| 2/28/05 | ![]() The Tikbalang: Shape-Shifter | Stories Philippines · Episode## Episode 9: The Tikbalang: Shape-ShifterThe night is quiet and the forest is dark. Angel and Paul dive deep into one of the most iconic creatures in Filipino folklore — the Tikbalang. This half-human, half-horse shape-shifter has been guarding the forests of the Philippines for centuries, leading travelers astray, marrying during sunshowers, and punishing anyone who disrespects the land. From a hiker who met it on Mount Banahaw, to a girl who saw its wedding procession in the rain, to a farmer who tamed it with a golden bridle and paid the ultimate price — the Tikbalang is not just a monster. It is the forest itself.## Timestamps- 00:00 — Welcome and host introductions- 01:30 — Historical context: The Tikbalang in Filipino mythology- 04:00 — Story 1: The Hiker on Mount Banahaw- 12:00 — Discussion: The forest guardian- 14:00 — Story 2: The Wedding in the Rain- 20:00 — Discussion: The sunshower wedding- 22:00 — Story 3: The Golden Bridle- 28:00 — Discussion: The long game- 30:00 — Closing and CTA## Story Summaries**The Hiker on Mount Banahaw**Paul tells the story of Rico, an experienced mountaineer who encountered a Tikbalang on a solo hike near Mount Banahaw. At the three kilometer mark, trail markers vanished and were replaced by a massive Balete tree. Sitting on its roots was a tall, bony creature with golden eyes and impossibly long legs. When it took a single step, its hoofprint cracked solid stone. The trees moved aside for it as it walked into the forest. Rico walked back down the trail with footsteps following him the entire way.**The Wedding in the Rain**Angel narrates Lorna's story from Antique province. At twelve years old, Lorna saw a Tikbalang wedding procession during a sunshower. Seven impossibly tall figures walked through the rain in a field near her house, untouched by the water. Her grandmother made her drink salt water to cleanse her eyes. Lorna has never looked at a sunshower the same way since.**The Golden Bridle**Paul tells the most disturbing story of Tomas, a farmer from Rizal province whose crops were being destroyed by a Tikbalang. An albularyo told him to grab three golden hairs from the creature's mane during mating season. Tomas succeeded and the Tikbalang became his servant. His crops grew beyond imagination. But the creature followed him everywhere, watching with golden eyes. After three years, the Tikbalang broke free, and Tomas's field died overnight. The albularyo vanished. The Tikbalang had planned the whole thing.## Hosts- **Angel** — Co-host, brings personal stories and cultural perspective- **Paul** — Co-host, provides research and historical context## Topics- Tikbalang (half-human, half-horse shape-shifter)- Balete trees (strangler fig trees, supernatural portals)- Filipino folk healing (albularyo, salt water cleansing)- Sunshower wedding folklore- Golden bridle legend- Mount Banahaw, Quezon province- Antique province folklore- Rizal province farming communities- Filipino forest guardianship beliefs- Engkanto and nature spirits## DisclaimerThis episode is for informational and entertainment purposes only. | 2/21/05 | ![]() Sightings at Corregidor Island | Stories Philippines · Episode ## Episode 8: Sightings at Corregidor Island The night is quiet and the island is dark. Angel and Paul take you to one of the most haunted locations in the Philippines — Corregidor Island. This small island in Manila Bay witnessed some of the bloodiest battles of World War Two, and the spirits of thousands of dead soldiers never left. From a ghostly nurse who still tends to wounded patients in Malinta Tunnel, to an explosion that replays every night at 2:53 AM, to an American soldier who still waits at the dock for a ferry that will never come — Corregidor is not just haunted. It is alive with the dead. ## Timestamps - 00:00 — Introduction and cold open - 02:00 — Historical context: The Battle of Corregidor - 05:00 — The Jabidah Connection - 07:00 — Story 1: The Hospital Lateral (Malinta Tunnel) - 20:00 — Story 2: The Banzai Echo (Malinta Tunnel east entrance) - 30:00 — Story 3: The Soldier on the Dock (Cavite-Corregidor ferry route) - 40:00 — Discussion: The dead outnumber the living - 44:00 — Closing ## Story Summaries **The Hospital Lateral** Paul tells the story of Cristina, a Corregidor tour guide with fifteen years of experience who has never entered Malinta Tunnel alone. During a night tour in 2019, her group of eight tourists encountered the ghost of a nurse in the hospital lateral — a woman in white tending to rows of phantom patients on cots. The nurse looked up with an exhausted, sad face and silently asked for help before the flashlight flickered and the lateral went empty. Cristina has seen the nurse three more times since, always at night, always alone, still