About this episode

The episode discusses the themes of submission and love in marriage as presented in Ephesians 5, drawing parallels with Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew'.

Today I was reminded of another Shakespearean play, The Taming of the Shrew. A shrew is a small mole-like creature with a long pointy nose. In English culture a naggy annoying wife is likened to a shrew. In Shakespeare's play of this name, a man manages to change his perpetually naggy wife to one who advises other ladies to submit to their respective husbands. What a transformation. However, what I want to focus on are the verses in Ephesians 5, in which Apostle Paul counsels women to submit to their wives and for husbands to love their wives as they do their own selves. We tend to be aghast at these instructions but we are told that it is a "profound mystery" (verse 32). No wonder we don't understand so, as such, we may not agree with the instructions and certainly not be able to follow them. However, what we really can note is that Jesus, as our bridegroom, totally follows these instructions. He loves us unconditionally and wonderfully. Let us submit to Him. I was going to say "without question" but actually we are free to question God. Wait for His answers.
