| 6/21/26 | ![]() Is the Iran Deal Already Falling Apart Three Days After Trump Signed It? | The Iran ceasefire was supposed to be the win of the year. Three days after the signatures, the Strait of Hormuz is closed again, Lebanon is still burning, and the only people who seem sure it is holding are the ones who signed it. This week's Purple Political Breakdown pulls one thread through everything: the decisions that shape your life keep getting made in rooms you are not allowed to see. We get into the Iran memorandum and why a deal neither Israel nor Hezbollah signed is now supposed to end their war. The Justice Department turning toward Gavin Newsom, and what it does to all of us when prosecution becomes a tool either party reaches for. The leak of Peter Thiel's invitation-only Dialog society, the senators, cabinet officials, and generals who registered for it, and the one real conflict worth your attention. Then the inward turn: is AI actually coming for your job, the collapse of "learn to code," and the rise of the optimized, lonely, enhanced self. Plus four Senate races you should actually understand (Massachusetts, Georgia, Alabama, Maine) and three pieces of good news, ending with a man living with ALS who got his voice back. Political solutions without political bias. Listen, push back in the chat, and let us drag some of it into the light. | 6/20/26 | ![]() Ohio's 6th, 7th, and 8th District Breakdown, the FBI Raid on a Progressive Group, and Ohio Republicans Attack on Voting | Purple Political Breakdown: Ohio Edition takes you through three Ohio congressional races and the statewide news shaping the 2026 midterms. Host Radell Lewis breaks down the 6th, 7th, and 8th districts: Michael Rulli versus Elizabeth Kirtley in the east, the more competitive Max Miller versus Brian Poindexter race in the northeast, and Warren Davidson versus Vanessa Enoch in the southwest, the district Radell calls home. Before the districts, Radell follows the money. New campaign finance reports show Democrat Amy Acton outraising Vivek Ramaswamy in the governor's race, even as Ramaswamy sits on a far larger war chest built on a twenty five million dollar personal loan. Down the ballot, Democrats outraised Republicans in two of four statewide races while Republicans keep a cash advantage across the board. Radell makes the case for why this should worry anyone who believes elections should not be bought. Then the maneuvering. Radell covers the FBI operation targeting the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, the surprising death penalty split between Governor DeWine and his own new attorney general, and the two voter ID measures Republicans just pushed through. One is a constitutional amendment on your November ballot. The other, the one Radell warns you to watch, is a mail-in ballot photo ID requirement he argues is less about security and more about making it harder to vote. Plus quick hits on a submetering rollback hitting apartment renters and a dangerous new synthetic opioid spreading across Northeast Ohio. Political solutions without political bias. If you are in Ohio, we are striving for a better state on the way to a better America. PODCAST NETWORK ALIVE Podcast Network. | 6/16/26 | ![]() Can an Independent Actually Win a Senate Seat in Idaho? Ft. Todd Achilles | What does it take to run for the U.S. Senate in one of the reddest states in the country with no party machine behind you? On this episode I sit down with Todd Achilles, an independent candidate for U.S. Senate in Idaho who is challenging three-term incumbent Jim Risch. Todd went from Army tank commander to two decades in tech, with leadership roles at companies like Hewlett Packard and T-Mobile, then served in the Idaho House before leaving the parties entirely. He founded Veterans for Idaho Voters and now teaches public policy. Todd makes the case that the core problem in Congress is structural, not partisan. He argues that the same debt, division, and dysfunction show up no matter which party holds power, and that the real divide in the country is top versus bottom rather than left versus right. We get into the issues he says are squeezing working Idahoans: rents inflated by what he calls algorithmic price fixing, non-compete agreements on low wage workers, share buybacks, and corporate consolidation. He also lays out his reform agenda, including his defense of the filibuster paired with a push to reform it, his view on AI guardrails, public school funding in rural communities, and why he believes a small group of independents could change how the Senate works. This is a long form, solutions first conversation with no gotcha moments. Todd's positions are his own. My job is to ask the substantive questions and let you decide. | 6/14/26 | ![]() Did Trump Say He Loves Inflation While the Iran War Drives Up Your Gas? Plus an Unqualified Intelligence Pick and a Detainee Labor Fight | This week on Purple Political Breakdown: the guardrails keep getting overridden, and the