| 4/29/26 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Diane Keaton, Meg Ryan & Lisa Kudrow - Hanging Up (2000) | Welcome back everybody to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! Apologies first of all for the audio quality of our mics today. We had some uncontrollable peaking issues that i (Don) tried to fix in post - which helped alot but our mics on this episode do sound a bit tinny - maybe its just to my ears.. but i thought i would mention it off the top! Regardless of that.. on this episode, we decided (as promised) to go back to our beloved actress and famed Woody Alumni Diane Keaton who passed away just over 6 months ago from the posting of this recording. We continue to look at her few film directing efforts.. and this was actually her last movie directing gig. With a star studded cast.. and honestly good dramatic material to bring to adapt to screen. unfortunately.. this one was panned by both critics and audiences.. and this turned out to be an.. interesting experience we just have to be brutally honest about.. It is an interesting one to say very least - Diane Keaton.. you are still.. and will ALWAYS be missed. Thanks for listening as always, if you find time - please like, share and review the show on whatever platform you access this podcast from. ================================================================ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out: 📌 Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_Up 📌 IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162983/ 📌 Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hanging_up ================================================================= A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info - check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always! | 3/28/26 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Bill Murray, Richard Dreyfuss & Frank Oz - What About Bob (1991) | Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent, right here on the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast. This time around, we kick things off with a bit of Oscar 2026 talk - because, of course, we couldn’t resist. Our good old boy Timmy C finds himself in a little bit of trouble, which we have some fun unpacking before getting into the main feature... For this month’s Adjacent pick, James brings us a very special one: the 1991 comedy What About Bob? starring Bill Murray - an actor we wished had crossed paths with Woody Allen on screen. Admittedly, in the editing process for this episode, i (Don) wondered if we might’ve leaned into the nitpicking just a little bit too much :P … but honestly, that’s part of the fun of doing a movie podcast no? All in all, it’s a lively episode, and a good one to revisit or discover for the first time! Next month, we’ve got a special follow up - something we promised last year for a beloved actor Thanks as always for listening and supporting the show - we know y'all are just as excited as we are to tackle Woodys filmography again - remember, that starts this October 2026! ================================================================ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out: 📌 Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_About_Bob%3F 📌 IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103241/ 📌 Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/what_about_bob ================================================================ Hats Off Ent. | 2/26/26 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King & Ruby Cruz -The Threesome (2025) | Welcome back everybody, to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of ADJACENT! Today’s episode came together in a really interesting way. It was sparked by an email we received from one of our listeners nearly a year ago... An email Donald has actually been holding onto for quite some time, waiting for the right film to land in his lap so we could properly unpack it... That moment has now arrived! This week, we’re diving into a movie that opens up a broader conversation - not just about the film itself, but about this particular sub-genre, that being.. the way pregnancy is handled as a devloping narrative on TV and Film and sometimes.. when researching an episode, we stumble across some wild real-life events that later became movies in their own right - Yup.. its all related and brings things full circle Thank you as always for listening - a special thank you to all of our patrons and community supporters. ================================================================ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out: 📌 Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Threesome 📌 IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21187592/?ref_=ttnw_ov_i 📌 Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_threesome ================================================================ The Pregnancy Pact News Story: Pact - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fvcJ0cnCV8&pp=ygUXdGhlIHByZWduYW5jeSBwYWN0IG5ld3M%3D ================================================================= A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info - check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always! | 11/24/25 | ![]() Not Woody Actually 06: Diane Keaton - The World Without Annie Hall - A Tribute | In this special episode, Don and James take a heartfelt pause to honour the life and legacy of the incomparable legend that is… was… Diane Keaton (1946–2025). This outstanding actress, creative force, and undeniable muse to Woody Allen was one of the most charming and lovable souls ever to grace the world of acting - let alone walk the halls of Hollywood with her unmistakable wit, presence, style and charisma. Her passing was truly shocking and deeply sad… and even though a few weeks have now gone by, we still feel the void left by her absence. It was