| 2/9/25 | ![]() The Gaza Ceasefire Part 2: Trump and Israel's plans | After nearly 16 months of genocide, Palestinians saw a long-awaited respite when a ceasefire was announced in mid-January. But while the bombs have stopped raining down on Gaza—for now—Israel's attacks on Palestinians across occupied lands continue. With only 42 days of ceasefire guaranteed, Israeli politicians are already plotting their return to war while escalating settler and state violence in the West Bank. This is the second episode in a three-part series in collaboration with Mondoweiss and Al-Shabaka, the Palestine Policy Network, where we explore what happens next and what the future of Palestine looks like. We'll dive into Hamas's vision for the "day after" in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority's struggle for power and legitimacy, and what Israel stands to gain—or lose—in the process. In this episode, we turn to Washington, where, in the third week of a fragile ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister—and wanted war criminal—Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. As Israeli officials were preparing for ceasefire negotiations in Qatar, Trump and Netanyahu sent an entirely different message: Trump declared that the U.S. would "own Gaza" and turn it into the Riviera of the Middle East—a statement widely condemned as a call for ethnic cleansing. To unpack these statements, their deeper implications, and what they reveal about the future of Gaza, we're joined by Palestinian human rights lawyer, analyst, and Al-Shabaka policy member, Diana Buttu. | 10/11/24 | ![]() One Year of Genocide: Diana Buttu on Israel's Brutality and the Fight for Justice | Today's episode was recorded just before the one-year anniversary of October 7th, the date marking the beginning of the most recent iteration of Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza. Unfortunately, we missed the release date, but we still felt it was crucial to share this conversation as events continue to unfold. Since the recording, Israel has not only continued its brutal assault on Gaza but has also intensified its aggression in Lebanon, with hundreds killed and over a million people displaced as Israel prepares for a ground invasion. In this episode, I speak with Diana Buttu, who offers a powerful analysis of Israel's colonial expansionist project, its use of propaganda, and its deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians. Buttu also discusses the international community's inaction, particularly the U.S.'s role in enabling Israel's violence, and reflects on the sense of isolation and hopelessness felt by many Palestinians. She provides a deep dive into the internal dynamics of Israeli society, which supports and justifies these actions while offering little accountability for atrocities committed. Despite the devastating realities, Diana shares her thoughts on the importance of global solidarity and the hope for justice in the future. | 10/4/24 | ![]() Israel and Iran: Unpacking Western Media Bias | In the past few weeks, Israel has bombed Lebanon, assassinated Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, launched a ground invasion, and displaced over a million people. Health care workers are warning of an 'apocalyptic' situation, with many now sleeping on the streets of Beirut. More than 1,300 have been killed, including at least one Lebanese American citizen. Meanwhile, Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza and carry out military invasions in the occupied West Bank. On Tuesday, Iran launched over 100 missiles at Israel, targeting military sites in retaliation for Israel's killings of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. We're joined by Assal Raad. Assal specializes in research and writing on Iran policy and U.S.-Iran relations. Her work has appeared in Newsweek, The National Interest, The Independent, Foreign Policy, and more. She's been a commentator on BBC World, Al Jazeera, NPR, and others. | 9/27/24 | ![]() From Beirut to Gaza: The Ripple Effects of Israel's Attack on Lebanon | In just a week, Israel's brutal bombing campaign on Lebanon has killed more than 700 Lebanese people and displaced over 90,000, escalating tensions with Hezbollah and pushing the conflict closer to what some believe is already an all-out war. This comes on the heels of the recent 'pager attack,' where hundreds of personal electronic devices were booby-trapped by Israel, resulting in the deaths and injuries of thousands across the country. Today, I'm joined by Abboud Hamayel – a writer, analyst, and lecturer in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Birzeit University. We'll be discussing the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the potential implications for the region, and how these developments impact Gaza. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. | 8/1/24 | ![]() 85. Polio and The Public Health Crisis in Gaza | In mid-July, reports began to emerge from the Gaza Strip that polio was detected in the water. Days later, the Gaza Ministry of Health declared a polio epidemic and called for "immediate intervention to end the [Israeli] aggression and find radical solutions" to the worsening public health crisis in the Strip. The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was sending more than one million polio vaccines to Gaza to be administered over the coming weeks to prevent children from being infected. But whether Israel would open up the borders to allow the vaccines in remains to be seen. In this episode, host Yumna Patel speaks with Yara Asi, a Palestinian public health expert, about the consequences this latest development could have for public health in Gaza and the world, where most strains of the polio virus have effectively been eradicated. Yara M. Asi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida in the School of Global Health Management and Informatics and Co-Director of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights. Her work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals, The New York Times, The Nation, The Washington Post, and other outlets. | 7/24/24 | ![]() 82. ICJ says Israel's occupation is illegal | On July 19, the International Court of Justice, or ICJ, ruled that Israel's occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem is illegal and must end immediately. Palestinians, of course, have been saying this for years. The court stated that Israel must halt all new settlement construction, evacuate settlers, and pay reparations to Palestinians, calling some of Israel's policies "apartheid." This advisory opinion, requested by the United Nations, marks a significant condemnation of Israel's legal defenses. The ruling emphasizes the occupation's illegality and highlights the need for international accountability and policy shifts. This historic ruling, though non-binding, challenges Israel's legal defenses for the first time. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas celebrated the decision as a victory for justice, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed it calling it "absurd." The United States responded by affirming only that Israel's settlements are illegal and criticized "the breadth of the court's opinion," which, it said, "will complicate efforts to resolve the conflict." We are joined today by Craig Mokhiber, an international human rights lawyer and activist, and a former senior United Nations human rights official. Craig served at the U.N. for over three decades, with postings in Switzerland, Palestine, Afghanistan, and New York, conducting numerous human rights missions across various continents. In October 2023, he left the U.N., criticizing the organization's human rights failures regarding Israel's actions to Gaza, warning of genocide in Gaza, and calling for a new approach to Palestine and Israel based on international law, human rights, and equality. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. | 7/18/24 | ![]() 81. AIPAC is spending big to beat Cori Bush | Last month, pro-Israel centrist George Latimer beat Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th district. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent $15 million to help secure Latimer's victory and now they have their sights set on Missouri's 1st district, where Rep. Cori Bush is facing a primary challenge from prosecutor Wesley Bell. Bush advocated for Palestinian rights on the campaign trail in 2020, and she's been strong on the issue as a House member, making her a consistent target of Israel lobbying groups. Progressive Congressmember Jamaal Bowman loses primary to AIPAC-backed candidate | Yesterday Jamaal Bowman, a member of the so-called Squad of progressive politicians in the U.S. House of Representatives, lost his hotly contested primary election in New York's 16th District. This primary race between him and George Latimer broke records as the most expensive primary race for the House of Representatives in U.S. history. Political action committees affiliated with AIPAC, the American Israel Political Affairs Committee, poured over $15 million dollars into the race to boost Latimer's campaign. AIPAC and its affiliated groups pledged to spend $100 million during the 2024 election cycle to promote pro-Israel candidates. Progressive organizations launch Reject AIPAC to counter the pro-Israel lobby | AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is on its way to spending over $100 million this election cycle as it looks to punish candidates critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. Earlier this year a coalition of nearly two dozen progressive groups – including Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and the Sunrise Movement – launched Reject AIPAC, an organization aimed at combatting the pro-Israel lobbying group. Mondoweiss's U.S. correspondent Michael Arria interviewed Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi about the coalition, AIPAC's election strategy, and two of the biggest primary fights of the summer. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics.