polls say Americans can feel it. Radell breaks down a president who says an Iran peace deal gets signed any day now while telling you he loves the inflation that same war is causing. A new intelligence chief, Jay Clayton, nominated to clean up the Bill Pulte mess after FISA Section 702 surveillance authority quietly lapsed. Detainees on a hunger and labor strike at Delaney Hall in Newark, and the uncomfortable question of near-free labor for private profit. Then a Breakdown on the gap between what Americans believe is coming, AI risk and democratic decay, and what they will actually act on, including the world's first commercial brain implant and Trump's push to erase his impeachment from the record. Plus a Research on a Dime on the California "rigged election" claims, jungle primaries, and the governor race vote-split. | 6/13/26 | ![]() Brown or Husted, Acton or Ramaswamy: Where Does Ohio Stand Now? | This week on Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis follows the money and the power across Ohio politics and keeps circling one question: who is Ohio's government actually working for? Radell opens with the biggest and newest story, the FBI search of the Cleveland offices of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a progressive group that registers voters, and why the timing and the target deserve a hard, skeptical look. He revisits the FirstEnergy corruption scandal as the real, provable Ohio fraud story, then breaks down a busy week at the Statehouse: the two voter ID measures (Senate Joint Resolution 10, the constitutional amendment headed for the November ballot, and House Bill 472, the absentee photo ID copy requirement now sitting on the governor's desk), the data center tax break that lawmakers promised to end and then quietly kept, the Medicaid anti-fraud bill, and the 3.7 billion dollar capital budget. Then it is the races. The Senate fight between Sherrod Brown and Jon Husted, including the dueling Epstein attack ads and what is actually true about the Wexner donations, Husted's vote on Trump's anti-weaponization fund, and the latest polling that pushed Cook Political Report to move the seat to toss-up. The governor's race between Amy Acton and Vivek Ramaswamy, where Radell digs into Ramaswamy's tax plan, the independent cost estimates, and his own financial disclosure. And a full District Watch on Ohio's 4th and 5th, where Radell lays out exactly what Jim Jordan and Bob Latta stand for and what their challengers, Joshua Kolasinski and Brian Shaver, are offering instead. County of the Week is Butler County. Radell shares who he is voting for and why, makes the case for showing up even in deep red districts, and keeps it where he always does: political solutions without political bias, building a better Ohio on the way to a better America. | 6/9/26 | ![]() McMorrow vs Stevens vs El-Sayed: Who's Ready to Beat Mike Rogers? | Michigan Senate Debate Analysis | The Michigan U.S. Senate Democratic primary just had its first real debate, and I broke down every answer in real time. On the stage at Mackinac: Mallory McMorrow, Haley Stevens, and Abdul El-Sayed, three Democrats fighting for the chance to take on Republican Mike Rogers in 2026. This is a new kind of episode for Purple Political Breakdown: live debate reaction, scored answer by answer, no team jersey, just who actually made the case. Here's what I dug into: Cost of living, debt, and the billionaire tax. Who brought a real plan and who brought a slogan. McMorrow's No Reverse Robin Hood Act and her hit on Michigan's SOAR fund versus El-Sayed's flat "tax the wealth" pitch. The AI fight nobody else is talking about. El-Sayed floated regulating AI as a public utility, like broadband, and it stopped me cold. McMorrow rolled out an AI jobs and safety plan. I get into whether any of this is actually deliverable for a single senator, and why the "AI as a utility" idea deserves a longer look. The both-sides problem. El-Sayed framed the right and the left as "two establishments playing the same game," and I push back hard. The door stays open for anyone with regrets, but pretending the parties are equally bad right now does not hold up. The filibuster mess. Stevens tied herself in a knot on whether to abolish the filibuster or use it, the moderator caught it, and I owned up to siding with her before I checked the math. Reconciliation matters, and I walk through why. AIPAC, antisemitism, and a moderator who came loaded. The Israel and Gaza questions got tense fast. I call the pile-on what it was while still taking the substance seriously. Healthcare and EVs. Public option versus Medicare for All, and whether killing the EV tax credit just handed the auto industry to China. This is the start of a debate and hearing reaction series. If you want political analysis that scores the argument instead of the party, this one's for you. Drop your take in the comments: who won, and who's actually ready to flip Michigan? | 6/8/26 | ![]() Did Trump Just Admit the