| 3/10/25 | Ep 22. Mastering the Short Game: Golf Drills & Games with Nick Zaher | Improving Golf Skills With TrainingNick and Ben discussed the importance of effective training for golfers, particularly as the season is about to start. Nick emphasized the need for quality practice rather than just hitting balls, and shared some exercises and drills to improve iron striking. He also mentioned the concept of the "10,000 hours rule" and the idea of a "constraints-led approach to coaching". Ben agreed to try some of these exercises on the range before moving to the course. Finding the Optimal Golf Swing FocusNick and Ben discuss the importance of having a "one-point swing thought" to focus on during the golf swing. They emphasize that different golfers may need to find their own specific one-point focus that works best for them, such as feeling the clubface or hand position throughout the swing. Nick suggests having an "arsenal" of potential one-point focuses to choose from, as the optimal focus can change from day to day or even during a round. Ben mentions a coach who encourages players to actively switch between 3-4 different one-point focuses during a round to keep the mind engaged. Improving Golf Skills and StrategiesNick and Ben discussed various golfing strategies and games to improve their skills. Nick suggested playing with forward tees to practice driving and iron play, and playing with irons only to improve ball striking. He also recommended a pitch test game to sharpen the short game. Ben agreed, emphasizing the importance of practicing the third shot and the need to mix up games to keep golf exciting. They also discussed the importance of setting expectation levels and using PGA tourstats to gauge performance. Nick proposed a game called "When the Iron is Hot" where players commit to hitting their driver on every hole, regardless of the distance. They ended the conversation with a discussion on the benefits of playing alone on the course for meditation and practice. Improving Skills Through Goal SettingNick and Ben discussed the importance of setting goals and creating habits to improve one's skills, particularly in golf. Nick emphasized the need for accountability and consistency, suggesting that writing down one's plans and sticking to them can lead to success. Ben shared his experience of using a journal to track his progress and set daily goals. They also discussed various games and exercises to improve short game skills, such as "walk the dog" and "chipping to the flag". The conversation ended with Nick suggesting that tracking the number of shots taken to complete a task could help identify areas for improvement. Exploring Golf With Fun ChallengesBen and Nick discussed the importance of having fun and exploring new experiences in golf. They suggested various games and challenges to spice up the game, such as practicing left-handed, playing with half a set of clubs, and playing with odd and even irons. They emphasized that these games are not just for those looking to improve their skills, but also for those who simply want to enjoy the game more. Nick also shared his experience of playing with a limited set of clubs and how it helped him make better decisions on the course. The conversation concluded with Ben agreeing that these games are more fun and can make the real game of golf easier. Precision Breathing for Golf AnxietyNick and Ben discussed the importance of managing nerves and anxiety during golf games. Nick introduced the concept of precision breathing, a technique that involves breathing through the nose for four seconds, holding for four seconds, and then breathing out for four seconds. This technique, he explained, helps to calm the nervous system and unlock one's capabilities. Ben agreed with Nick's suggestions and emphasized the importance of learning this technique as the golf season approaches. They also discussed the potential benefits of using the Europe Pro app, which offers guided breathing exercises and can be used for free with the code ZGolf. | — | ||||||

We can use it to step out of our auto pilot way of thinking and being. Some thoughts on how to have a mindful day On waking focus on your breathing for a few moments before you rise Continue having a shower, cleaning your teeth mindfully getting ready for the day Pencil in your diary a meeting with yourself at a particular time each day so that you can sit quietly and breath mindfully for a few minutes Decide to do the breathing practice a few times a day, perhaps every time you wash your hands, when you have a drink of tea or coffee Those moments that in the past that would have led to frustration or annoyance like being stuck in traffic of waiting for someone can now be used to simply take in your surroundings, really seeing life as it presents itself in that moment And when the day is coming to an end you may want to note down in your diary or your journal your EGS of the day E what did you Enjoy today G What are you grateful for today S What are you satisfied with today Before you switch off the light connect with your body, notice your breathing and smile to yourself. 5-4-3-2-1 technique It involves identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. By doing so, it helps shift your focus from anxiety-provoking thoughts to the present moment. Why does the 5-4-3-2-1 coping technique work? The 5-4-3-2-1 method works because it engages multiple senses, requiring you to concentrate on the present environment rather than dwell on anxiety-inducing thoughts. This interrupts the fight or flight response, calming the nervous system and reducing symptoms of anxiety or stress almost immediately. Moreover, it can serve as the first step toward long-term coping strategies for mental wellness. | — | ||||||