tending to the wounded after eighty years. **The Banzai Echo** Angel narrates Daniel’s story — a paranormal investigator from Quezon City who spent a night alone near Malinta Tunnel in 2022. At 2:47 AM, his audio recorders captured Japanese chanting — a military loyalty oath. At 2:53 AM, the chanting was replaced by dozens of screams and a massive explosion that shook the ground and maxed out his microphone. Daniel believes he captured a residual haunting — the echo of February 23, 1945, when trapped Japanese soldiers detonated explosives inside the tunnel, killing themselves rather than surrendering. The collapsed laterals have never been excavated. The bodies are still inside. **The Soldier on the Dock** Paul tells the most heartbreaking story — from Rodel, a ferry operator on the Cavite-Corregidor route for twelve years. Once a month, after the last ferry has returned and the island is empty, Rodel sees a light on the Corregidor dock. Through binoculars, he has seen it is a kerosene lantern held by a figure in an American World War Two uniform. The soldier stands at the dock for about twenty minutes, facing the water, facing home — then turns and walks toward Malinta Tunnel, disappearing into the dark. Sometimes, on the wind, Rodel can hear the soldier whistling an old American song from the 1940s. ## Hosts - **Angel** — Co-host, brings personal stories and cultural perspective - **Paul** — Co-host, provides research and historical context ## Topics - Corregidor Island, Cavite - Malinta Tunnel (831 feet, 1,000-bed hospital) - Battle of Corregidor (1942 and 1945) - Angels of Bataan (WWII army nurses) - Japanese suicide explosion (February 23, 1945) - Jabidah massacre (1968) - Bataan Death March - Filipino folklore: namamahay, tawo-tawo, restless dead - Residual hauntings and military ghosts - WWII Pacific Theater ## Disclaimer This episode is for informational and entertainment purposes only. A newlywed woman in the Visayas prays the Holy Rosary at three in the morning on Easter Sunday and hears something laughing above her. A family in Pampanga moves into a generations-old house where the walls remember every tenant. And a boy in Rodriguez, Rizal, discovers he is not the only child playing in his sister's room. ## Timestamps - 00:00 — Introduction and cold open - 01:00 — Disclaimer and content warning - 01:30 — Show intro and host introductions - 05:00 — True Encounters Volume Two introduction - 08:00 — Story 1: Esperanza's Rosary — Aswang encounter in the Visayas - 20:00 — Discussion and reaction - 23:00 — Story 2: The Kubu — Haunted ancestral house in Pampanga - 34:00 — Discussion and tension builds - 37:00 — Story 3: The Shadow Child — Rodriguez, Rizal - 47:00 — Discussion and closing thoughts - 50:00 — Outro ## Story Summaries **Esperanza's Rosary** A newlywed woman in a Visayan subdivision decides to pray the Holy Rosary at three in the morning on Easter Sunday. The moment she makes the sign of the cross, she feels a heavy presence watching her. Thuds and footsteps come from the attic above. Her husband, sleeping upstairs, hears a mocking laugh she cannot — as if the entity does not want her to know it is there. Days later, she discovers she is pregnant. The creature knew before she did. **The Kubu** A family in Pampanga moves into a generations-old house, a traditional Kubu that has seen countless tenants come and go. From the first night, the mother cannot sleep. She hears dishes crashing in the kitchen, but nothing is ever disturbed. Years later, her daughter hears a woman whispering through the thin plywood walls. When she calls out to the neighbor, he heard it too. He was just too scared to respond. **The Shadow Child** A family forced to relocate to Rodriguez, Rizal, moves into a house next to an abandoned building with an open window. On the first night, the older sister experiences sleep paralysis — a cold, rubbery grip on her throat that only breaks when she rebukes it in the name of Jesus. Her younger brother, often left alone, discovers a shadow child sitting on a suitcase in the corner, watching him play. The presence is not always frightening. Sometimes it feels almost friendly. ## Hosts - **Angel** — Co-host, brings personal stories and cultural perspective - **Paul** — Co-host, provides research and historical context ## Topics - Aswang encounters and the three in the morning phenomenon - The Holy Rosary as spiritual protection in Filipino culture - Ancestral houses and generational hauntings in Pampanga - Sleep paralysis and spiritual warfare in Filipino belief - Shadow children and paranormal playmates - The abandoned house next door and its influence - Mother's protective prayers and folk remedies - Filipino listener submissions from the Spookify community ## Disclaimer This episode is for informational and entertainment purposes only.
