A fellow club member made custom decals for “Nana and Pops Rescue Service”, with a logo I designed of a bare bum passing explosive gas. It was flown by my brother’s nom de plume, “Rocco Flamefart”…. Anyway, he wants more vehicles for the “fleet”, so I am now building a Heller 1/72 DC6B in N&P markings!I also have been working on the old Hobbycraft 1/28 Fokker DR1. The location is about 3 hours north of Madison where the IPMS-USA Nationals were held last year. I’ve enclosed a copy of our flyer for more details.I truly enjoy your show and find your information very helpful in my modeling projects. I model a little bit of everything from cars, planes, armor, to si-fi. I also enjoy reading and just finished “100 Missions North” by Col. Ken Bell who flew a F-105 during Vietnam. The book was a easy read and provided a look into the lives of “Thud” drivers during that difficult time. Check it out.Take care.James W. Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com.Hi Guys,Listening to Episode 153, I want to commend for your Literature reading, the novels by Philip Kerr. He wrote a series of 13 books in which the protagonist is a German policeman: they begin during the Weimar Republic years, span the Nazi period, and continue into the post-WW II era. The writing style leans heavily towards Raymond Chandler. They are NOT for the squeamish, however, as the historical accuracy is pretty spot-on. I recommend starting with Kerr's final volume, "Metropolis", which is set historically before the rest of the books in the series. As a testament to how much I like these books, I've read the entire series TWICE!Lastly, Stuart commented, in regard to a new Eduard Bf-109 E kit, that Adolf Galland had the most aerial victories in WW II. Actually, that should have been Erich Hartmann, a German fighter pilot who served mostly, I believe, on the Russian front.Love your podcast,Dave Kensy Martin Hulst reached out from Holland! Fast, small and fun. I even decided to try and finish them with paints from the era - old Polly Scale acrylics! An old kit from the Soviet era, but not too bad for detail, and very simple.Terry - Getting close to done on the Moosaroo entry. Lighting tests with the subject in the box, some slight tweaks to get things just right and I should be taking photos this weekend. I have some work travel this week, so I may not get any more done until then. I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for the kind mention on the latest episode of the podcast. It was very unexpected but really made my day. Thank you too for all the great work you Terry and Geoff do at Scale Model Podcast and for all your tireless efforts to promote the hobby. Wheels are now on and just a few more things to do. Airbrushes are on the way back from Badger. Looking forward to getting them back.Got a Tamiya 1/48 Sherman Firefly for the 48 hour build in March. Nice looking kit.Geoff - finished off the IBG 1/72 IAR80 and wrote the article on it for IPMS Canada, although you may never see it. Bottom line: very nice kit. Continued on the old Revell 1/72 Arado what if Amerika bomber. I couldn’t find my lead weights, so I decided to do it in flight, perhaps dropping bombs over the NYC skyline, although in light of recent international events, I may have to find a red state with a recognizable skyline as a base! I wonder if anyone makes a 3D file of Mar a Lago?Terry: Work continues apace on the Moosaroo. The shadowbox is coming along nicely. I hope to be done shortly. The Phalanx is looking good, not much more on this either but I’ve said that for a month now. I do need to get a new windscreen for the Wingsy Claude, it broke in half in the bag. It is quite thin plastic.***************************************WHAT WE ARE READINGStuart - I’ve been in a reading kick lately instead of spending as much time on social media. Finished Titan and Moonseed by Stephen Baxter, now moving on to a collection of short stories by him called Traces.Geoff - I’ve been ploughing through a complete collection of Scale Airplane Modeller magazine and been fascinated by the fact that model debates never seem to change! Prices are too high, people who just collect kits, thus raising market prices for builders, are evil, who needs fancy new paints, IPMS judging sucks, etc. The UK magazine was quite parochial, and although there was a ton of good information on UK aircraft, they do get a tad stuck on themselves - back in 1988 at least.Terry: Apparently I’ve fallen behind Stuart! I’m halfway through Stephen Baxter’s Titan. Also reading the first series of Bleach Manga. It tracks very close to the anime.