| 11/14/23 | ![]() Episode 22: Ramba (Part IV) | We discuss the most frustrating aspect of Ramba’s rescue- Why did it take so long? We dive into details about permits, including those required internationally by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) but also within Brazil (IBAMA). There is no classification for sanctuaries in Brazil, and no recent elephant imports, which means standards and protocols need to be created. Blood tests on Ramba show she is suffering from the early stages of kidney failure, which require a strict diet and the use of different modalities to support her body. Ramba's care team is dedicated to giving their grandma elephant the best care possible while - unbeknownst to her - everybody is doing what they can to get her to the sanctuary. 🎄🎁 We mentioned several ways you can support the elephants this holiday season: Become an Ele Guardian to your favorite elephant(s) here. Shop at our online store here. Enjoy a full year of sanctuary with our 2024 wall calendar. You can make a donation in honor here. Thank you so much for supporting the elephants! | 10/31/23 | ![]() Episode 21: Ramba (Part III) | 🎃 Join our Pachyderm Pumpkin Party fundraiser here. This week, we talk about Ramba’s first days at her temporary home after the circus. Scott recalls how Ramba settled into her new home very quickly, enjoying the space, the trees, and the mud. Caregivers assigned to Ramba needed training since they had never worked with an elephant or with protected contact training, which was necessary for the sanitary requirements to import to the U.S. We also talk about Parque Safari, a small roadside zoo that provided the space for Ramba. The safety standards in place for the park’s animals were a little frightening as Kat recalls; but while it’s easy to point out the faults, the owner of the Parque Safari stepped up to provide the land, knowing that they would not be able to make money off her as they might have liked. When The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee announces that they will not take Ramba, her future seems uncertain, especially regarding financing Ramba’s care. The episode transcript can be found here. | 10/17/23 | ![]() Episode 20: Ramba (Part II) | Ramba (Part 2) - Today we dive straight into resolving the cliffhanger we left you with last time. Scott admits that talking about Ramba’s rescue from the circus in our last episode really brought up old memories about how difficult the entire operation really was. Under the circumstances, Ramba was fairly relaxed. The rescue team and the circus people were each waiting in their corners for the judge’s ruling to arrive. And when it does, it is a challenge: the colonel of the military police is being sent to oversee the rescue, and the team only has until the end of the day to get Ramba to load into the transport container. Tensions rise, the sun begins to set, and the colonel taps on his watch indicating what everyone knows. And then, Ramba effortlessly backs into the containers and relief washes over the rescue team. With the final challenge of loading the container onto the truck, Ramba leaves the circus premises for the last time, with the police following closely behind. Arriving at the Park Safari, a few more small hurdles need to be overcome before Ramba can be released into her 2-acre enclosure, where she starts to graze, dust herself with dirt, and finally lies down to sleep. Although not at the sanctuary yet, this is her new home. Episode transcript: can be found here. | 10/3/23 | ![]() Episode 19: Ramba (Part I) | Ramba (Part 1) - Known as the “Last circus elephant in Chile”, Ramba was confiscated from a circus due to neglect and abuse. Yet, with nowhere to go, she remains in the custody of the circus. Scott & Kat recall how her rescue really must be credited to the small animal welfare organization, Ecopolis, who had been campaigning for Ramba’s release for years before Scott & Kat arrived on the scene to assist with her actual relocation. Ramba’s move from the circus to her temporary home at Parque Safari was indeed the most difficult and challenging so far. Scott describes how the judge’s ruling left them with only 4 days to load Ramba into a less-than-ideal transport crate. We end the episode on a cliffhanger as the tension between rescuers and the circus rises and threatens to turn into a physical fight. The episode transcript can be found here. | 9/19/23 | ![]() Episode 18: Rana (Part III) | Episode 18 Rana (Part 3) - In our third and final episode on Rana, Scott & Kat share how they truly noticed the lessons Rana had learned about friendship when the sanctuary’s fourth elephant, Ramba, arrived. Eager not to make the same mistakes as with Guida & Maia, we talk about how Rana kept her exuberance to herself, not wanting