| 2/27/25 | ![]() Extra Time - Don't be obsessed with match play and performance | In this Extra Time edition of the The Inner Huddle Perry discusses why it's not beneficial to judge your child's progress simply based on how they perform in matches. Matches help children learn the game and develop intuition and understanding, but, in terms of football development, one to three minutes contact time with the ball isn't enough. The result, and how your child played, is also not a good guide to how well your child is developing. A very important episode! The questions are listed below. Does shouting out from the side lines really ever achieve anything positive? Chapter 26 - Embrace and encourage rotation of players to play in different positions. My son’s team does not give a top scorer award but every team at the club does. So I buy him the trophy myself with the club badge on and give it to him on the day of the presentation (when he is top goal scorer). I don’t see an issue with this. Chapter 90 - Children are like seeds. If a player has made it known that they are leaving for a new team at the end of the season and do not turn up for 5 training sessions in a row (possibly training with the new team) but still expect to play on a Sunday - would you still play them? Genuinely interested to hear your thoughts. Do you have any advice for helping my son to scan more or know of any drills that might help…? Chapter 66 - Playing for more than one team My 9 year old lad has been told his grassroots team aren’t going to resign him next season as he’s not good enough. He’s devastated that he’ll no longer be able to play with his friends. He didn’t play as much as the other players this season but still loved it. Do you have any advice on what we should do next to help him? Chapter 104 - Moments of magic What are your views on game time for young players from u7s to u11s? In our team all the parents pay the same fee but not all players get the same playing time. The questions are listed below. I love players that can go past other players and mavericks of the game. Do you think this country will produce more flair players in the future or has the game changed now…? Chapter 3 - Embrace Mistakes and Failure I’m a coach for an U8s team and in training I play lots of small sided games. The players don’t really have set positions and it’s all about contact time with the ball and having fun. However, I have at least two players who tell me that they’re not allowed to play in goal when it’s their turn. One even said “my dad will kill me!”. It leaves me in an awkward position. I just wondered what your thoughts on this are? Chapter 40 - What to do if your child wants to quit I had a brief run through the chapters in your book but I am unsure if there is anything on dealing with on field ‘trash talking’ from opponents? this has occurred a few times recently to my youngest boy and has made him very upset and in tears. I believe it is just a tactic to get under his skin and affect his performance. Any help would be appreciated in how to block this out mentally. Chapter 114 - Don't be a PlayStation parent How late is too late to join a grassroots team if you’ve decided you want to play professionally? I have a 13-year-old who’s suddenly decided that’s what they want to do and is all they talk about. | 2/1/24 | ![]() Series 3 - Episode 2 - Youth Football Parents Q&A With Pez & Geoff | In the second episode of the new series Pez & Geoff answer questions sent in by parents and coaches along with discussing some of the chapters in Pez's new book (Did You Win, Did You Score...?) The questions are listed below. I recently started coaching my boys team who will move up to U7s this year. There seems to be a lot of pressure from people saying that they need to be playing loads of summer tournaments to ‘get them ready’ for their first season, but I’m just not sure it’s the right thing for them and they can get the same development playing small games together as a team. I don’t want to hold them back or for them to get hammered every week come September either as that won’t be enjoyable so wondered what your views were? Book chapter 142 - What is skill and what is technique...? Neither myself or my partner come from a football background so everything is new for us. Our son is an U9 with a local grassroots team and has progressed really well over the past year. I hear a lot of parents talk about the need, if we’re serious about his development, to play for two teams and to join an elite league. We’re confused about the whole thing and really need some guidance. Book chapter 29 - Avoid chasing the dream. I recently put a post on a Facebook group asking if anyone could recommend a 1 to 1 coach for my son to help increase his confidence. Lots of names were suggested, and people tagged, and now I’m not sure who the best one will be. What should I be looking for? Book chapter - 62 - Private coaching and one-to-one coaching - avoid the cowboys. | 11/12/23 | ![]() Series 