| 6/5/26 | ![]() Episode 89 - Stuck in the MIddle with Xander (Triangle) | This week on The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 11: “Triangle.” Giles leaves the Magic Box in Anya’s very enthusiastic hands, Willow gets a little too casual with the merchandise, and Xander finds himself trapped between his girlfriend and his best friend as their bickering accidentally unleashes a giant troll with a hammer, an appetite for babies, and a complicated romantic history. Meanwhile, Buffy is still dealing with Riley’s departure, Spike is rehearsing the expression of his feelings with a very unfortunate mannequin, and Joyce is recovering at home while everyone tries very hard not to hover. Sean and Melanie also talk love triangles, troll dolls, the Norway Pavilion at Epcot, Buffy’s post-breakup growth, Anya being completely right about inventory, Willow acting wildly out of pocket, and whether Buffy the Vampire Slayer should maybe be called Buffy the Demon Slayer at this point. We also to on the upcoming Hellmouth Con, a Buffy fan encounter in the wild, the return of Amy the rat, and The Bronze’s questionable crowd reactions. While getting ready to publish this episode, we learned the unfortunate news of Anthony Steward Head's passing. His family is in our thoughts. We'll discuss his role in Buffy and the impact Rupert Giles had in the future. | 59m 59s | ||||||
| 5/25/26 | ![]() Episode 88 - The Wig MacGuffin (Into the Woods) | This week on The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie head Into the Woods for one of Season 5’s heavier, less laugh-filled episodes. Joyce is finally out of surgery, Buffy and Riley’s relationship reaches its breaking point, Spike continues lurking in deeply unsettling fashion, and Xander somehow becomes the voice of mature relationship clarity. Who saw that coming? Before diving into Riley’s vampire-suck-house spiral and Buffy’s emotional walls, Sean and Melanie kick things off with a very important discussion inspired by Anya’s strawberry schnapps suggestion: underage drinking stories, questionable liqueurs, wine coolers, Long Island iced teas, Watermelon Pucker, 99 Bananas, and the alcohols they can never touch again. Melanie questions the purpose of Joyce’s tumor arc, Sean complains about the unnecessary Buffy/Riley sex montage , and everyone says goodbye (or maybe good riddance?) to Riley Finn. Plus, Melanie makes her prediction for the next episode, “Triangle,” and somehow summons an opera-singing demon in a Viking helmet. Join us for heartbreak, helicopter exits, snack houses, and a surprising amount of chicken feet. | 54m 19s | ||||||
| 4/27/26 | ![]() Episode 87 - The Crithering (Listening to Fear) | This week on The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie are talking Listening to Fear...that title is still confusing. Between questionable science (“protein alkaloid” sure, Riley), a nightmare fuel space demon, and one of the most emotional Joyce episodes yet, this episode contains a weird mix of chaos and real-life depth. We get into how fear shows up in our own lives, from imposter syndrome to doing scary things on purpose, and whether fear is actually helpful or just really annoying. Also: Buffy Summers deserves a break. That’s it. That’s the takeaway. | 50m 10s | ||||||
| 4/13/26 | ![]() Episode 86 - Rubber Snakes and Cat Pics (Shadow) | Buffy is used to saving the world, but what happens when she can’t fix what’s happening at home? In Season 5, Episode 8: “Shadow”, things get very real as Joyce’s health takes a serious turn, forcing Buffy to step into a role she’s not ready for: caregiver and decision-maker. On top of still being the Slayer. This week, we dive into one of the most grounded and emotional storylines of the series so far, exploring what it means to “grow up” when life doesn’t give you a choice. We talk about the pressure Buffy is under, the cracks forming in her relationship with Riley, and how the show balances real-world fear with supernatural chaos (including a very questionable snake situation). Plus: Melanie reacts to Glory officially being named Sean explains the difference between a CAT scan and a CT scan And we share our own experiences with being forced to grow up too fast This is a tough one, but with just enough classic Sunnydale weirdness to remind you this is still Buffy. | 56m 10s | ||||||
| 4/9/26 | ![]() Bonus Episode - Scooby Snacks - Lukewarm SpaghettiOs | In this special Scooby Snacks edition of The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie head straight to Xander’s basement to revisit one of Buffy’s most questionable food moments: lukewarm SpaghettiOs from 'The Replacement.' We’re putting our childhood nostalgia to the test with a full-on tasting of canned pasta products, sampling SpaghettiOs, Beefaroni and, beef ravioli. Do they still hit the same? Or are some things better left in the 20th century We also discuss: Which canned pasta reigns supreme (and which one absolutely does not) Whether meatballs made with chicken AND beef should even exist How much of what we loved as kids actually holds up today And because we’re a little extra (okay, a lot extra), Sean brings a homemade version into the mix, complete with real ingredients and actual flavor, to see how it stacks up against the classics. Let’s just say not all SpaghettiOs are created equal. Grab a spork and join us for a nostalgic (and slightly horrifying) trip down memory lane. SpaghettiOs and Meatballs Recipe from Skinnytaste Decosmo's Italian Market | 12m 54s | ||||||