to touch Ramba and possibly annoy or scare her. Yet Ramba was looking for guidance to know how to behave from the elephants already at the sanctuary. It was Maia who broke the ice by touching Ramba first; with this clear sign, Rana opened up to embrace her new sister with much love and affection. Kat recalls how Ramba, who was well over 60 years old, explored every part of the sanctuary, often leaving Rana behind when she couldn’t keep up. A beautiful friendship between the two grandmother elephants touched the hearts of all at the sanctuary. Episode transcript: can be found here. | 9/5/23 | ![]() Episode 17: Rana (Part II) | Rana (Part 2) - One of our listeners sent us the question, “How do elephants feel about the humans they interact with?” In this episode, we talk about facilitating what an elephant needs on an emotional and physical level without crossing the boundaries of forcing ourselves onto them. Scott and Kat recall how Maia and Guida didn’t ask for much affection from their humans - possibly because of their strong relationship - while Rana is an elephant who does ask for physical contact before her time in the treatment chute. Again, it comes down to reading the room, listening, observing, and seeing what an elephant needs on a daily basis for their recovery. We also talk about how things changed after Guida’s sudden death and how Rana had begun to understand what being a true friend was as she put aside her needs in order to be there for Maia on her terms. | 8/22/23 | ![]() Episode 16: Rana (Part I) | Episode 16 Rana (Part 1) - Meet Rana (pronounced Hana), the sanctuary’s third elephant and also a former circus elephant. She arrived at the sanctuary on Dec 21, 2018. Scott recalls how they heard rumours of a solitary elephant living on the grounds of a hotel on the east coast of Brazil. Luckily, the new hotel owner wanted a better life for Rana and so, after a short period of getting used to the transport crate, Scott, Rana, and their team set off on the long journey home. Solitary for most of her life, Rana embraced sanctuary and her new sisters. Upon her arrival, Guida and Maia were strongly bonded and not quite ready to let their exuberant new sister into the mix. Being shunned initially by the two, Rana learned lessons about how to interact with other elephants and is now the most influential elephant in her own unique passive way - and she has become the elephant who assists new arrivals with easing into a new life at sanctuary. Physically, Rana came with an extremely infected vulva which needed immediate attention and she has a fused left elbow from an accident from her circus years. Watch the first video of Rana’s rescue trip here. Read more about Rana on our website. The episode transcript can be found here. | 8/8/23 | ![]() Episode 15: Guida & Maia Part IV | Guida & Maia (Part 4) - In this week’s podcast we start off by saying “THANK YOU” to all of our wonderful listeners & introduce the independent Facebook support group ‘Friends of Global Sanctuary for Elephants’. We talk about the connection of physical and emotional healing of Guida & Maia. The sanctuary’s diverse topography of hills, creeks, and grasslands doesn’t only stimulate muscle building, but also reconnects long unused and shut down senses of sight, smell, and hearing, all of which builds confidence. Scott shares how Guida & Maia built a slide down to the creek despite there being an easier way to cross. Scott: “Sanctuary is the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” and we end talking about Guida’s sudden passing on June 25, 2019. We do finish on a brighter note, introducing Rana, the next elephant to be rescued, who we will talk more about in our next episode. Join Friends of Global Sanctuary for Elephants on Facebook. | 7/25/23 | ![]() Episode 14: Guida & Maia Part III | Episode 14 Guida & Maia Part III - Kat & Scott share more stories on Guida & Maia’s development from who they were upon arrival at ESB (Elephant Sanctuary Brazil) and who they really are. Scott recalls how today Maia, after her nightly explorations, falls into her morning-zombie mode, often napping in the treatment chute, though it was initially a place that caused shaking from fear and anxiety. Listening and understanding what Maia was communicating was vital to building up mutual trust. With Guida becoming more confident and not tolerating Maia invading her space, Maia learned that she had to honor Guida’s wishes (and sometimes defer) to Guida; if she wanted to be friends with Guida, she needed to respect her. We talk about how their relationship grew as the development of the yards gave both elephants more space and the opportunity to discover themselves by having room to explore. This map of the Female Asian habitat will give you a good overview and help you navigate around the sanctuary when we talk about the different yards. Also, the sizes of football fields may help you gauge the size of the yards in the female Asian habitat: 1) American football field incl. surrounding areas: approx. 