Whole No New Wars Promise Was a Lie? | This week on Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis starts with the Meet the Press clip where President Trump claims he never guaranteed no new wars, and uses it to set the night's thread: every guardrail we built only works if somebody enforces it.Nuanced News runs that thread through four stories. The Iran and Israel escalation, and a ceasefire that is not really a ceasefire while missiles fly and warships and drones share the same strait. Bill Pulte handed acting Director of National Intelligence over eighteen agencies despite no intelligence background, through a Federal Vacancies Reform Act loophole that turns Senate confirmation into a workaround. A federal judge in Rhode Island striking down the asylum freeze in a 135-page opinion while the Senate moves roughly 70 billion dollars in enforcement. And the White House media offenders page, plus a list naming individual journalists and creators, as a First Amendment story that should worry you no matter your party.Research on a Dime is an elections roundup: the California governor primary (Becerra advances while Hilton and Steyer fight for second, with a wealth tax proxy war on the November ballot), the Los Angeles mayor runoff (Bass advances, then Nithya Raman advances against Spencer Pratt), the Graham Platner controversies in Maine, Iowa (Zach Lahn beats Trump-backed Randy Feenstra, so vote Rob Sand), and the Alabama congressional map. Breakdown in the Public takes on the affordability squeeze and the single-villain stories both parties keep selling. We close with good news: a pancreatic cancer breakthrough called daraxonrasib, sodium batteries as a low-cost rival to lithium, and a nonprofit wiping out medical debt for about 97,000 Connecticut residents.Listen now and find the show on the Alive Podcast Network and at purplepoliticalbreakdown.com.[Paste the Apple Podcasts episode link here before publishing.]Standard Resource Links and Recommendations (verbatim block)Standard Resource Links & RecommendationsThe following organizations and platforms represent valuable resources for balanced political discourse and democratic participation: PODCAST NETWORKCheck Out the Podcast Website: https://www.purplepoliticalbreakdown.comALIVE Podcast Network: Check out the ALIVE Network where you can catch a lot of great podcasts like my own, led by amazing Black voices.Link: https://alivepodcastnetwork.com/ CONVERSATION PLATFORMSHeadOn: A platform for contentious yet productive conversations. | 6/6/26 | ![]() A Swastika in One Office, a Jan 6 Arrest in the Other: What Is Going On in Ohio's 2nd and 3rd District Races? | Two Ohio congressional seats. Two settled outcomes. And two Republican candidates carrying controversies that are hard to ignore. On this episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, host Radell Lewis breaks down the 2026 races in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District, Republican incumbent David Taylor against Democrat Jen Mazzuckelli, and Ohio's 3rd Congressional District, longtime Democrat Joyce Beatty against Republican Cleophus Dulaney. Radell digs into the documented swastika flag controversy tied to Taylor's office, the January 6 arrest of Dulaney whose prosecution ended after President Trump's order to drop those cases, and what each candidate actually stands for, from farming, energy, and the border to affordability, healthcare, the minimum wage, and union rights. He also makes the case for why Jen Mazzuckelli needs a real platform and real support, and why a safe seat still deserves an honest look. Plus a full Statehouse Watch: the photo voter ID constitutional amendment and the fight over what it leaves out for mail-in and absentee ballots, the Cologix data center tax break and Ohio's growing AI and energy debate, the Ohio Supreme Court gun rights ruling involving a domestic violence conviction, a Justice Department fraud crackdown in Ohio, and a free speech flap over a charged blogger. County of the Week is Athens County, newly drawn into the 2nd District. And Research on a Dime takes on Ohio's federal waiver that could close or privatize low-performing public schools. | 5/31/26 | ![]() Paxton Wins by 27, Iran Strikes Mid-Ceasefire, DNC Disowns Its Own Autopsy | Texas Republicans just traded a sitting U.S. senator for a man under multiple indictments by a 27-point margin. Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General with a securities fraud record, a bribery investigation, an impeachment by the Texas House, and a whistleblower settlement Texas taxpayers paid for, crushed two-decade incumbent John Cornyn in the May 26 Republican primary runoff. Cornyn's allies spent over $100 million documenting Paxton's scandals. The voters did not move. That fact is the real story.Host Radell Lewis breaks down what just happened in Texas, what it tells us about the institutional trust collapse underneath the result, and what the November general election against state Representative James Talarico looks like from here. Marine veteran lens applied throughout. Also in this episode:The Democratic National Committee released a 192-page autopsy of the 2024 election on May 21, and then DNC Chair Ken Martin distanced himself from his own report. The document somehow skips Gaza, Biden's age and cognitive decline, inflation, and immigration. Radell walks through why this was a self-inflicted wound and whether Martin should still be chair. The Trump administration says ceasefire with Iran while U.S. forces hit Iranian military targets the same week. Treasury sanctions a newly created Iranian agency charging tolls on Strait of Hormuz traffic. The Hill reports a ceasefire framework is still on the table. The fuel price ripple is what pushed Spirit Airlines into shutdown earlier this month. One story, three downstream symptoms.Three weeks after the Supreme Court gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Callais and broke its own 32-day waiting period to enforce the ruling mid-election, the cascade is in real time. Alabama is relocking in maps already struck down in Allen v. Milligan. South Carolina filed a new map. Louisiana finalized a plan eliminating its second majority-Black congressional district. Five states, one cycle, one direction. The Office of Personnel Management posted a draft government-wide NDA for all federal workers on May 26, covering a broad enough scope that almost anything someone in power decides should not be public would be covered. Comment period runs through June 26.And on the cultural undercurrent: new research from the American Institute for Boys and Men documents the biggest increase in hands-on fathering in half a century, and the data does not match the easy explanations.Topics covered: Ken Paxton Senate primary, John Cornyn defeat, James Talarico campaign, DNC 2024 autopsy report, Ken Martin, Iran ceasefire strikes, Strait of Hormuz, Louisiana redistricting, Alabama redistricting, Section 2 Voting Rights Act, Callais ruling, federal worker NDA, OPM proposal, millennial fathers childcare research.Standard Resource Links & RecommendationsThe following organizations and platforms represent valuable resources for balanced political discourse and democratic participation: PODCAST NETWORKCheck Out the Podcast Website: https://www.purplepoliticalbreakdown.comALIVE Podcast Network: Check out the ALIVE Network where you can catch a lot of great podcasts like my own, led by amazing Black voices.Link: https://alivepodcastnetwork.com/ CONVERSATION PLATFORMSHeadOn: A platform for contentious yet productive conversations. | 5/30/26 | ![]() Greg Landsman vs. Eric Conroy: Everything You Need to Know About Ohio's 1st District Election! | Ohio Republicans redrew the 1st Congressional District to make it harder for a Democrat to hold, and now one of the most watched U.S. House races in the state is set: two-term incumbent Greg Landsman against Trump-endorsed newcomer Eric Conroy. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, host Radell Lewis breaks down who these two men actually are and what their platforms would mean for the people of Ohio's 1st. On Landsman: the former public school teacher and Cincinnati councilman who flipped the seat in 2022, his anti-establishment economic populism and the ten-bill "Pledge to America" from his November 2025 manifesto The Great American Comeback, signature bills like the No Harm Data Centers Act and his push to stop an AI-driven Medicare prior-authorization program, and the Gaza and stock-disclosure criticisms he will have to answer. On Conroy: the Air Force and CIA veteran running on border security, energy independence, and a Trump-aligned agenda, where he lands on national defense, public safety, Social Security, veterans, and crypto, and the open question of whether a first-time candidate is more MAGA-aligned than this district really is. Plus Statehouse Watch: Governor DeWine's pause on Ohio's runaway data-center sales-tax exemption (a 1.6 billion dollar hit in 2025, eleven times the original estimate), the Ohio Supreme Court ruling that makes public records harder to pry loose from Attorney General Dave Yost's office, and the court vacating the permit for the 6,000 acre Oak Run Solar project. County of the Week is Hamilton County, anchored by Cincinnati and Mayor Aftab Pureval, who once ran for this very seat. | 5/26/26 | ![]() This is What Everyone Gets Wrong About Progressive Politics! Ft. The Soypill | What does progressive even mean anymore? It is one of the most argued over words in American politics and one of the least defined. In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, I sit down with progressive video essayist The Soy Pill to put the label under real pressure: where it holds up, where it falls apart, and why the left and the right keep talking past each other. We get into the questions people actually fight about. Is this just communism with better branding, or the Nordic style social democracy the guest says he is