconsin’s next governor | Milfred and Hands talk with Joel Brennan, one of the least known Democratic candidates for governor with the most executive experience. Brennan has been far back in the polls and didn’t do well in the straw poll at the recent Democratic Party convention. Yet he’s raising a lot of money and starting to tout his impressive resume in TV ads and at campaign stops across the state. Brennan was secretary of the Department of Administration under Gov. Tony Evers and considers himself a “pragmatic progressive.” “You cut me open,” Brennan says, “I’m going to have Wisconsin values.” He understands that he needs to introduce himself to a lot of Wisconsin voters before the Democratic primary on Aug. 11 because of low name recognition. “That’s the thing I’m up against in this race more than anything else,” he says. The likeable Brennan ran the state’s largest science museum before joining the Evers administration and then leading a Milwaukee business and civic leadership group. He’s fed up with President Donald Trump, but says that’s not good enough for the state’s next governor, even though the Republican president is unpopular because of his war and rising prices. “If what people are looking for is just somebody who wants to howl in the wind about what’s going with Donald Trump, there are plenty of us who can do that,” he says. “But for me, it’s never enough just to be angry. It’s got to be about how do you use that to get something done.” Milfred and Hands ask him about schools, taxes, gerrymandering and his favorite card game. | 53m 41s | ||||||
| 6/4/26 | ![]() Francesca Hong wants to 'get sh-t done' as Wisconsin governor | Milfred and Hands talk with Democratic candidate for governor Francesca Hong about raising the minimum wage, instituting a wealth tax and smoking cigars with Republicans. Hong surprised many people by leading early polls for the Democratic nomination among a crowded field of candidates. But can a democratic socialist who represents the ultra-progressive Isthmus and East Side of Madison appeal to voters statewide in Wisconsin? Hong says she's exciting younger voters and others who want an outsider candidate. "They see me as the working-class person, the everyday person because I am," she says. "I don't think I'm better than anyone else." The restauranteur turned state Assemblywoman could win the party's nomination Aug. 11 with around 27% of the primary vote, she says. Milfred and Hands ask about her past statements about defunding police as well as her biggest accomplishment in the Legislature and top priority if elected to lead the state. | 48m 55s | ||||||
| 5/26/26 | ![]() David Crowley says Republicans fear him most for Wisconsin governor | Milfred and Hands talk to David Crowley about his bid for Wisconsin governor, which he says the GOP fears because of his broader appeal. He won reelection as Milwaukee County executive with 85% of the vote. But only 16% of voters in the Madison region know who he is, according to the Marquette Law School poll. That could change soon, because Crowley led Democrats in fundraising the last time numbers were reported, allowing him to spend money on advertising. Crowley touts his record of improving the finances of Wisconsin's largest county while reducing homelessness. | 48m 45s | ||||||
| 4/26/26 | ![]() Kelda Roys wants to 'build what comes next' in Wisconsin | Milfred and Hands talk with state Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, about her bid for governor. Roys says she's the most experienced leader with results who best measures up against presumptive Republican nominee U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Minoqua. "I'm the candidate who can actually say, 'Here's what I've done,' not just 'Here are my ideas that I've never been able to accomplish.'" She touts her endorsement from the state teachers union, her independence and favorite Wisconsin supper club. | 44m 07s | ||||||

| 3/23/25 | ![]() Run, Tony, Run? Or done? | Milfred and Hands analyze Gov. Tony Evers' prospects for a third term, should he decide to run for governor again next year. Only one governor in state history -- Tommy Thompson -- has served a third (and part of a fourth) term. Milfred thinks Evers could be well-positioned as the antithesis to President Donald Trump. Hands isn't so sure, suggesting the left is hungry for new faces and younger blood. Evers recently met with the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board, talking about his future, school testing and cellphone distractions. | 25m 26s | ||||||
| 2/22/25 | ![]() What's behind Derrick Van Orden's impeachment ploy? | Milfred and Hands impugn U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden's impeachment ploy. The Prairie du Chien Republican wants to throw a federal judge out of office for daring to stall one of President Donald Trump's priorities in court. The New York judge paused the Trump administration's attempt to scour the Treasury Department's payment system, which houses the Social Security and bank account numbers for millions of Americas. Van Orden's incredibly low bar for impeachment is that the judge "may have" been politically biased. It doesn't look like Van Orden's absurd proposal is drawing much support, even from fellow Republicans. The real goal appears to be pleasing Trump and his billionaire buddy Elon Musk, who could make or break Van Orden's reelection bid next year. Hands praises Van Orden's waredrobe. Milfred wonders if Van Orden is a lumbersexual. | 15m 44s | ||||||
