Welcome to this podcast, “Norsk for beginners”. In this episode, I just want to talk a bit about what my aspirations are for this podcast, and give you a picture of what this podcast is for. But first, let me introduce myself. I am Marius Stangeland, currently studying to become a history and English teacher, and 23 years old when this episode is published. I am also the creator of the podcast “Lær norsk nå!” for intermediate learners of Norwegian. I have chosen to make this podcast, “Norsk for beginners”, for all of you that struggle to understand spoken Norwegian. All of the transcripts will be posted at the website for the podcast. My plan for the podcast is to speak very slowly and clearly in Norwegian, and use a simplified vocabulary. You will not reach a high level of fluency with this podcast, but I do think it can help you to reach an intermediate level of Norwegian. I will structure the podcast around different themes linked to Norwegian culture, history and language. So, I will make various episodes around a unifying theme, and structure the episodes in seasons. The first season explores different aspects of the Norwegian language. I think this will provide some continuity and you will increasingly learn more about the theme. A key principle of language learning is repetition, and by exploring a theme in various episodes, I will use similar vocabulary over many episodes, making it more likely that you will retain more of the unfamiliar words. An episode is structured in two: The first part is wholly in Norwegian, where I speak about something in a slow and deliberate manner. This will give you ample opportunity to actually hear spoken Norwegian. This is important to do from the start, that is, familiarizing yourself with the language and how it sounds. The second part of an episode will summarize the content of the episode in English and the look more at some key words and phrases that I used in the Norwegian part. I would recommend listening to the episode, especially the Norwegian part, two or more times. Repetition is key to learning a language. Lastly, some justification for making this podcast. There are already quite a few podcasts for beginners in Norwegian. But frankly, I think they generally speak way too much English. You are not learning English, you are learning Norwegian. Beginners need to get familiar with the sounds of the language and start to attune their ears to the new language. This is not possible by simply listening to a lot of English intermixed with a few phrases and words of Norwegian. I want to make a podcast that actually uses Norwegian. Of course, this might make it a bit difficult in the start, but it should be difficult. You learn by challenging yourself. My second point is that podcasts for beginners tend to be a bit boring, to be honest. The language might be so simple that not much is really being said. I want to create episodes around a theme in order to contextualize the language and hopefully make the content more engaging. The language that I use will, of course, be adopted to your level. That means that you will get a lot of input at your level and maybe slightly above your level, which is exactly what you want. So, to sum up. “Norsk for beginners” is made for those of you who really want to learn the language. It might be challenging, it might be frustrating, but first and foremost, it will teach you a lot of Norwegian. I look forward to see you in future episodes!
