| 6/24/26 | ![]() Toy Story 5 Accidentally Exposes Society’s Biggest Problem | Toy Story 5 Accidentally Exposes Society’s Biggest Problem THE GREAT DISCONNECT: ARE PHONES DESTROYING HUMAN CONNECTION? Toy Story 5 may be breaking box office records, but beneath the animation is a message that hits much closer to home. The film explores a battle between analog toys and digital devices, raising a question that affects all of us: Have we traded real human connection for screens? Today, we dive into what may be the biggest challenge facing modern society. Despite being more connected digitally than at any point in history, people are feeling more isolated, disconnected, and lonely than ever before. From endless scrolling and short-form content to online relationships that only feel real, we’re losing something essential. We’re becoming disconnected from nature, from beauty, from community, and from one another. Even the colors and experiences of the real world seem to be fading behind glowing screens. Can we get our humanity back? Can we reconnect with each other in a meaningful way? The answer may be yes—but many of us won’t like what it requires. Also today: • A fence goes up around Trump’s troubled reflecting pool project • The Senate finally pushes back against an unjust and illegal war with Iran • Why accountability still matters in American democracy Join Karel for a thought-provoking conversation about technology, loneliness, politics, and what it means to be human in a digital age. | 6/24/26 | ![]() Code Wack - Why Nursing Home Residents Need the Essential Caregivers Act | This time on Code WACK! Imagine being cut off from Mom - a nursing home resident - for months. You can't bring her favorite foods, or help dress her, hug her, or even hold her hand. For thousands of families during the COVID-19 pandemic, this became a heartbreaking reality. And without new laws, advocates say, it could very well happen again. That's why they are fighting to ensure our loved ones are never again separated from those they depend on most in nursing homes and other long-term care settings Today we're speaking with Tony Chicotel, senior staff attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, or CANHR. For decades, Tony has fought to protect the rights of nursing home residents. And he says the isolation and neglect that families experienced during COVID was one of the most painful chapters of his career. This is part two of a two-part series on the Essential Caregiver’s Act. Check out the Transcript and Show Notes for more! | 6/23/26 | ![]() Doommaxxing: How Fear Became a Billion-Dollar Business | Doommaxxing: How Fear Became a Billion-Dollar Business AI is taking your job. The economy is collapsing. A new virus is around the corner. Democracy is ending. Or is it? In this episode of The Karel Cast, we examine the rise of “Doommaxxing”—the business model of keeping people scared, anxious, and constantly engaged. From social media algorithms to cable news, from political campaigns to tech billionaires, fear has become one of the most profitable commodities on Earth. Throughout history, powerful institutions have used fear to control attention. Today, smartphones and social media have made that process faster, more personal, and more profitable than ever before. Who benefits when we’re constantly told disaster is just around the corner? Is AI really coming for everyone’s job? Are we being manipulated into living in a permanent state of crisis? And what does all of this mean for our mental health, our politics, and our future? Plus: • Trump’s latest claim about algae in the Reflecting Pool and why experts disagree. • The FCC’s unprecedented challenge to Disney/ABC station licenses, including KGO-TV San Francisco. • Why media freedom advocates are sounding the alarm. Fear keeps us scrolling. Fear keeps us clicking. Fear keeps us watching. But who profits? The Karel Cast is supported by viewers like you. Please like, subscribe, and share. | 6/22/26 | ![]() The Lies That Lay Ahead | Another Week, Another Trump Lie? Here’s What’s Actually Happening Trump says one thing. Reality says another. As a new week begins, some things have become remarkably predictable: more claims, more contradictions, more attacks, and more headlines surrounding Donald Trump. On today’s Karel Cast, we look at three stories raising serious questions: • The controversy surrounding the blue-painted Reflecting Pool and claims about vandalism. • The continuing conflict involving Iran and questions about whether peace efforts have actually produced results. • The ongoing debate over Air Force One, including the luxury aircraft provided by Qatar and the millions spent modifying it. Whether you support Donald Trump or oppose him, one question remains: when statements from public officials conflict with documented facts, who should Americans believe? We’ll separate rhetoric from reality and examine what the media, government records, and public statements actually show. This week, Karel and Scott Jacobsen of The Good Men Project join forces live from Kyiv, Ukraine, to break down the biggest LGBTQ news stories making headlines worldwide. ⚾ Pride Night controversy is exploding in professional baseball. After high-profile clashes involving Pride celebrations, some players are drawing attention by displaying Bible verses while teams struggle to balance inclusion, religion, and fan expectations. One team made headlines by choosing LGBTQ inclusion over competition, even forfeiting a game rather than abandoning Pride Night. 