| 3/23/26 | ![]() Episode 85 - Spike, Slow-Mo Shots, and Subways (Fool for Love) | In this episode of The Sunnydale Diaries, we dive deep into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 7: “Fool for Love.” Melanie’s prediction (surprisingly close) leads us into a deep dive on Spike’s past. from awkward, poetry-writing William to leather-clad vampire with a Slayer body count. Along the way, we explore really separates Buffy from the Slayers who came before her, and why Spike might understand her better than anyone else. We talk: Spike’s origin story (and that bloody awful poetry) The psychology of Slayers, and whether they all have a death wish That iconic slow-motion walk (you know the one) Subway fights, the Boxer Rebellions, Crispy chips And the moment that might just change everything between Buffy and Spike Plus, we react to some major Buffy news, share updates about Hellmouth Con, and, because this show loves emotional damage, start to realize something might be very wrong with Joyce. Is Spike just obsessed, or is something deeper starting to surface? | 52m 31s | ||||||
| 3/13/26 | ![]() Episode 84 - Brooms, Balls, and Sweetbreads (Family) | In this episode of The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie dive into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 6 “Family.” Melanie’s prediction about the episode being centered on chosen family turns out to be very on point, as the Scooby Gang learns more about Tara’s past when her family unexpectedly arrives in Sunnydale. As Tara struggles with feelings of not belonging, the group is forced to confront what it really means to be family, and who gets to define it. Along the way, Sean and Melanie discuss: The complicated dynamics of blood family vs. chosen family Tara’s heartbreaking backstory and why she feels like an outsider among the Scoobies Buffy becoming increasingly protective of Dawn after learning the truth about the Key Riley and Buffy’s ongoing relationship tension Spike’s growing obsession with Buffy And the questionable demon design choices of the episode The conversation also turns personal as Sean and Melanie share their own experiences with family drama, estrangement, and the people in their lives who have become family by choice rather than blood. Join us as we break down one of the most emotional episodes of Season 5 and celebrate the moment the Scooby Gang proves that family isn’t just who you’re born to—it’s who stands with you when it matters most. Whether you're a longtime Buffy fan or watching the series for the first time along with Melanie, grab a seat at the Magic Box and join us for another trip through Sunnydale. | 56m 28s | ||||||
| 2/23/26 | ![]() Episode 83 - Magic Sand and Evil Tea (No Place Like Home) | This week on The Sunnydale Diaries, we’re covering Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 5: “No Place Like Home.” And wow — this one changes everything. From running monks and mysterious rituals to the official grand opening of the Magic Box, this episode somehow balances chaos, comedy, and one of the biggest revelations of the entire series. We discuss: Dawn: pest, mystery, or something much bigger? Buffy immediately assuming Joyce’s illness is supernatural (fair or full reach?) The Key — what it is, who wants it, and why monks are sprinting through factories to protect it Claire Kramer’s unforgettable entrance (and Sean's confusion about her role in Bring it On. Riley’s ongoing crisis of purpose Anya thriving in retail And that final reveal Season 5 officially shifts gears here. The emotional stakes rise, the mythology expands, and Melanie reacts to one of the most iconic twists in Buffy history. There’s no place like home…until you find out home isn’t what you thought it was. | 52m 49s | ||||||
| 2/9/26 | ![]() Episode 82 - Lavender Daphne and the Eye Gesture (Out of My Mind) | In this week’s episode of The Sunnydale Diaries, we dive into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 4: “Out of My Mind", an episode packed with insecurity, power struggles, and what happens when love starts to feel like a competition. As Buffy juggles slaying, school, and a boyfriend who desperately wants to prove he can “keep up,” Riley’s unraveling takes center stage, raising big questions about masculinity, vulnerability, and why asking for help can feel like failure. Meanwhile, Spike teams up with Harmony (badly), Dawn continues being…Dawn, and Joyce has a scary experience that sends her to the ER. Because this episode drops during Valentine’s week, we take a detour into our own relationship stories: sweet, awkward, dramatic, and occasionally mortifying. From early relationship grand gestures to being aggressively friend-zoned, middle-school Valentine pressure, and one truly chaotic bouquet of roses, we unpack how love, insecurity, and timing collide both in Sunnydale and real life. It’s an episode about feeling “less than,” trying too hard, and learning that strength doesn’t always look the way you expect. Also: Dawson’s Creek, fancy stakes, lavender outfits, and at least one masterclass in bad decision-making. Grab your heart-shaped chocolates and join us. | 57m 08s | ||||||
