Are there ethical issues with medical AI that are unique? Any major technological development can have huge benefits and huge risks. And medical AI is no different. The benefits of medical AI are talked about endlessly. Much less so the risks. But what are those dangers? The Declaration of Helsinki is widely regarded as the cornerstone of human ⁠research ethics⁠. This a set of ethical principles regarding ⁠human experimentation⁠ developed originally in 1964 for the medical community by the ⁠World Medical Association⁠. The fundamental principle is respect for the individual, his or her right to self-determination and the right to make ⁠informed decisions⁠ regarding participation in research. But what is the support adn the Declaration of Helsinki? Is it for purpose? Or is it actually highly questionable in some circumstances? Joining Felix is Professor Erwin Loh, Chief Medical Officer for St Vincent's Health, Australia’s largest not-for-profit health care provider, Professor at Monash, Melbourne and Macquarie Universities and renowned author on medical AI.

Here we discuss the use of machine learning to predict outcomes of clinical trials. This is potentially a practical and robust way to develop tools for precision medicine and also offers possibilities for radical new approaches to drug development.

Artificial General Intelligence is the ability of an AI system to perform any intellectual task performed by humans. AI for fertility treatment, with Dr Peter Illingworth, of Virtus Health Virtus Health, one of the largest IVF companies in the world with more 40 clinics, is using AI to raise the success rate of IVF. On today’s podcast, Dr Felix Beacher, head of healthcare technology at Informa Tech, discusses these advancements with Peter Illingworth, the medical director involved in developing the AI system at Australia-based Virtus. Dr Illingworth discusses how Virtus’ AI can filter through hours of video imagery of cell growth and correctly analyse patterns of success naked to even the trained human eye. This technology supports embryologists in the laboratory, boosting transferal success rates from 60-70% up to an averaged 93%, saving patients money and the psychological effects that come with IVF risks. This enables them to make more informed decisions about which embryos to transfer, and ultimately improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.
