Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) is a teleconsultation model that leverages technology to sustain specialized interventions in underresourced settings. We present the application of the ECHO model to longitudinal training and consultation for community behavioral health providers learning to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis, an evidence-based psychotherapy for individuals with psychotic disorders that has poorly penetrated the US mental health system. Our evaluation suggests that the ECHO model supports continuous professional development for practitioners, most of whom had indicated inadequate preparation for their role. We observed improved learner and select patient outcomes.

In continuing professional development (CPD), educators face the need to develop and implement innovative assessment strategies to adhere to accreditation standards and support lifelong learning. However, little is known about the development and validation of these assessment practices. We aimed to document the breadth and depth of what is known about the development and implementation of assessment practices within CPD activities. Building on the adage "assessment drives learning," it is imperative that the CPD practices contribute to the intended learning and limit the unintended negative consequences of assessment. Our results suggest that validation processes must be considered and adapted within CPD contexts.

This novel study of physician certification suggests that the accuracy of physician performance increases with higher stakes, even as self-reported confidence in their knowledge declines. It suggests that physicians may be more engaged in higher-stakes compared with lower-stakes assessments. With medical knowledge growing exponentially, these analyses provide an example of the complementary roles of higher- and lower-stakes knowledge assessment in supporting physician learning during continuing specialty board certification.

Faculty in low-resourced communities often have limited training on teaching and learning. An innovative, online, 13-week course using a flipped classroom model was developed for junior faculty anesthesiologists at teaching hospitals in East Africa and piloted in Ethiopia and Tanzania. This evaluation demonstrated the efficacy of using e-learning in East Africa and highlights the innovation of online faculty development in a region where it has not been done before. By using participants as future instructors, this course is scalable in the region and worldwide, and it can help address limited access to training by providing a critical mass of trainers competent in teaching, mentorship, and leadership.

Learner motivation plays an essential role in overcoming barriers to achieve online learning success. Many health professions educators, however, are not familiar with evidence-based motivational principles and techniques that tap into learners' inner resources to promote online learning success. The TEC-VARIETY framework provides evidence-based principles and techniques that motivate and engage learners. Health professions educators can identify and assemble appropriate activities to motivate and engage online learners. Educators are encouraged to use Design-Based Research to guide their adoption of TEC-VARIETY and evaluation of outcomes.

Burnout is pervasive among physicians and has widespread implications for individuals and institutions. This research study examines, for the first time, the effects of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique on academic physician burnout and depression. Mixed methods findings suggest the TM technique is a viable and effective intervention to decrease burnout and depression for academic physicians.

Knowledge translation experts advocate for employing knowledge brokers (KBs) to promote the uptake of research evidence in healthcare settings, citing a 2.76 times faster uptake of clinical best practices. Yet, no previous research has identified potential barriers for KBs to promote the uptake of research evidence in rehabilitation settings. This research aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators for KBs through literature review, surveys, and semi-structured interviews.
