We talk to Professor Philippa Saunders to find out why endometriosis can take so many years to diagnose, why progress in treatment development has been so slow, and what level of period pain should be investigated by a healthcare professional. Philippa is part of the EXPPECT research centre in Edinburgh, a multi-disciplinary team focused on endometriosis and other types of pelvic pain. | 10/18/22 | ![]() Mould-breaking Musical Theatre with Dr Meghan Perry and Robin Hiley | What do you get when you mix musical theatre with antimicrobial resistance -and throw in Alexander Fleming for good measure? To kick off season five of Not Another Science Podcast, we talk to Dr Meghan Perry, an infectious diseases doctor and researcher who embarked on a somewhat unusual scientific adventure to spread the word about the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through song and dance. Alongside musician and composer Robin Hiley, they created ‘The Mould That Changed the World’, a musical telling the story of Alexander Fleming, his discovery of penicillin, and its relevance to the world today. The show is currently bursting onto the US stage, with performances in Atlanta and Washington DC in October and November 2022, fresh from its successful third run at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer. This conversation taught us a lot about Fleming’s life, antibiotics, and the emotional power that musical theatre can conjure up. Listen out for some ceilidh music in an exclusive snippet from the show! | 6/22/22 | ![]() Mapping the Mysteries of the Galaxies, with Professor Romeel Davé | This week, NASP host Alix meets with universe-ready Professor Romeel Davé - computational and theoretical astrophysicist and Chair of Physics from the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy - for a special extended episode. He takes us "Around the Galaxies in 80+ Computer Models" by introducing us to galaxy-creating computer simulations that aim to help the world better understand what has been, what is, and what will be out beyond Earth's reach. Alix and Romeel venture out from the world of academia, and into the (theoretical) world of the yet-to-be-mapped universe by discussing the scientific field that involves constant comparison of models of the planets and the stars and everything in between. More than an academic, we get a sneak peek into Romeel's down-to-Earth nature, philosophies, goals and hobbies. Need we say more? | 4/6/22 | ![]() Life on Mars?! | This is the moment you've been waiting for since your childhood and probably into your adulthood. Not Another Science Podcast hosts, Hannah and Lili, reveal the answer to the question: "Is there, and has there ever been, life on Mars?" by talking to Ophelia Gunn, PhD student and researcher at the University of Edinburgh's UK Centre for Astrobiology and the School of Physics and Astronomy. Ophelia studies whether or not the salt structures in Martian brines (not the olive kind) would have ever held Martian life (Mars aliens!) in the past. She joins us to bust long-held myths about space and gives us the best answer to "Do you think aliens are real?". Ophelia works in an interdisciplinary department dedicated to extraterrestrial life; join us to discover how much out-of-this-world research is being done on this tiny blue planet we call home. Dr. Jo Sadler is a newly appointed Principal Investigator at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Biological Sciences and an innovative builder of new molecules. Synthetic biology - the ability to manipulate biological systems using chemistry and biological processes - is Joanna’s way of breathing new life into so-called ‘waste’ materials. Jo’s newly released research paper uses polyethylene therapthlatate, or PET, found in plastic bottles to synthesize vanilla flavouring that is identical to the vanillin extracted from the natural plant.
