October is shaping up to be a busy month at your local multiplex. For us at Movies Last Night our most anticipated release’s of the year will finally come out. Denis Villenevue’s take on the sci fi classic Dune finally hits screens, Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho drops and Indie auteur Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch will round out 2021’s hottest month for cinema nerds. All three of these movies were shelved from their original 2020 release dates and thrust forward into a still evolving and unsteady market place over one year later. And depending on where you live, it’s probably a bigger gamble to see them on the big screen now than it ever was. Eric and I are fans first and foremost. So when three of our favorite directors have movies releasing in the space of seven days it feels like Christmas is coming early for Movies Last Night. So that got us thinking… it’s looking pretty slow for the next few weeks, and whilst we sit at home waiting for this summer to finally end now seems like as good a time as ever to launch a mini series looking back at a directors career up to now and how they’ve shaped our love of their art. Stylistically Wright, Villenueve and Anderson could not be further apart, but they all share a very strong back catalog of work that many could argue is spotless. So please join us in conversation as we recount the first time we crossed paths with these filmmakers, our favorite entries in their illustrious catalogs, hot takes, clashing opinions and hopefully we can convince some of you to check out a blindspot in your back catalogs along the way. ***SPOILERS*** The Night House premiered at Sundance all the way back in January of 2020. Flash forward to late August of 2021 and it’s just hit your local multiplex. Directed by David Buckner from an original screen play by Ben collins and Luke Piotrowski, the psychological horror tells the story of Beth (played by the wonderful Rebecca Hall) as she unearths both literally and figuratively the secrets kept by her late husband Owen in the wake of his Suicide. It would be difficult to say what is more terrifying, confronting your fear of death, loss and abandonment or learning that the person you’ve loved for so long might not have existed at all. On todays episode we will not only hash out our thoughts and feelings on The Night House, but we will also try to connect it to existing milestones in the genre.
