The jury deliberated for three hours. Their verdict would haunt this case for one hundred and fifty years: "Willful murder by person or persons unknown." Murder--but no murderer. Four suspects. Four possible killers. And no way to know which one poisoned Charles Bravo. The Victim Charles Bravo died on April 21st, 1876. On August 12th, after twenty-three days of testimony, the jury confirmed what his family had always believed: he was murdered. But they could not--or would not--name the killer. This was not acquittal. Florence Bravo, Jane Cannon Cox, and Dr. James Manby Gully walked free not because they were innocent, but because the evidence against each was insufficient for prosecution.
