At his Guisachan estate, he began with a yellow retriever named Nous and crossed him with a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. From this pairing came the first recorded litter in 1868, which included three puppies with delightfully floral names: Cowslip, Crocus, and Primrose. These three are considered the world's first true Golden Retrievers. Over twenty years, Lord Tweedmouth refined the breed by introducing crosses with Labradors, Irish Setters, and Bloodhounds to enhance their water-retrieving abilities, intelligence, and temperament.