| 1/26/26 | ![]() Episode 81 - X1 = X2 (The Replacement) | What if someone else could step into your life… and do it better than you ever have? In this episode of The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 3, 'The Replacement,' an episode that starts as a classic body-split gag and quietly turns into one of the most heartbreaking looks at self-worth the show has ever done. As Xander is magically divided into two versions of himself, one confident, capable, and successful, the other insecure and falling apart, we talk about what it feels like to believe you’re disposable. The version of yourself that always comes up short. The fear that someone else could replace you at work, in relationships, or in life entirely…and no one would notice. Along the way, we unpack Xander and Anya’s very adult struggles with money, housing, and timelines you feel pressured to meet before life passes you by. We also talk about our first apartments, crappy rentals, terrifying deposits, and the strange pride that comes with finally making a place your own, even when you’re not sure you deserve it yet. There’s also a demon with a glowing stick, an aggressively flirty leasing agent, Spike doing Spike things, and one devastating line that perfectly captures Xander’s internal monologue: “I’m just another great humiliation.” “The Replacement” reminds us that confidence and competence aren’t separate people. They’re parts of us we don’t always know how to access. And sometimes the real fight isn’t with a demon… it’s learning to believe you’re enough as you are. | 49m 35s | ||||||

| 1/12/26 | ![]() Episode 80 - Magic Slayer Handstand (Real Me) | Buffy has a sister. She’s always had a sister. And apparently… we just never noticed. No big whoop. In this episode of The Sunnydale Diaries, Sean and Melanie dive into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 2, “Real Me,” an episode all about sibling: annoying siblings, protective siblings, and the complicated, lifelong bond that somehow survives childhood chaos. As Dawn steps into the spotlight (and immediately gets on Buffy's nerves), we unpack what it really means to be the younger sibling living in someone else’s shadow—and what it’s like to suddenly be expected to protect someone when you’re barely holding things together yourself. Along the way, Sean and Melanie share their own very real sibling stories: favoritism, slap fights, broken bones, resentment, reconciliation, and the strange way adulthood can heal what childhood broke. We also talk vampire Harmony’s glow-up as a Big Bad (kind of), Giles’s suspiciously fancy new car, Dawn’s diary angst, and follow up to our "no big whoop" conversation from last episode. From diary confessions to magic-shop murder, “Real Me” proves that sibling drama might be the most dangerous thing on the Hellmouth—and that love, irritation, and loyalty are often all tangled together. Grab your journal, hide your milk, and join us as we ask: who does get to be the favorite, anyway? | 58m 16s | ||||||
| 12/22/25 | ![]() Episode 79 - Too Much Xanding! (Buffy Vs. Dracula) | Season Five is here and The Sunnydale Diaries is officially entering one of Sean's favorite eras of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In this episode, we kick off Season 5, Episode 1: “Buffy vs. Dracula,” an episode that somehow manages to be campy, creepy, seductive, and quietly huge all at the same time. From beach days and new opening credits to castles we’ve apparently never noticed before, this premiere brings us: 🧛♂️ Dracula himself — complete with capes, bats, wolves, and mind control 🖤 Buffy confronting the darkness and power inside herself 🐞 Xander fully embracing his Renfield era (yes, with bugs) 📚 Giles questioning his purpose (and finding it again) 🧠 Mind games, seduction, and Slayer autonomy 👀 And one of the biggest “WAIT, WHAT?” cliffhangers in the entire series We talk about what Dracula represents in Buffy’s journey, how this episode reframes Slayer power after the Season 4 enjoining spell, and how a wolf got on top of the Espresso Pump. Plus: pink leather pants, castle logistics, Joyce inviting strangers inside, and whether “Cow me” should ever have been a line of dialogue. And then — that ending. No spoilers, but if you remember the first time you watched this episode, you already know why this moment permanently changes the trajectory of Season Five.