🌍 Turkey is moving sharply backward on LGBTQ rights, advancing harsh new laws that critics say could criminalize even discussing or acknowledging LGBTQ identities. 🇯🇵 Meanwhile, Japan is taking a very different path. The government has launched a nationwide effort to increase understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ people, raising questions about how societies learn to embrace diversity. Plus: global LGBTQ headlines, culture, politics, and the stories impacting our community right now. | 6/17/26 | ![]() Code Wack - No Way to Live’: The Cost of Nursing Home Isolation | This time on Code WACK! What role do family members and friends play in the lives of nursing home residents? When COVID hit, how were residents impacted when their loved ones were no longer allowed to visit them? Today, we share the story of Melody Taylor Stark, who became an advocate for the Essential Caregivers Act after her husband, a retired dentist and nursing home resident, dramatically declined, then died, after being denied her daily visits during the dark days of COVID. Melody is a founding member of Essential Caregivers Coalition, a member of Caregivers for Compromise, and San Gabriel Valley Disability Collaborative, and Facebook co-administrator for Aging Enlightened, a group that was begun by a prominent reporter for Kaiser Health News. | 6/17/26 | ![]() Police Kill 10,000 Dogs Every Year… Why Does Nobody Care? | Police Kill 10,000 Dogs Every Year… Why Does Nobody Care? POLICE KILL 10,000 DOGS EVERY YEAR… WHY DOES NOBODY CARE? A family was celebrating a big Knicks victory when police arrived over a noise complaint. Minutes later, their beloved dog was dead. The owner sat on the ground sobbing while officers stood nearby. No arrests. No charges. No consequences. And here’s the shocking part: this isn’t rare. Experts estimate that police kill more than 10,000 dogs every year in America — roughly 25 to 30 every single day. That’s nearly ten times the number of people killed annually by police. Many of these animals are family pets on their own property. Animal welfare groups, including the ASPCA, have called for mandatory reporting, better training, and accountability when officers use deadly force against animals. So why is this still happening? Because dogs have no legal rights of their own. They can’t sue. They can’t testify. And in the eyes of the law, they’re often treated as property rather than family members. Today, Karel asks a difficult question: Why are police allowed to kill thousands of beloved pets every year with little oversight or accountability? PLUS: • Are bars and clubs using facial recognition technology to collect your personal information without your knowledge? • Why are businesses scanning your face and storing your data for weeks? • What Toy Story 5 reveals about childhood, imagination, friendship, and our growing dependence on screens. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. Brad is first joined by Alex Lawson, Executive Director of 'Social Security Works.' The pair discusses GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson's comments that Republicans will cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in 2027. Alex also shares how Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Democratic members of the House, plan to schedule a vote to expand Social Security, if they win back the House in the November midterms. Finally, he also recaps his exciting visit to Netroots Nation 2026 that just took place in Philadelphia, and he previews '7 Days in DC: A Week of Democracy in Action.' (Find out more here: 7daysindc.com/#about) Then, Brad is joined by Sarah Jones, Editor-in-Chief for PoliticusUSA. The two discuss what details are known thus far of Trump's Iran peace deal, including reporting that the deal has no agreements about Iran's nuclear program, which is why the President told the country he started this war. Next, they explain why Trump's UFC cage fight on the White House Lawn for his 80th birthday wasn't just a fantastic waste of taxpayer money, it was yet another stain he's left on the image of the White House, and the country. Lastly, Sarah shares how Trump's name being removed from the Kennedy Center, following his loss in court on the matter, symbolizes the end of his power in a very important and motivating way. Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film Disclosure Day raises a question that has fascinated scientists, theologians, and governments for generations: If extraterrestrial life is proven beyond any doubt, what happens next?
