In 2008 we co-founded a ministry called Keeping Families Connected. Since then, we’ve helped thousands of families around the world. We help them to save their marriages. When divorce is unavoidable, we help them to navigate through a divorce with the least amount of cost, conflict and damage to their families as possible. We also help families blown apart by parental alienation. This clinical term simply means, when one parent turns their children against the other parent. Extreme alienation can result in losing contact with your children forever. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. We know the positive traits to look for in a potential spouse and which ones to avoid like the plague. Most people have no idea how lonely and destructive a loveless or abusive marriage can be. Or how bad things can get if you choose the wrong spouse. We’ve had people contact us on the verge of taking their own life because of the pain of a horrible marriage. And today we’ll share what we’ve learned with you, to protect you from experiencing the painful consequences of a bad decision. Marriage to the right person can be an incredible blessing. Learning These 5 Love Languages Will Change Your Marriage Forever!Most people are unaware that specific love languages exist, let alone what those are, or how to use them to convey love to someone you care about. In fact, you may not even know what your own love language is, or why that matters. Today we’ll discuss one of my favorite books about love and relationships. The concepts apply primarily to marriage relationships but are highly effective with children, and other relationships as well. The book is written by Dr. Gary Chapman called The Five Love Languages. This book was written in the 1990s, but the concepts are more relevant and important today than ever before. Chapman’s main idea is that everyone has a primary way of expressing and receiving love, and if those close to us “speak” a different love language, that’s when pain and misunderstandings can arise. The five love languages are Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. Each of these represent a distinct way that people express and receive love and connect emotionally. Most of us look forward to the Holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are the most widely celebrated, and they’re all relatively close together. That’s why this time of year is generally referred to as the Holiday Season. We get to spend time with family and friends. Express our Thanks to God for all His blessings, especially the birth of His son Jesus Christ. We exchange gifts and if we’re lucky we might even get a couple of days off work! 😊 But there’s a sizable group of people that aren’t looking forward to this time of year. It isn’t that they aren’t grateful for their blessings or that they are Charles Dicken’s Ebenezer Scrooge. They’re simply experiencing conflicting thoughts and emotions that cast a shadow over and diminish the joy of the season. In review, the top 3 reported reasons for divorce are: Lack of CommitmentInfidelity/AffairConflict and arguingFinancial problems, substance abuse and domestic violence are on the list, but none of them come close in reported frequency to the top three. Today we’ll cover the most common landmines that can turn disagreements and different perspectives into destructive communication patterns that can destroy a marriage. We’ll provide powerful tools to help you establish a framework of communication techniques and perspectives that will prevent an escalation to intense conflict and arguing. To be clear, when two people enter a marriage, there will always be a difference in their thought process and perspectives. And although this can be challenging at times, (there’s an understatement) it usually results in a better decision-making process when both perspectives are valued and taken into consideration. The key to success here isn’t never disagreeing about something. It’s to work through those disagreements in a way that doesn’t attack, demean and destroy your spouse.