***************************************SPONSOR AD #2Seans Custom Model Tools***************************************TopicHello Gentlemen!I have a show discussion topic for you all to ponder: SCALE WARS!The premise is as simple as it is fictional. Imagine I have hired each of you as a consultant to my brand new (again, fictional) scale model manufacturing company. I want to shake up the injection-molded kit industry and I’m relying on your knowledge and expertise. I am not interested in which kit you want made that either doesn’t exist yet or is in need of a new tooling. Instead, I want to know your opinions on scale.I am tasking you each individually with two assignments in this discussion. Time and money are not considerations here (the most fictional part of all). You MUST eliminate a standard/popular modeling scale from a genre of your choosing and justify your choice (for the snarky-minded amongst you, “box scale” does not count). Or “They shouldn’t have picked that scale.”You SHALL replace the eliminated scale by adding a new scale for any modeling genre of your choice that you believe is not represented well in the industry — or even at all — and you must tell me why I should invest in your idea. Or “Why they should have picked this scale instead.”Remember, in this scenario you are a pool of consultants competing with each other to have your pitch chosen — so bring your A game to your arguments!I know modelers can have strong opinions about their preferred scale(s) so I hope this is taken in the spirit of fun but if a friendship or two gets dented - well, we can’t let that stand in the way of progress.Good luck and may the best arguments win!Rick BakerScale Model Outlier Terry’s Suggestion:I say we go to a Roman Numeral system, essentially a decimal system.I is 1:1.V is 1:5X is 1:10L is 1:50C is 1:100D is 1:500M is 1:1000 I suppose you could get larger if you need, for things like starships.***************************************THINGS WE’VE SEEN3D Wild building a 1/200 C5 GalaxyVince Hoffman restoring another RC Tank. Geoff - IPMS London member George Wray and I were tagged to build a couple of IAR80 review models from IBG in Poland - George isn’t renovating a house, so his review was published in the latest IPMS Canada RT online magazine this month. His work is excellent, so I’ve been pushing myself to finish my version for the next issue. It’s a beautiful kit - maybe what Wingnut Wings would do if they did 1/72 WW2 Romanian fighters… Terry - Work continues apace on the Moosaroo project. Mocking up the shadowbox has shown me a couple of things I’ll need to change. Groundwork looks good so far, but a lot left to do. I need to get into the airbrush booth for the sub and some other items but will wait until it warms up a little. Some progress on both the Destroid Phalanx, which should be done in a short while and the Claude which is just in the cockpit phase now. Plenty of shelf queens waiting for some attention once bench space is available.***************************************WHAT WE ARE READINGStuart - Return of the King, On Terry’s recommendation read and finished Stephen Baxter’s Voyage,Geoff - Empire of the Summer Moon, by S.C. Gwynn - an excellent book about the history and destruction of the Comanche Nation in the southwest, centering around the remarkable last major Comanche leader, Quanah Parker. Apparently, it’s been picked up for a movie adaptation. Highly recommended. Also, “The Skystone” by Jack Whyte, the first in a three volume series about the fictional “true” story behind the Arthurian legend. Hint: the core things happened in the period after the collapse of Roman rule in Britain as it slid into the dark ages, but no magic or mysticism- just events that were elaborated on over time until the myth we know today solidified. My son in law recommended it ages ago and I am pretty sure I read it before, but it’s very good and hard to put down Terry: Finished Voyage by Steven Baxter, a very nice conjectural fiction about NASA going to Mars, and all the work and drama therein. I started his next book, Titan. The central conceit here is that Cassini/Huygens found life on Titan. I’m just in the early pages so it’s all place setting at this point. Also reading the Bleach Manga, now that it’s available in English for a decent price.***************************************SPONSOR AD #2Seans Custom Model Tools***************************************THINGS WE’VE SEENWilliam Adair 1/144 German WWI Fighter1/32 scratchbuilt Halifax IPMS Bolton, UKModel Airplane Maker’s 2025 wish list.<a href="https://www.migjimenez.com/en/ammo-new-releases/12077-atom-wwii-ammunit... | — | ||||||

