| 12/6/24 | ![]() Applying the Project ECHO Model to Support Implementation and Sustainment of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis | Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) is a teleconsultation model that leverages technology to sustain specialized interventions in underresourced settings. We present the application of the ECHO model to longitudinal training and consultation for community behavioral health providers learning to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis, an evidence-based psychotherapy for individuals with psychotic disorders that has poorly penetrated the US mental health system. Our evaluation suggests that the ECHO model supports continuous professional development for practitioners, most of whom had indicated inadequate preparation for their role. We observed improved learner and select patient outcomes. | — | ||||||
| 8/13/24 | ![]() The Emerging Role of Reinforcement in the Clinician's Path from Continuing Education to Practice | Continuing education (CE) activities may affect clinicians' knowledge, skills, self-efficacy, and/or performance. Studies have suggested that self-efficacy may moderate or mediate the relationship between knowledge/competence and performance. Some results have shown that increases in knowledge/competence contributed to increases in self-efficacy. However, clinicians do not always learn something "new" when they participate in CE activities; rather, their knowledge or skills may be reinforced. This study examined whether self-efficacy was greater when clinicians reinforced what they already knew compared with when they learned something new. | — | ||||||
| 7/12/24 | ![]() Assessment Practices in Continuing Professional Development Activities in Health Professions - A Scoping Review | In continuing professional development (CPD), educators face the need to develop and implement innovative assessment strategies to adhere to accreditation standards and support lifelong learning. However, little is known about the development and validation of these assessment practices. We aimed to document the breadth and depth of what is known about the development and implementation of assessment practices within CPD activities. Building on the adage "assessment drives learning," it is imperative that the CPD practices contribute to the intended learning and limit the unintended negative consequences of assessment. Our results suggest that validation processes must be considered and adapted within CPD contexts. | — | ||||||
| 5/31/24 | ![]() Paving the Way Forward for Evidence-Based Continuing Professional Development | This article examines the development and key recommendations embedded in a CE Educator's toolkit created to evolve CPD practice and foster a learning experience that promotes self-awareness, self-reflection, competency, and behavioral change. The toolkit highlighted three intervention formats: facilitation of small group learning, case-based learning, and reflective learning. Strategies and guidelines to promote active learning principles in CPD activities within different modalities and learning contexts were included. The goal of the toolkit is to assist CPD providers to design educational activities that optimally support health care providers' self-reflection and knowledge translation into their clinical environment and contribute to practice improvement, thus achieving the outcomes of the quintuple aim. | 5/21/24 | ![]() Differences in Knowledge, Competence, and Confidence In Assessment Performance | This novel study of physician certification suggests that the accuracy of physician performance increases with higher stakes, even as self-reported confidence in their knowledge declines. It suggests that physicians may be more engaged in higher-stakes compared with lower-stakes assessments. With medical knowledge growing exponentially, these analyses provide an example of the complementary roles of higher- and lower-stakes knowledge assessment in supporting physician learning during continuing specialty board certification. | — | ||||||
| 4/19/24 | ![]() Conceptual Advances in Continuing Professional Development in the Health Professions - A JCEHP Supplement | In this supplement, scholars were invited to examine continuing professional development (CPD) in the health professions critically and innovatively as a means of stimulating the field. The objective of the invitation was to promote intellectual space to question existing ideas that may be widely accepted, but in need of letting go. Also, to introduce new ideas that may provide fruitful sparks in how we think about and approach existing, new, and future education problems and their solutions in CPD. We proposed a kind of conceptual renewal, intended to urge CPD scholars to creatively examine the value of prevailing theories and assumptions, and to propose new ones. | — | ||||||
| 4/5/24 | ![]() Evaluation of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice in an Online Faculty Development Course for Anesthesia Educators in East Africa | Faculty in low-resourced communities often have limited training on teaching and learning. An innovative, online, 13-week course using a flipped classroom model was developed for junior faculty anesthesiologists at teaching hospitals in East Africa and piloted in Ethiopia and Tanzania. This evaluation demonstrated the efficacy of using e-learning in East Africa and highlights the innovation of online faculty development in a region where it has not been done before. By using participants as future instructors, this course is scalable in the region and worldwide, and it can help address limited access to training by providing a critical mass of trainers competent in teaching, mentorship, and leadership. | — | ||||||
| 2/28/24 | ![]() A Critical Look at Simulation as a CPD Strategy | Although simulation is broadly believed to be an effective experiential educational strategy, physicians seldom select it for continuing professional development (CPD) for reasons that are poorly understood. The objective of this review was to explore existing evidence on simulation-based CPD and the factors influencing physicians' engagement in simulation-based CPD. | — | ||||||
| 2/6/24 | ![]() Applying TEC-VARIETY to Motivate and Engage Learners for Online Learning Success | Learner motivation plays an essential role in overcoming barriers to achieve online learning success. Many health professions educators, however, are not familiar with evidence-based motivational principles and techniques that tap into learners' inner resources to promote online learning success. The TEC-VARIETY framework provides evidence-based principles and techniques that motivate and engage learners. Health professions educators can identify and assemble appropriate activities to motivate and engage online learners. Educators are encouraged to use Design-Based Research to guide their adoption of TEC-VARIETY and evaluation of outcomes. | — | ||||||
| 10/17/23 | ![]() Advancing Educational Research Through an Innovative Accelerator Panel | Many educators are neither involved in nor equipped to conduct quality education research. This gap underscores the continuing education need to guide and train health professions educators to rigorously investigate, prepare, and report their educational research. The Education Research Accelerator conferred favorable outcomes for participants' competence in designing education research studies and awareness of using available resources. | — | ||||||
| 10/17/23 | ![]() Effects of Transcendental Meditation on Academic Physician Burnout and Depression | Burnout is pervasive among physicians and has widespread implications for individuals and institutions. This research study examines, for the first time, the effects of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique on academic physician burnout and depression. Mixed methods findings suggest the TM technique is a viable and effective intervention to decrease burnout and depression for academic physicians. | — | ||||||
| 10/17/23 | ![]() Efficacy of QI projects: A Realist Inquiry Into What Works, for Whom, Under What Circumstances | QI programs show variable impact on physician performance often neglecting to examine how implementation varies across contexts and mechanisms that affect uptake. This study used realist methods to explore relationships between outcomes, mechanisms (resources and reasoning), and context factors of a national multisource feedback (MSF) program. | — | ||||||
| 7/18/23 | ![]() Evidence for Knowledge Brokers (KBs) to Improve Healthcare Quality | Knowledge translation experts advocate for employing knowledge brokers (KBs) to promote the uptake of research evidence in healthcare settings, citing a 2.76 times faster uptake of clinical best practices. Yet, no previous research has identified potential barriers for KBs to promote the uptake of research evidence in rehabilitation settings. This research aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators for KBs through literature review, surveys, and semi-structured interviews. | — | ||||||
