| 6/22/26 | ![]() From Oral Narration to Essay Writing: A Charlotte Mason Approach with Karen Glass | If you’ve ever wondered how to help your child move from oral narration to written narration (and eventually into formal essay writing) this conversation with Karen Glass is exactly what you need.Karen Glass, a longtime homeschool educator and Charlotte Mason expert, breaks down the entire writing journey in a clear, practical, and encouraging way.Karen explains what narration really is, why it matters, and how it naturally builds the foundation for strong writing skills. She walks through when to introduce written narration, what it should look like in the early stages, and how to avoid common pitfalls that frustrate both parents and students. One of the most helpful parts of this conversation is learning how to manage expectations. Many homeschool parents feel discouraged when written narrations don’t match the richness of their child’s oral narrations. Karen explains why this is completely normal and how writing develops over time with consistency and patience. You’ll also learn:When to transition from oral to written narrationWhy you should never stop oral narrationHow to handle spelling, grammar, and handwritingWhat realistic expectations look like for young writersHow to build consistency in your homeschool writing routineWhen your child is ready for formal essay writingSimple steps to introduce composition and structureWhy editing is the key to strong writingHow to help your child care about writing as a craftKaren also shares how narration naturally leads into composition, making formal essay writing far less intimidating than many parents expect. By focusing on clear communication, structure, and revision, students can grow into confident writers without the need for complicated programs. If you’re homeschooling using Charlotte Mason methods (or simply want a more natural, effective approach to teaching writing) this episode will give you both clarity and confidence.Show notes and transcript: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/charlotte-mason-narration-essay-writing/FREE Homeschool Planner Calendar: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/free-homeschool-planner-calendar/Homeschool START Course: https://www.made2homeschool.com/a/2148255817/KNcPGL3tGetting Started With Shakespeare Guide: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/exploring-shakespeare-children/FREE 5 Day Gentle Homeschool Reset: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/gentle-homeschool-reset/While you’re here, would you take a minute to leave a rating and review in your podcast app? | 2/2/26 | ![]() Gospel Hope for Overwhelmed Moms with Jamie Erickson | Motherhood overwhelm is something nearly every mom experiences — even in a world filled with modern conveniences. In today's heartfelt and practical conversation I chat with Jamie Erickson, homeschool mom of five, author of The Overwhelmed Mom, and host of the Mom2Mom Podcast, to explore why overwhelm feels so pervasive for twenty-first-century mothers and how we can find peace without trying to fix everything at once.Jamie shares her personal journey into homeschooling, how her background as a classroom teacher shaped her convictions, and why God’s calling for one family isn’t a mandate for all. Together, Amy and Jamie unpack the difference between everyday tiredness and deeper overwhelm, identifying three distinct types of overwhelm that require different responses. You’ll hear Jamie explain how comparison, overcommitment, and taking on responsibilities that belong to others often fuel exhaustion. She offers a freeing perspective on “living in your season,” encouraging moms to see God’s boundaries not as limitations, but as protection — especially when seasons feel long or unending. One of the most powerful moments in the episode comes when Jamie shares a deeply personal story of crisis while writing her book, when her son became critically ill. Through that experience, she witnessed how faithful routines and a strong Christian community became tangible expressions of God’s care during acute overwhelm. This conversation is filled with practical wisdom, including:How small, incremental changes can dramatically reduce stressWhy narrating a better story about your life mattersHow five-to-ten-minute pockets of time can be redeemedWhy community is essential during overwhelming seasonsHow the Gospel meets us in burnout and sufferingIf you are a mom who feels stretched thin, burdened, or stuck in survival mode — whether you homeschool or not — this episode will encourage you to slow down, release unnecessary guilt, and trust God with what you were never meant to carry alone.👉 Subscribe for more conversations on homeschooling, motherhood, faith, and cultivating a life of humility and doxology.👉 Share this episode with a mom who could use encouragement today.Get your own copy of The Overwhelmed Mom by Jamie Erickson: https://amzn.to/49REvdGShow Notes and Full Transcript: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/gospel-hope-for-overwhelmed-moms-with-jamie-erickson/FREE 5 Day Gentle Homeschool Reset: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/gentle-homeschool-reset/While you’re here, would you take a minute to leave a rating and review in your podcast app? | 1/19/26 | ![]() Scholé Every Day: Restful Learning for Homeschool Moms (with Brandy Vencel, Mystie Winckler, and Abby Wahl) | In this episode, I'm joined by Brandy Vencel, Mystie Winckler, and Abby Wahl (the Scholé Sisters) for a thoughtful conversation about homeschooling, reading, and cultivating a life of restful learning. What does scholé actually mean, and why does it matter for homeschool families today? The Scholé Sisters unpack the classical idea of scholé as “restful learning,” explaining how it differs from both busyness and passive relaxation. They explore how this posture shapes not only how children learn, but how mothers grow and think as well. The conversation also dives into why moms need to keep reading for themselves, even when time feels scarce. Rather than viewing reading as optional or indulgent, the Scholé Sisters argue that a mother’s intellectual life directly impacts the culture of her home. Reading forms habits of attention, discernment, and humility that overflow into family life.We also discuss how to engage children with current issues thoughtfully—without fear, finger-wagging, or avoidance. From asking good questions to learning how to listen well to people we disagree with, this episode offers practical wisdom for raising kids who can pursue truth with charity and confidence. You’ll also hear about the heart behind the Scholé Sisters’ new book, Scholé Every Day, their own reading lives, and their best tips for resetting homeschool days that have gone off the rails (spoiler: fresh air, apologies, and breakfast all make an appearance). This episode is encouragement for homeschool moms who want to think deeply, read faithfully, and live out the truth in ordinary days.