Picked this up at Heritagecon last year. My Dad has a short wheelbase model and I’m doing it as a tribute build to him. Many sprues and much priming and painting.I gave my airbrushes a good deep clean over the holidays. One of my Badger airbrushes needs a good service. Badger offers a lifetime labor warranty on their airbrushes so I’m packing the 155 and my 105 for a well-deserved service. I’ve heard good things in the past from people who have used this service. These two brushes have served me for over 10+ years. Also picked up a Trumpeter 1/48 Westland Whirlwind and a 1/76 Nutrocker from an estate sale at the LHS.Geoff - still focused on home renovations, but I did do a little work on the IBG kit. (IAR 80) Finally went to our local hobby shop and met the new owner today, and picked up a stash kit - an old resin kit of the Martian war machine from the 1953 version of War of the Worlds!Terry - Work continues on the Moosaroo, the subject is coming along nicely and I need to start working on the diorama portion. The Wave Destroid Phalanx is moving along, with decals and some weathering. I’ll need to touch up some of the decals over the highly raised detail. My club, the Techmages, has started a BTS challenge, and I have plenty to finish up. I finally bought the old Grenadier (1993) Wyvern which has been staring at me from the high shelf in Games Plus. Beautifully cast, as were all the Grenadier miniatures.[foogallery id="3864"]***************************************SPONSOR AD #2Seans Custom Model Tools***************************************WHAT WE ARE READINGStuart - The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. Every few years I re-read Tolkien’s classic trilogy.Geoff - finished The Apollo Murders by Cmdr Chris Hatfield. Lots of fun and detail for space junkies. Also knee deep in “A Man on the Moon” by Andrew Chakin - a very deep dive into the lives of the Apollo astronauts and their personal experiences of their work. Very good.Terry - Reading Stephen Baxter’s Voyage, first of his alternate history series about going to Mars with Saturn V-era technology. It’s an interesting exploration of what could have happened, while most of the world’s events remain the same. It’s a big book, and follows a few people in two timelines, one on the Mars mission and one on the events which led to it. I've been building models since I was a small boy, probably around 6 or 7 years old when I used to sit with my dad while he made his HO scale train set. Took a break while in my teens and got back into the hobby around 21 after my mother fell ill and I was looking to get my mind off of all the craziness. I primarily build armour models, focused on mostly German and Russian WWII. I will also build the occasional modern armour subject or Sci Fi model like Gundam, or Star Wars. I am a very active member of Amps (Gotham Amps) and my local IPMS chapter (The Long Island Scale Model Society). I started the Modeling Insanity Podcast in May of 2023 after the Modeling Miscreant Podcast which I was a Co-Host on fell through. I am also now the Associate US Editor of Military Modelcraft International which is the largest English speaking Armor Military magazine in the world. I am a monthly contributor and reviewer for the magazine. I am known for my photo-etch and scratchbuilding. This year we will be adopting an Open/GSB judging format for the first time. In fact I’m pretty sure this will be the very first show ever to use an open judging format in the IPMS Region 9, which encompasses Northern California and Nevada. So we’ll be making a little history! With that in mind, the theme of our show will be “Evolution.”I have attached our show flyer below but the pertinent information is that: It will be held from 9-4 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Rohnert Park Community Center in Rohnert Park, California. Free admission and $12 entry fee for first 3 models. Lots of great vendors are lined up, we will have a terrific raffle, will be doing a build and take table and then the Open/GSB judging. We are also asking folks to bring kits and model building supplies to the show for donation to support our charity initiative for Help Heal Veterans, a wonderful organization that provides free theraputic kits and modeling supplies to veterans.***************************************MAILBAGWe want to hear from you! Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com.Hi Stuart,Paul ReddingJust to say I am following your Tamiya 1/350 build with interest as I bought the 1/450 Hasegawa version earlier this month as part of a carrier / IJN aircraft rabbit hole I went down...I have steered clear of anything Japanese all my modeling life but finally, curiosity got the better of me and I caved. Lots of research on IJN aircraft and how it all got built up resulted in about 18 aircraft kits...doh! Luckily there were some sales on including the canopy masks so that helped...I haven't built any warships before (except Airfix Victorious in 1/600 in the 60s as my father was on it in the Fleet Air Arm as a flight engineer bringing the aircraft up on deck and have pics of it in Sydney Harbour (see attached). You can also see its' sister ship Illustrious and maybe you / Geoff can identify the aircraft on board - Martlets? One photo shows an aircraft that seems to have stuffed it into the tower. I seem to have ended up with quite a few carriers as I also get sucked into watching docos on PBS America which is fatalA doco on the scuttling of the ships at Scarpa Flow and the film Sink The Bismark didn't help either so that ended up with a few more purchases; I can't see the detail in 1/700 so minimum is 1/450 or the usual 1/350Like you I try to stay