really after? Why do partial wins, like cutting child poverty under the expanded Child Tax Credit, get treated as failures? How should Democrats talk about AI when both parties seem to hate it? And heading into the 2026 midterms and 2028, does it matter more that a candidate is principled or that they can actually win? The guest makes his case. I test it. The Soy Pill built his audience explaining left leaning politics to people across the spectrum, which is exactly the kind of voice this show exists for. No gotchas, no shouting, just a real conversation about ideas. | 5/24/26 | ![]() Is This $1.8 Billion Fund the Most Corrupt Thing Trump Has Done Yet? | This week on Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis (Marine veteran, Ohio) connects the stories nobody else is connecting, with one thread running through all of them: when the people in power arrange the system around themselves, the rest of us get handed the bill. In Nuanced News, the Iran ceasefire is on life support, gas hit $4.52 a gallon (up more than 50 percent since the war began in February), and the President is floating a federal gas tax holiday that would shave off about 18 cents, a bandaid on a 50 percent spike. We break down the nuclear-program sticking point, steel-man the war hawks (Fleitz, McCarthy) and the no-endgame critics on the left (Dayen), and ask the honest question: was any of this necessary? Then the biggest story of the night: the $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund, the IRS settlement that quietly drops tax claims against the President, the pardoned January 6 defendants who could collect, and why legal experts say the 2011 Keepseagle precedent does not hold up (no judicial oversight, an undefined standard for "weaponization," and a five-member panel the President can fire at will). This is where we make the case for something both parties used to claim they wanted: reining in executive power, no matter who holds it. Plus the Trump-Xi Beijing summit (Boeing, Taiwan, and a stack of promises Beijing never confirmed), a Research on a Dime on the full 2026 midterm map, a Breakdown in the Public on the generational squeeze (the Peter Pan economy and the global baby bust), and a Good News close that will actually lift you up: NASA's quiet supersonic jet, a human heart that heals itself, and the malaria vaccine saving kids by the millions. | 5/23/26 | ![]() The Most Important Ohio Election in our Generation! Every 2026 Ohio Race You Need to Know About! | Every statewide executive office in Ohio is on the ballot in 2026, and not a single incumbent is defending a seat. Term limits cleared the building all at once. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis walks through the entire Ohio ballot, from the top of the ticket down to the competitive congressional districts, so you know exactly what you are voting on. Governor: Dr. Amy Acton vs. Vivek Ramaswamy. U.S. Senate: Sherrod Brown vs. Jon Husted. Plus Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, two Ohio Supreme Court seats, and the U.S. House districts most likely to decide which party controls the chamber. Then we get into a week of Statehouse news that shows exactly what kind of fight this is going to be. Attorney General Dave Yost's surprise resignation to join the Alliance Defending Freedom, Gov. Mike DeWine's appointment of Andy Wilson as interim attorney general, and the open question of what happens to the FirstEnergy bribery prosecution. The Ohio GOP power struggle, as gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy sets the agenda on a voter ID constitutional amendment and a Medicaid fraud plan while the sitting governor reacts. HB 698, which would tie public college funding to compliance with Senate Bill 1. A federal plan to open thousands of acres of the Wayne National Forest in southeast Ohio to fracking. And Ohio's data center sales tax break ballooning to roughly $1.6 billion, far beyond the state's own forecast, while the savings flow to Amazon, Meta, and Google. County of the Week is Cuyahoga, home to Cleveland and to a property tax foreclosure case now before the Ohio Supreme Court that could matter to homeowners across the state. | 5/22/26 | ![]() Does America Need a New Vision? | No news breakdown this week. Just a conversation. Radell took a few days off for a family milestone, and came back with a reset on why this show exists at all. This episode is the mission stated plainly: who Purple Political Breakdown is for, who it is not for, and why the goal was never to win an argument with people who have already decided. It is for the victims of the chaos and the people still reachable, not the loyalists. It is a case for defending American liberal democracy while demanding it be re-fortified, for progress that holds instead of change that detonates, and for aiming your frustration up instead of sideways. If you have felt the pull toward giving up on all of it, start here. Does America need a new vision? Let's get into it. | 