| 5/23/21 | ![]() Interview with Jean-Luc Martin, Founder of San Diego Circus Center | Circus Voices, a podcast brought to you by CircusTalk, is pleased to present an interview with Jean-Luc Martin on Audio Explorations with the Editor. Jean-Luc Martin on Growing a US Circus School, Audio Explorations with the Editor Our guest on the podcast today is Jean-Luc Martin, founder and executive director of San Diego Circus School. Martin is a graduate of the National circus school in Montreal, and during the course of his performance career he performed with the Pickle Family Circus, Circus Knie and Cirque du Soleil. The young Martin started life as an adventurer-- kayaking, rock climbing and hiking. He worked for Outward Bound, Search & Rescue Northern Ontario, and Yosemite National Park before he discovered circus. He has the opportunity to earn his true circus chops by working with The Pickle Family Circus where Martin says, "I trained teeterboard, acrobatics, trapeze, and handstands, and after two years of hard, dedicated, focused work, I decided to test my abilities and audition for École Nationale de Cirque. I was accepted, and after two years at ENC, Cirque du Soleil hired me. Fifteen years later, I retired from circus and turned to Hollywood, becoming a stunt man and a film producer. During this time, I met my wife Mara, had two children, and then decided to leave the rat race of 18 hour days of film producing, to go back to my passion, which was circus. San Diego Circus Center was officially born in 2012, and I’m looking forward to continuing, and always building, a formidable circus school in North America." Listen in for Martin's sage advice on balancing one's career, life-training balance, finding your circus talent, and more. He also shares the strategies that led to the circus education programs and curriculum he offers at San Diego Circus Center Academy, including the Pre-preparatory (youth), Preparatory (emerging professional), Pro-track (artists advancing skills), and their 5-week Master Youth Intensive course.