away from PE but have bought a few railing kits and also for the radar arrays/antenna if not included; plus the wooden deck sets and a couple of brass barrel sets for Prince Eugen...I also concur with your plan to paint common parts on the sprues and build in sub-assemblies ( I have been doing this for my model railway wagon kits in batches of 4 or 6 - makes for alot simpler build)I am mentally prepared for a ship build; after 1/48 aircraft and 1/24 cars, its going to be very different.Hope the extended break allows y'all to recharge and come back rested - I build for the relaxation like I did all those years ago pre-internet and do it to my own standards ie no interest/point in trying to achieve the standards of some of the professional kit builders out there on YT or the forums***************************************LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTSICM's Eight September ReleasesBarracuda Studios ten new sets in two scales to upgrade your Mossie, Sea Fury & YakNew 35th scale WWII US Tank Crew from Border ModelTakom's 35th scale M29C Weasel in Arctic/Antarctic Expedition VehicleTTakom's new art & a BIG box combine their Sd.Kfz.201/1 & 3 + Rommel figure1/72 Bandai PG Millennium Falcon is being rereleased in March1/48 - Mitsubishi/Nakajima A6M5 Type 52 Hei/"Zero" by Finemolds - Dec 2024Gecko to release the Mk I version of the Universal Carrier in 1/16th scaleDB Model Kits [DBMK] is planning to release a plastic-injected Spitfire Mk.XIV in 1:32 scaleLukgraph RAF BE2c in 1:32 scaleMiniArt Kits Available September 2024 What’s new at Scalemates.com ***************************************SPONSOR AD #1Cult TV Man***************************************Topic - The state of publishing magazines from Rob’s view**************************************WHAT’S ON THE BENCHStuart - Not a ton of time but finished Yamato and started a 1/72 Italeri F-22 which will be made into a what-if CF-22. They keep the website up to date with new paint releases, and include historical references, a blog and a model gallery where they do an in-depth magazine style feature on different kits finished using their paints.https://arcus-hobby.store/Stay safe,Joel from Mansfield in the UK****Good day Stuart,I hope you're well.Thank you for the podcast, which is excellent.Geoff's Zeppelin diorama was 100% fun and I am sure the actual documentary record of this event was lost/destroyed prior to Germany's defeat in World War 1.I have attached two pictures from the latest issue of New Scientist magazine (a weekly science magazine from here in the UK, which I believe is available in Canada). The feature of interest, "The Power of Solitude" suggests our solitary hobby is good for our health if you exclude the chemicals we may be breathing in! The term used is "crafting solitude" where we carry out a meaningful solitary activity which reduces stress and anxiety and improves relaxation. Here in the UK some doctors working in our National Health Service ( still 'free' at the point of delivery) do social prescribing linking people to activities and social groups to improve well-being. Help for Heroes has already established that model making helps with mental health. So maybe the next time I visit my GP, I will be prescribed an Airfix model kit!Best wishes to the team.ArtiSurrey. Working on some battle mechs as as well as the first of two Ornithopters from the latest Dune movie. Meng made a kit similar in quality to the Bandai micro Star Wars kits. The first one I built in a landed configuration. I should have added nose weight to it, but it’s going on a base so I can glue it down. I think the scale is around 1/200[foogallery id="3618"]Geoff - finishing off the Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls project, which has been fast and fun. I also put two articles together for IPMS Canada - on the Zeppelin project and my 1/32 Revell Lysander target tug. Now I’m back at the Moebius 1/144 Discovery from 2001 which is the subject of another long delayed article. My guilt at the delay finally forced me to get at it![foogallery id="3611"]Terry - Moving along with the XP-47H. Looking good under some paint, so I am cautiously optimistic. The Haseagawa Regult is looking good under some paint as well.[foogallery id="3623"]***************************************WHAT WE ARE READING Geoff - Finished Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell - a good book about SAS operations in Desert Storm.Stuart - The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed HistoryTerry - Finished Handmade. Very interesting, and more about how she interacts with the materials while making all these items, it’s a very personal book. Still reading the same other books as before, but deciding what to dive into next.***************************************SPONSOR AD #2Seans Custom Model Tools***************************************THINGS WE’VE SEENLook Geoff - a new pterosaur!https://www.palaeocast.com/ceoptera-evansae/3D files for a 1/48 Avro Arrow??