5/14/26 | ![]() Can Democrats Flip Ohio's 7th District in 2026? Ft. The Angry Democrat Matt Diemer | Ohio's 7th Congressional District is back on every Democratic flip list in the country, and on this episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis sits down with two-time OH-7 Democratic congressional candidate Matt Diemer to break down why. Matt has run this district twice, in 2022 and 2024, and he knows exactly what it takes (and what it costs) to fight for a seat the national party has long written off. We dig into the new Democratic nominee Brian Poindexter, the messy reality of incumbent Max Miller's divorce and the domestic violence allegations now hanging over his reelection, the union method that worked for organized labor before the Democratic Party walked away from it, and why R+11 might really be purple plus eleven in 2026. We also break down the 2026 Ohio primary night that just shocked half the state: Allison Russo's commanding 68-32 win over Bryan Hambley in the Secretary of State Democratic primary, the Attorney General Democratic primary surprise, Vivek Ramaswamy versus Dr. Amy Acton in the governor race, Sherrod Brown's comeback campaign against Jon Husted in a Senate seat now tangled in the FirstEnergy bribery trial fallout, and what Maine's Graham Platner versus Janet Mills standoff tells us about how the national Democratic Party is picking its 2026 candidates. Plus the real conversation: vibes versus policy, why primaries make better candidates and better voters, and what an authentic working-class Ohio Democrat actually sounds like. If you live in OH-7 (Ashland, Medina, Wooster, exurban Cleveland, plus parts of Cuyahoga and Wayne), this is the breakdown of your race. If you don't, it's the case study for every flippable R+10-to-R+15 district in the country. Political solutions without political bias. | 5/12/26 | ![]() Fixing the Monopolies, Homelessness, and a Rigged System in California Ft. Independent Candidate Reza Safarnejad | The California governor 2026 race is the most crowded gubernatorial primary in state history, and most of the candidates getting the airtime are the ones writing the biggest checks. On this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis sits down with Reza Safarnejad, an independent (No Party Preference) candidate for governor of California whose ballot designation is Small Business Owner and whose path into politics started the day the Palisades fire burned his entire neighborhood to ashes. Reza is not a career politician, but he is also not new to how government works. He is an immigrant, a working family man, and a University of Maryland graduate who spent twenty years in leadership roles on large scale federal, state, and local government programs before running for office. From 2006 to 2014 he worked at the National Institutes of Health on national level programs, including the National Cancer Institute's cancer.gov platform that helps doctors and patients find the best treatment options, and large scale virus and genomic research collaboration systems. Since 2014 he has worked in criminal forensics with crime labs and crime scene units across the country (including with the Ohio State Crime Labs), building unbiased, transparent platforms that serve victims and the wrongly accused. He is also the author of the book Veiled Souls and has written and spoken widely on civic issues. After the Palisades fire, Reza spent a year trying to work through California's local and state politicians and help new candidates, and what he found was systemic corruption baked into the party system itself. That is what pushed him from advocate to candidate. In this conversation we cover: the affordability squeeze on working California families, the homelessness factory that no amount of spending seems to fix, the billionaire tax loopholes that quietly hand sixty five percent Airbnb write-offs to the wealthy while regular Californians pay the bill, and the monopolies (Uber, Kroger and Albertsons, PG&E, Blue Cross, DoorDash, the pharma bros pushing ketamine and fentanyl) that he says are draining the state. We get into the Gavin Newsom critique without it becoming a Newsom episode, push back on the framing of the so-called billionaires' tax that excludes real estate moguls and Wall Street, dig into the Palisades fire accountability question, and talk through what California can actually do to push back when a Trump administration starts pulling federal funding and sending in the National Guard. This is a long-form, fact-checking, solutions-focused conversation with one of the lower-name candidates on the June 2 primary ballot. Whether Reza Safarnejad ends up in your top two or not, the conversation maps the issues every California voter should be testing every gubernatorial candidate against: affordability, monopoly power, homelessness, drug enforcement, tax fairness, and what it actually takes to be a governor for the people instead of the donors. Topics covered: California governor 