Today we spoke with Daragh Fleming - Writer and award-winning mental health activist Daragh Fleming is an author, freelance writer, and award-winning mental health blogger from Cork, Ireland. He has an MA in Linguistics, a BA in Applied Psychology, and a head full of notions as he says. Daragh has a passion for normalising the chat around mental health, and is the founder of Thoughts Too Big, a blog and enterprise that focuses on overcoming daily mental health issues. Daragh’s debut in non-fiction, Lonely Boy, a collection of essays on mental health arrives on November 24th 2022. Today we spoke with John O’Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist, and Running coach John has conquered 7 marathons on 7 continents. Today we spoke with Cody Royle - Coach, Best-selling Author, and Former Head Coach AFL Team Canada Cody is a coach to coaches. Author of 'The Tough Stuff' and 'Where Others Won't', he coaches 15 head coaches from 7 team sports globally. Roles range from cultural architect, mentor, confidante, facilitator, sounding board to idea generator; he has worked with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Pittsburgh Pirates, Premier League...amongst others. We spoke about self-care for coaches, his coaching philosophy, and how his writing style changed from his first book to his latest - how his confidence and voice grew from experience. Today we spoke with Mike Brown - English professional rugby player, with 72 caps for England Mike has amassed 340 appearances for Harlequins (and 500 points), 12 for Newcastle and 72 caps for the England national rugby union team. Predominantly a full back, Mike has won three 6 Nations titles with England and two English Premiership titles with Harlequins. He won the 2014 RBS Six Nations player of the championship award...and is renowned for his work ethic, tenacity and ability to attack with ball in hand. Today we unpacked the full back position and why that was the position for Mike (he started as a 10, has the heart of a 6). We discussed leadership, culture and high performing teams, all areas of interest for Mike, which he is studying as a part of the Sports Directorship, at Manchester Metropolitan University. Mike explained the intricacies of bringing club players from different environments and playing styles together for the national team, and the challenges of that for England. Today we spoke with Professor Brendan Kelly - Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght University Hospital Dr Brendan Kelly is a medical doctor who has specialised in psychiatry. His research interests include the epidemiology of psychosis, mental health services, the history of psychiatry, and human rights in mental health. He is most interested in the extent to which persons with mental illness participate in civic and social life, and the barriers they and their families face in exercising their rights, including economic and social rights. Brendan contributes frequently to print and broadcast media and writes regularly for the medical press. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry and has a new book called 'In Search of Madness: A Psychiatrist's Travels Through the History of Mental Illness', following the success of 'The Science of Happiness: The Six Principles of a Happy Life and the Seven Strategies for Achieving It'; reminds us of our chat with Dr Tim Sharp, #132. Brendan compared psychology and psychiatry for us, and where they compliment each other in practice.