| 2/8/25 | ![]() Ron Johnson vs. Donald Trump on tariffs | U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, calls tariffs a tax. President Donald Trump says they'll make Americans rich and powerful. It's a tale of two tariffs. Milfred and Hands break down the (so far) polite fray on trade between Wisconsin's senior senator and his party's president who backed off -- for at least 30 days -- on imposing 25% tariffs on trading partners and neighbors Canada and Mexico. | 22m 45s | ||||||
| 12/7/24 | ![]() Jay Rothman on UW funding, free speech, football money and 'Marxist maniacs' | Milfred and Hands play clips from the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board's meeting last week with Jay Rothman, the "change agent" president of the Universities of Wisconsin. Rothman touts his $855 billion request for increased funding from the Legislature. In many ways, his business-like pitch should resonate with the GOP. Milfred asks about President-elect Donald Trump slamming "Marxist maniacs" on campus. He also gets Rothman's take on multimillion-dollar payouts to fired college football coaches. Hands gives the president advice on talking point and ponders the fate of legendary losing football coach Don Morton. | 31m 46s | ||||||
| 11/9/24 | ![]() Wisconsin is still the deep purple state | Milfred and Hands analyze Donald Trump's comeback win for the White House and why Wisconsin voters also chose progressive U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, who in many ways is his polar opposite. Our political podcasters try to temper lefty Madison's loss by talking up checks and balances as well as states' rights. Milfred loves Trump's flip-flop on electric cars, now that Trump's bromance with Elon Musk has blossomed. | 35m 08s | ||||||
| 10/17/24 | ![]() Tammy Baldwin seeks the Wisconsin State Journal's endorsement | Milfred and Hands unpack the Wisconsin State Journal's endorsement meeting with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, who is being challenged by her seat in the Nov. 5 election by Republican businessman Eric Hovde. The race in this closely watched swing state could decide control of the Senate. Baldwin touts the bill she is pushing with Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance to demonstrate her bipartisan cred. She also criticizes her opponent as an out-of-touch , out-of-state wealthy banker. | 30m 23s | ||||||
| 10/12/24 | ![]() Eric Hovde seeks the Wisconsin State Journal's endorsement | Milfred and Hands play audio clips from and comment on the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board's endorsement meeting with U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde. | 43m 41s | ||||||
| 9/22/24 | ![]() Why do so many farmers back Trump? | Milfred and Hands interview Brian Reisinger, the Sauk County author of "Land Rich, Cash Poor," who worked for big-name Republicans such as Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson. He offers a clear-minded assessment of rural economics, politics and culture, based on his own family's challenges. | 50m 42s | ||||||
| 8/10/24 | ![]() Tim Walz vs. JD Vance in Wisconsin: Who won? | Milfred and Hands assess the Middle America cred of both presidential candidates's salty surrogates. Both VP picks visited Eau Claire, talking guns, drugs, inflation, freedom and what's really weird. Our political podcasters play clips and comment each candidate's points and provocations. Wisconsin is giong to be seeing a lot more of these two, who play better here in many ways than either of their Coastie leaders. | 30m 06s | ||||||
| 7/28/24 | ![]() Kamala Harris woos Wisconsin. Will it work? | Milfred and Hands play clips from and analyze Vice President Kamala Harris' speech last week in West Allis. They also assess her chances of winning Wisconsin in November, now that she's the Democrats' presumptive nominee. Harris is a far better campaigner than Joe Biden had been in recent months, bringing some needed energy to the ticket. Yet she faces skepticism from many Midwestern voters. | 22m 08s | ||||||
| 6/23/24 | ![]() Madison's new school leader: 'Zero tolerance isn't zero care' | Milfred and Hands play audio clips from the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board's meeting with Madison's new school superintendent, Joe Gothard. The Madison native, former La Follette coach and principal who left the Capitol City for Minnesota and ran the bigger St. Paul, Minnesota, school district. Now he's back for the top job here. Gothard talks about prioritizing all-day 4K, making Madison a "destination district" for families, and says he'll have zero tolerance for guns in school. "Zero tolerance isn't zero care about a human being. But it is about holding people accountable for the rules and expectations we have in school. And I want to be very clear about that." | 27m 34s | ||||||