1.23 acres & 2) European football (soccer) field between 0.6 - 0.8 acres. | 7/11/23 | ![]() Episode 13: Guida and Maia Part II | Episode 13 Guida & Maia (Part 2) - Kat & Scott share their memories of Guida & Maia’s first steps off the transport crates after a safe and smooth journey to the sanctuary. Due to their difficult relationship, Guida & Maia spent their first night in separate stalls in the elephant care center. Yet it seemed that the magic of sanctuary had already enveloped the two elephants, as Kat recalls her and Scott sleeping on hay bales next to the care center and being woken up frequently during the night by loud trumpets & rumbles. With the safety of the elephants always in their focus, Kat shares how they opened up the gates and let both elephants into yard one after only 24 hours. A shift between Guida and Maia had taken place, and Guida astonished everyone by seemingly taking charge. But it will take a few more months for this superficial bonding to turn into a true friendship, leaving behind decades of trauma and aggression. | 6/27/23 | ![]() Episode 12: Guida and Maia Part I | Episode 12 Guida & Maia (Part 1) - Female Asian elephants Guida & Maia, ex-circus elephants, were the first who got to experience the magic of sanctuary in Brazil. Confiscated from the circus but with no suitable place to go, they had spent 5 years chained up on the prosecutor’s farm. Scott & Kat share their first encounters with the two elephants and how, through observation, they began to understand each individual’s character. Big, bossy Maia, dubbed the “bad elephant” by the circus, was tense and always ready to lash out, while Guida, labeled the “good elephant,” was seriously underweight and lost in her own world, trying to cope with her life through stereotypic swaying. We talk about how the transport crates were explored with great interest by both elephants and how, with a longer chain, Guida entered a new world for a few hours. Kat explains why their elephant transports are not carried out like those in Asia, and also explains why elephants are not sedated for transport, nor do they leave the crates until they get to the sanctuary. It is all done on elephant time and, when Guida & Maia were comfortable enough, the doors of the transport crates were closed, and their journey to healing began. | 6/13/23 | ![]() Episode 11: Developing the Property for the First Elephants | Episode 11 Developing the property for the first elephants - The magnificent property is secured, but the pressure is still on with the sanctuary’s first elephants Guida & Maia waiting for their happy end. Learn how Scott & Kat explored the property on foot as there was no money for a 4-wheeler or car - with the main focus being to find the ideal area for building the female Asian habitat. Despite years of experience in building elephant barns, Scott shares how things are done differently in Brazil. From flooded roads hindering the delivery of steel, to fundraising, obtaining permits, and the elephant transport crates leaving the property with their paint coat drying, everything does finally come together in just 10 months, as the alternative would have meant Guida & Maia being sent as an attraction to an aquarium in Sao Paulo. | 6/6/23 | ![]() Episode 10: Meet the Team- Rebecca Rodriguez | Episode 10 Meet the Team - Rebecca Rodriguez - In today’s podcast we have Rebecca Rodriguez, Development Director for GSE, as our special guest. As a non-profit organization, GSE’s work relies on private donations and grants, and Rebecca talks about how this work to make the magic of sanctuary possible is very close to her heart. She also shares her insights and impressions of her first ever visit to the sanctuary. Find out about a toad who loved to live in her boots and two unexpected late night visitors. Scott and Rebecca reflect on how the climate and the sanctuary property are not only home to the elephants but also to an increasing wildlife population including tapirs, deers, and many bird species. The ideal climate means that no large heated structures are needed to further develop the property, but really only steel fencing which would make sanctuary possible for South America’s 35 remaining captive elephants. | 5/16/23 | ![]() Episode 8: Sanctuary Sweet Sanctuary | Episode 8 Sanctuary Sweet Sanctuary - Despite much support from the local mayor, Tocantins is just not the right area of Brazil for the sanctuary. Kat and Scott share how they decided to move to the Mato Grosso region and how - after looking at many properties - they always