📚Get your own copy of Scholé Every Day here: https://amzn.to/4pxyU1TShow Notes and Full Transcript: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/schole-every-day/FREE 5 Day Gentle Homeschool Reset: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/gentle-homeschool-reset/While you’re here, would you take a minute to leave a rating and review in your podcast app? | 11/24/25 | ![]() Classical Homeschooling with Humility and Hospitality with Dr. Joylynn Blake | In this episode of Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology, I sit down with Dr. Joylynn Blake, Director of Schole Academy at Classical Academic Press, to talk about homeschooling, classical Christian education, parenting through different seasons, and living with hospitality and humility. Dr. Blake shares her unique journey into homeschooling while living in China as a missionary. With no international schools available and three young children in a 750-square-foot apartment, she began homeschooling out of necessity. That season sparked her passion for education and eventually led to advanced studies in philosophy, theology, and educational leadership. We discuss how her approach to homeschooling and classical education grew over the years. While many associate classical education with elitism and academic snobbery, Dr. Blake challenges this stereotype. She explains that: “What a classical education does is just mindful of that—that human beings are multidimensional and have many areas in which they can and should develop to the glory of God.” Throughout our conversation, a recurring theme emerges: humility, love of neighbor, and hospitality. From her mission work in China to her current role in education, Dr. Blake reminds us that education is never just about academics—it’s about cultivating the soul and orienting our hearts toward truth, goodness, and beauty. We also explore the idea of homeschooling on the “razor’s edge of weird.” Homeschoolers often get labeled as quirky, but Dr. Blake encourages us to embrace being “good weird” while remaining hospitable and approachable. For moms of younger children, she offers this encouragement: “Don’t worry about the things that aren’t worth worrying about, and that is 99% of the things.” And for moms with adult children, she emphasizes the importance of resting in God’s sufficiency: “Now, if anything, we are a coach if asked, an advisor if asked—but otherwise, I am the one who loves.” Schole Academy (https://www.scholeacademy.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission)Classical Academic Press (https://classicalacademicpress.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission)Classical U (https://classicalu.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission). | 11/10/25 | ![]() The Harmony of Learning: Greg Wilbur on Music, the Quadrivium, and Loving God Through Beauty | In today's episode we welcome Greg Wilbur, founder and president of New College Franklin, award-winning composer, and passionate advocate for the recovery of classical education's Quadrivium.Greg Wilbur shares how his lifelong love of music began in his family home where his mother taught piano lessons and his father pastored their church. His journey led him from teaching in classical schools to founding a college where the seven liberal arts—the Trivium and Quadrivium—work together to form souls through wisdom and beauty. We discuss what the Quadrivium truly is and why its recovery matters for Christians today. Wilbur explains that music isn’t just emotional expression; it’s a reflection of divine order. “There’s a moral, ethical, formative content to the Quadrivium,” he says. “It’s utilizing number, but it leads to philosophical and theological discussion.”Throughout the conversation, Wilbur explores how harmony reveals God’s nature:“Harmony is how you hold things together in tension—justice and mercy, peace and order.”From the cosmos to the human heart, music helps us perceive and participate in creation’s design. He connects Augustine’s and Boethius’s ancient insights with modern Christian life, inviting us to see harmony as “living according to the way God created the world to work.”You’ll hear reflections on:Why music education forms the soul, not just the earHow classical learning shapes imagination and worshipThe difference between live and recorded music How beauty teaches us to love God and neighborWilbur encourages parents and teachers not to be intimidated: “You don’t have to know all the terms. | 9/29/25 | ![]() Narration as the Art of Learning: A Conversation with Adrienne Freas | What is narration in homeschooling, and why does it matter so much in a Charlotte Mason or classical education? In this episode of Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology, I talk with Adrienne Freas (homeschool veteran, grandmother, author, and classical education consultant) about the art of narration. Adrienne shares how narration goes beyond simple retelling to become a joyful, life-giving practice that builds memory, strengthens reasoning, and develops eloquent expression. Together we explore the roots of narration in the classical tradition, why it uniquely activates all three arts of the trivium, and how homeschool families can begin narration in simple, practical, and creative ways.Find show notes and full transcript here: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/narration-art-of-learning-adrienne-freas/Thank you to Podcast Season Sponsor Berean Builders.