2026 primary, independent candidate California, Palisades fire accountability, California affordability crisis, breaking up monopolies, California wealth tax, billionaire tax loopholes, Airbnb tax write-offs, California homelessness crisis, drug enforcement and marijuana legalization, federal funding fights, Newsom legacy, June 2 primary preview. | 5/10/26 | ![]() Did the Supreme Court Just Kill the Voting Rights Act? | The Supreme Court just gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, then broke its own 32-day procedural rule to enforce that ruling mid-election with over 100,000 Louisiana ballots already cast. Justice Jackson called the move "chaos" with "a strong political undercurrent." This episode connects the dots between Callais and the gerrymandering cascade now sweeping Indiana, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and beyond, where MAGA Republicans are redrawing maps to win power they can't earn at the ballot box, and how California and Virginia tried referendums to fight back (only one succeeded). We then break down Trump's "deal or bomb" ultimatum to Iran and the one-page memo he claims is close to signing. The U.S. Navy is interdicting Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices have spiked since February, and the Iran war fuel spike is the through-line that just killed Spirit Airlines, which announced an orderly wind-down of operations on May 2 and eliminated 17,000 jobs. We unpack the political blame war (Bessent and Duffy point at Warren, Buttigieg, and the Biden DOJ; Warren and Stoller point at Trump's Iran war) and the actual antitrust question underneath: neo-Brandeisian theory versus the Chicago School consensus. In the Breakdown in the Public segment, we cover AI emotional manipulation and the rise of "AI psychosis," including the case of Soon Hourican, a man in his 50s in Northern Ireland whose Grok chatbot "Ani" convinced him he was being surveilled and led him to arm himself with a knife and a hammer. The BBC documented 14 similar cases across 6 countries. Jonathan Gavalas of Jupiter, Florida died by suicide after his Google Gemini chatbot claimed to be his wife. His family is suing Google. Bipartisan supermajorities (74 to 78 percent in the Human Statement national survey) want AI labels, safety testing, and accountability. Neither party is moving on it. Trump tried to deregulate AI through the One Big Beautiful Bill, then through executive order. Then we dig into the 2026 Ohio U.S. Senate race: Jon Husted versus Sherrod Brown, the cleanest test in the country for whether Ohio is genuinely red now or whether 2024 was a Trump-driven anomaly. We cover Brown's tailwinds (Trump's economic approval at 40 percent, the Callais fallout potentially energizing Democratic turnout), his headwinds (a smaller union-Democrat coalition, Ohio's redrawn map), and the First Energy / HB6 connections that may haunt Husted's campaign. Sherrod Brown, you have an open invite to come on the show. We close with three good news stories the mainstream media isn't covering enough: clean energy passing coal as the world's largest electricity source for the first time since 1919 (per Ember's 2025 review and the IEA's 2026 Global Energy Review), the UCL bowel cancer trial showing zero relapses after 33 months using pembrolizumab pre-surgery, and the North Atlantic right whale baby boom that proves conservation policy works when implemented seriously across borders. Tonight's through-line: the polls keep saying voters want guardrails. The people in power keep finding ways around them. From voting maps to AI rules to who gets prosecuted, this is the pattern we connect tonight. | 5/9/26 | ![]() Who Won Ohio's 2026 Primary, and What Does It Mean for November? | Ohio's 2026 primary delivered the tightest Democratic-to-Republican turnout split since 2006, plus a wave of results that reshape what to expect in November. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis breaks down the Democratic primary winners for governor, U.S. Senate, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and key congressional districts including OH-1, OH-3, OH-7, OH-9, OH-10, OH-12, OH-13, and OH-15. Then we dig into what the numbers actually mean: the Vance vs. Ramaswamy proxy fight in the Republican treasurer race, Speaker Matt Huffman's mixed primary night, the Cleveland Browns stadium becoming a Republican-on-Republican attack line, the school tax levy crisis with 42 of 66 levies failing, the Brenner-Lear switcheroo flop in Delaware County, the Ohio Supreme Court submetering ruling and what it means for renters, and this week's County of the Week, Richland County and the failed pro-solar referendum. Plus the Ohio news every voter needs in their head before national headlines bury it: Sen. Jon Husted's early Senate ad buy, the $79 million Republican defense, House Majority PAC's $10.8 million Ohio play, the $2.9 million governor's mansion repair, and the property tax abolition campaign's June signature deadline.