ended up back at the current sanctuary property. With the universe obviously nudging them to this magnificent property and Ramba still waiting for her happy end, the property price of one million USD seemed an unattainable goal. But the magic of sanctuary puts like-minded people with generous hearts on the path of Scott and Kat until finally, their dream of starting a sanctuary for captive elephants in South America crosses its last hurdle. Watch the video of Lady and her bird friends Scott mentions here. The episode transcript can be found here. | 5/2/23 | ![]() Episode 7: Elephant Stories & Communication II | In this episode, we take a closer look at elephant communication and explore the intricacies that Kat and Scott have observed during the elephants' journeys toward physical and mental healing. We delve into the concept of face value trauma and examine why sometimes elephants resort to stereotypic behaviors, such as head bobbing and swaying, as a coping mechanism for the trauma they have experienced in circuses or zoos. Although recovery from these overt behaviors can be used to measure an elephant's healing, Scott and Kat also share their thoughts and insights on how they observe a deeper level of healing on a daily basis - one that involves the heart and soul and is much harder to quantify. | 4/18/23 | ![]() Episode 6: Just Keep Laughing | Moving to a new country brings many challenges including cultural ones. Scott & Kat share some more funny and entertaining stories and anecdotes on their new home. We look at more properties including ‘Hundred cows’, ‘Fruit tree confusion’, ‘Beautiful birds’ and the shocking ‘Cow graveyard’. Scott’s romantic declaration of love to Kat shows how their strong relationship took them through these challenging times when things were not developing in a linear way, and land deal after land deal was falling through. But we do end on a happy note with GSE finding their current property by chance online. The episode transcript can be found here. | 4/4/23 | ![]() Episode 5: How it Nearly All Fell Through | It’s time to pack our suitcases as we move from America to Brazil on June 24, 2014. In this episode Scott & Kat talk about how only 24 hours after arriving in Brazil, the money they were promised to start the sanctuary wouldn’t be available after all - nor would the car. Most importantly, the deal for sanctuary land fell through. But giving up was not an option as Ramba, the elephant confiscated by the authorities in Chile, was counting on them. | 3/21/23 | ![]() Episode 4: Keeping an Open Perspective | Episode 4 Keeping an open perspective: Kat & Scott explain how they shifted the focus from captive elephants not only in South America, but globally, thus leading to the founding of GSE. While replicating TES (which Scott co-founded) might have seemed an obvious choice, other options like a halfway home in South America with the final destination in Cambodia were also considered before settling on Brazil, as 35 of the 50 captive elephants were located here. Listen to two funny and interesting stories of the many properties Scott & Kat looked at during their 30-day stay in Brazil. Back home in the US, it soon becomes clear that finalizing land deals via emails and phone calls was not going to work. A higher level of commitment was necessary, and their promise to Ramba was still waiting to be fulfilled. The episode transcript can be found here. | 3/7/23 | ![]() Episode 3: Elephant Stories & Communication | In this episode, we talk more about the ways that Scott & Kat observed the elephants at TES (The Elephant Sanctuary in TN) on a daily basis and how, as they showed the elephants they were paying attention to what was being communicated, the elephants began to open up and reveal more of themselves over time. We touch on the complexities of listening, seeing, and understanding the nuances of elephant communication (a topic for several episodes). While it is now more common to call for captive elephants to be sent to sanctuary, 10 years ago this was not the case. The individual recovery stories of sanctuary elephants have shaped how society views the life of captive elephants and what their lives in captivity could and should look like. | 2/21/23 | ![]() Episode 2: Leaving TES & the Last Circus Elephant in Chile | In our 2nd episode, Scott & Kat talk about the face value of elephant trauma and how it wasn’t until they saw the magnitude of recovery possible at sanctuary that they realized how deep the impact of harmful captivity had been on each elephant’s soul. We talk about their brief elephant-free months after leaving the sanctuary in Tennessee, in 2011, until meeting the last circus elephant in Chile, Ramba, made them realize that they were destined to dedicate their lives toward elephant care.
