| 7/31/24 | ![]() Understanding Jesus’ Call to Be Salt and Light | If you’ve ever been described as having a “salty” personality, they probably didn’t mean it how Jesus means it. Today we’re looking at the biblical theme of “salt” (surprising OT uses!) and what Jesus means when he tells his disciples they are to be salt and light to the world. This sermon is a part of our series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5. | — | ||||||
| 4/4/21 | ![]() The Resurrection | Without the resurrection, Christianity simply would not exist. All of Jesus’ life, the miracles he performed, and the claims he made about himself would be pure nonsense without the resurrection. History would have long ago forgotten about the zealot who claimed to be the Son of God, but lacked the capacity to save himself from death. It’s only when we understand Jesus’ life and ministry in light of the resurrection that it all makes sense. Today, we’re going to look at why the resurrection is so much more than a cold historical fact. The resurrection is a life-changing event that we have the opportunity to experience personally today. | — | ||||||
| 7/31/18 | ![]() Sermon: Abundant Faith | Picking up in Genesis 13 with Abraham being sent away from Egypt and into the wilderness. God calls us out of this scarcity living (there won’t be enough for me) and into abundant life (God provides you with everything you need) “Faith makes choices looking at God’s abundance rather than our own scarcity.” “God created us in His image so that through our very lives we would glorify him by reflecting him accurately to others. This broken image is the reason he sent his son into the world. Jesus redefined this image for us. When God became man and dwelt among us, he perfectly reflected the Father as a human being. In his time on earth, he called us out of the scarcity, and through faith, into the abundant love of the Father.” “We have to remember here that Abram really has no idea what Lot is going to choose. He’s giving Lot first dibs on water and grazing rights. They’re not just competing for the best view, this is their mutual livelihood on the line. Which is why, when God earlier promises to give Abram a LAND, he’s basically telling him, I’m going to take care of this stuff for you. You can trust me to provide you with everything you need. It’s this promise that Abram now leans blindly into. When LAND seems scarce, and his needs are at their greatest, Abram leans all the harder into the abundance of God’s promise.” “This is the gift of an abundant life, lived out when we act on what Christ says is true about us. Step by step, we can explore this promise.” Genesis 13 (NIV) Abram and Lot Separate 13 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord. 5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” 10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord. 14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” 18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord. Footnotes: Genesis 13:15 Or seed; also in verse 16 | — | ||||||
| 7/25/18 | ![]() Sermon: Fear and Faith: Leaning Into the Promise | “When we fail to lay hold of God’s promises for us, we limit ourselves to what we can handle, rather than what He can handle” Pastor Kyle sharing a message on Genesis 12:10-20, where Abraham enters Egypt and is so scared they will kill him and take his wife Sarah when they see how beautiful she is. So he lies about who his wife is so that he won’t be killed. What we learn about the role of fear and faith in leaning into the promise God has given to Abraham. “God doesn’t want YOU to be your own Savior” “Fear provides us a window to who we rely on to save us” Genesis 12:10-20 (NIV) Abram in Egypt 10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister,so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.” 14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. 17 But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had. | — | ||||||
| 7/17/18 | ![]() Sermon: Blessed | What does it mean to be #blessed? Abraham receives God’s blessings not because of who he is and what he is done, but because of who God is. God calls Abraham out of his life, to follow God and receive this blessing. He calls Abraham into the unknown, away from his home, he asks him to rely on God. When God calls us OUT of something, he is calling us INTO something better. Genesis 11:10-26 Genesis 12:1-9 The Hound of Heaven (poem by Francis Thompson) | — | ||||||
| 7/11/18 | ![]() Sermon: Tower of Babel | Pastor Kyle Nichols speaking on Genesis 11, which is the story of the Tower of Babel. How we seek and handle power – we want to use it for authority and control. Genesis 11 New International Version (NIV) The Tower of Babel 11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there. 3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. | — | ||||||
| 6/27/18 | ![]() Sermon: Confused by God | What happens when God’s promises don’t play out how we expect them to? Intern Jude is preaching on Genesis 10:1-32, the lineage of Noah’s sons. This is in follow up to Genesis 9 (see last week’s sermon), where Ham disgraces his father and God promises Shem that he will have dominion over his brother Ham. | — | ||||||
| 6/22/18 | ![]() Sermon: Finish Strong | Isn’t it great news that God uses imperfect people? Our Intern Jude Klassen shares a message on Genesis 9:18-29, on the final days of Noah’s life. He shared a message of hope that we won’t all get this perfect – and God still uses us and values us. As well as a reminder not to lose our long-term sight of the race God calls us to run. | — | ||||||
| 6/13/18 | ![]() Sermon: God’s Everlasting Covenant | In last Sunday’s sermon, we ended with Noah waiting and waiting for the flood waters to recede. Now the water has gone down and Noah and his family can leave the ark. God blesses Noah and his whole family and all of creation, knowing that they’re sinful and broken. God is lovingly attaching himself to a broken and fallen humanity. He earnestly desires to bless us. | — | ||||||
| 6/5/18 | ![]() Sermon: Remembered by God | Remembered by God Pastor Kyle is preaching on Genesis 8:1-22 He explains how God remembers Noah and those on the ark, how God is re-creating the world in light of the fall. This message reminds us that God remembers us in those periods of waiting. It also asks how we are waiting on God. | — | ||||||
| 5/22/18 | ![]() Sermon: Vision and Goals | Pastor Kyle speaks on the vision and goals of our church and how it impacts every single one of us to embrace our call to reach, love and disciple. If we want to see REAL church, we must see beyond the building and the programs to the people who are the church. Church is who we are, it is not the place we meet. Being church is an everyday occurrence for us | — | ||||||
| 5/15/18 | ![]() Sermon: Finding Favour | Pastor Kyle is preaching on Genesis 6:1-8. He shares about how we view the graciousness of God and how we cannot earn his favour through our ‘good works’ but through our faith and obedience to him. | — | ||||||
| 5/6/18 | ![]() Sermon: Walking Faithfully with God | This past week Pastor Kyle shared a message on Genesis 4:16-5:32. Which compared the genealogies of Cain and Seth and what it means to walk faithfully with God, trusting him with the big life choices, but just as importantly – taking the small steps of faith that he calls you to. This sermon will inspire you to listen to God’s promptings in your life and follow through on them, even if they feel random or strange. | — | ||||||
| 4/24/18 | ![]() Sermon: One Small Step for Cain | As we read in Genesis 4 Cain murdered his brother Abel. We might breeze past this story in the bible and feel like we can’t learn much from it, but what does it teach us about ourselves. Our little desires can lead to sin which leads to death. There is good news though, God has a solution to this. (scroll to the bottom to listen or link to the podcast) Genesis 4 New International Version (NIV) Cain and Abel 4 Adam[a] made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b] She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden. | 4/20/18 | ![]() Sermon: The Cost of Sin | Pastor Kyle Nichols is preaching about the cost of our sins, the consequences of the choices we make. Genesis 3:13-24 New International Version (NIV) 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[a] and hers; he will crush[b] your head, and you will strike his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” 20 Adam[c] named his wife Eve,[d] because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
