About this episode

Judith A. Culp reflects on her journey in the film industry and the realization that success is influenced by factors beyond talent.

I studied film and planned to be a screenwriter. Added director when I realized I would have more control of my work if I also directed it. However, it never occurred to me that it wasn't a meritocracy - that successful film careers weren't built solely on talent and lucky breaks. And the gatekeepers...I didn't realize that this was a design. I know it sounds conspiratorial but I can see the pattern now.
