About this episode
This episode explores the trials of Jesus, emphasizing immersion in the story rather than seeking relevance.
I’ll let you in on a secret. Pastors these days spend too much time trying to figure out the “relevance” of Bible passages. Ours is, of course, a world vastly different than the one in Bible times. Jesus never faced time traffic issues, blatant individualism, or rapid technological change. But relevance is hard to find and is often forced. Should we seek emotional relevance between the way Jesus felt and the way we do? (When Jesus wept, was it in grief for a friend who would moments later be raised to life, or because of unbelief?) Should we look for topical parallels between life situations then and these days? (Legal trials then vs the law today? Feeding a crowd of 5000 with no food and no restaurants?) Today’s passage doesn’t offer relevance. It offers immersion. We are inside the story at the trials of Jesus. Our voices sound forth. Our daily choices are on display. Our lives are on the stand. Come, see yourself. Then, come and worship.