2 - Episode 9 - Youth Football Parents Q&A With Pez & Geoff | In the penultimate episode of series two, Pez and Geoff answer more questions from parents to do with youth football. The following eight questions were used to trigger many different discussion points and is a must listen for all parents and coaches! There's lots of great advice for parents & coaches to help children fulfil their potential. Please subscribe, share and rate the podcast to help us grow and reach more like minded parents around the world. My son plays for a team with his friends, many of them have also started playing for another team. He’d really like to go along with them and play but by his own admission, he’s not as good as them. Do you have any tips on how he can improve quickly to help catch up…? I have run an U10 team for two seasons and have really enjoyed it. However, I’ve found it hard to keep players for this season as many left to join another club that play in a more glamourous league. One of the player’s dads literally “tapped” them all up towards the end of the season (having joined us at the start of the season) and they left in the summer. Although one has already come back as it was far too serious and not much fun. It’s really knocked my confidence and the way I’ve been treated has had an effect on my enthusiasm, to the point I’m not sure I want to do it anymore. Is tapping up a normal part of children’s football and should I quit if my enthusiasm has gone? My question is about academy football- my son loves to find space and pass and move, but when he’s at academy training and they do small sided matches…no one else passes. In fact you see players running into 6 opponents with their head down. And it’s encouraged. I get the 1v1 idea, beat the man etc. but even this surely needs coaching? Do I get my son to come and snatch the ball and copy others trying to take on the team untill they lose it or stick to making the choices he wants on standing off the play yelling for the ball which inevitably never comes! And will those coaches recognise his spatial awareness or see it as him not being involved? I have a daughter that plays u12’s football for a grassroots side. In pre-season a local academy held ‘elite’ trials, recommended to us by her coach she did them and was successful. The coach did not realise at the time that the ‘elite’ training clashes with her team training. She’s been doing half of her club then onto the elites straight after (her choice) now it’s dark that’s not possible and the coach has said if she chooses elites she will have to start on the bench come game day. Ultimate question is what should she do? She will improve with the elite training playing with better players but miss out on starting games. I’ve left all this up to her and she’s made all of the decisions around it so far. What is/are the biggest misconceptions about coaching youth football that you hear all the time? If my child wants a career in football (not necessarily as a player), other than the FA qualifications, what should they do to help support their future career? Why does playing Futsal enhance your football training? Who do you think is the best Futsal player in the world and why (past or present) Please send any questions you want answered/discussed to Pez at perry@pezzazstreetsoccer.com or 07818225592 This episode was sponsored by SR Health, Safety & Engineering Ltd: https://www.srhse.co.uk/ Your hosts are: Perry Cocking (Pezzaz Street Soccer & formerly Southampton FC) - www.pezzazstreetsoccer.com https://www.facebook.com/perrycockingauthor Geoff Bonner (Wessex Futsal Club) - https://www.facebook.com/wessexfutsal | 1h 29m 51s | ||||||

He’s 12 years old and a pretty decent player. I don’t want him to quit and nor do his coaches but he’s made up his mind. It’s caused quite a bit of friction between us. Can you give me some advice please…? My son doesn’t like watching football with me. He plays in a team but when a big game is on he’d rather go upstairs and play on his Xbox. I feel I learned the most about the game by watching all the time. What are your thoughts? I live in an area where we have lots of football clubs, franchises and soccer schools. How do I know which one might be best for my child to attend…? Do you think that mindset is more important than talent? What do you think the future of youth football will look like in terms of developing players and what would you like to see? Do you think it’s more important to play more matches than it is to train? Please can I have some advice. Before my son started playing Futsal he was a very steady footballer. He would work hard, win the ball back and look for the best pass. He very rarely put a foot wrong but never really did anything to stand out! Since futsal he’s become a lot more confident on the ball and is happy to try and beat a man, however, he will now at times get himself in trouble during football matches by trying something new. Is that a normal part of his development?