fascinating revisiting all the projects Diane created outside of her work with Woody.. and in this episode, our trusty AI Assistant also jumps in to deliver a thoughtful tribute, spotlighting her lesser-known pursuits as a photographer, director, author, and style icon. Honestly, we could have spoken about her for hours… but we tried to keep this episode concise, knowing we’ll certainly be returning for future Diane-focused discussions. Stay tuned for that! For now, we simply say: Rest in peace, Diane Keaton. You will be sorely missed. | 10/27/25 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Zach Braff, Evelyne Brochu & Vanessa Hudgens — French Girl (2024) | We begin this episode by acknowledging the passing of a truly incredible actress — one who played a pivotal role in the life and legacy of Woody Allen, among many others in Hollywood and beyond. Diane Keaton (1946–2025) will be deeply missed. She passed away the very next day after we recorded this episode, and I (Don) actually found out during the editing phase. Soon after, James and I spoke about it briefly, and we’ll be dedicating a few special episodes to Diane — the next one after this, for sure. Until then, we send our warmest thoughts to the Keaton family as we remember and celebrate a wholly original, endlessly inspiring woman — an actress, mother, friend, and creative spirit unlike any other. ______________________________________________________ On this episode of Woody Adjacent, we’re taking on another Reddit request — and likely the last for a while since we’ve got a long list of adjacent films ahead! French Girl (2024), starring Zach Braff, Evelyne Brochu, and Vanessa Hudgens, directed by James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright is our focus today. It’s a film that’s divided audiences but also carved out an interesting little niche fanbase... it certainly gave us plenty to talk about! James and I dig into whether it’s a modern Meet the Parents, a Canadian Two Days in Paris, or something else entirely — and how its blend of sincerity and slapstick comedy tries to makes a case that love really is the most confusing language of all. Was this case made for the film.... well... let's discuss! | 9/26/25 | ![]() Woody Adjacent – Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal & Chris Evans – Materialists (2025) | We’re back again — fresh off our little Not Woody Actually detour — with another thoughtful instillment of Woody Allen Adjacent! This time, Donald and James turn their attention to Celine Song’s The Materialists. Marketed like a conventional romantic comedy, the film instead plays out as a melancholic character study about love, ambition, and the ways relationships risk becoming transactional rather than organic. It’s a distinctly modern take on dating and connection — one that’s clearly split audiences, even as the critics seem to adore this one. (Critics vs. audiences… go figure. :P) We ended up pretty mixed ourselves, but between the strong craft, the solid performances, and the themes at play, The Materialists made for another fascinating Woody Adjacent discussion.! | 7/30/25 | ![]() Not Woody Actually #04: A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham *Book Discussion* | Welcome back to another episode of Not Woody Actually — where we go somewhat off the rails and discuss things even more loosely related to Woody Allen than our Adjacent series. In this episode, Don takes a solo deep-dive into a long-overdue topic: Patrick McGilligan’s 2025 biography of Woody Allen, A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham. This is no light read — we’re talking 848 pages or 34 hours on Audible of dense, detailed Woody Allen history. But it might just be the most comprehensive biography of Allen ever written not by the man himself. Don lightly unpacks the book’s tone, structure, strengths, and shortcomings — and shares a few surprising insights along the way. With help from our trusty AI Assistant, we introduce the author, explore the book’s critical reception, and — as a bonus — Don reveals how reading Sham led him to a rare, long-forgotten Woody Allen biography… which in turn became a side project that true fans will definitely appreciate. We also want to apologize to those of you who’ve been waiting a while for this discussion. As mentioned in the intro, James and Don have been deep in conversation about the podcast’s future — and that made this the perfect moment to release this solo recording instead of another Adjacent episode. We hope you enjoy this shorter-than-usual but long-awaited episode — and if you’ve read Sham or have thoughts of your own, we’d love to hear from you. In this episode, Don and James tackle Stranger Than Fiction (2006), a film that finds Will Ferrell dialing things down and getting existential. None of the usual Ferrell cowbells, screaming or streaking here. Just wristwatches, looming death, and tasty baked goods ahead. Expect a few Woody comparisons from our witty assistant, some literary musing, and hopefully more laughs than Harold Crick gets in a week. | 4/21/25 | ![]() April 2025 Update: What's with Baum - An Upcoming Woody Novel???? | We are sorry to say there will be no podcast episode for this month April 2025! While we, Don and James are out of town this month, we didn’t want to leave you completely hanging - so here’s a short update episode to keep things warm until we return next month in May. In this bite-sized instillment, we discuss the curious and quietly revealed news of Woody Allen’s first-ever novel, What’s with Baum?, slated for release on September 23, 2025, and published by Post Hill Press. The book centers on Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish journalist wrestling with anxiety, a fading career, and tangled family dynamics — a premise that feels like classic Woody territory. We do wonder if this is a pivot away from filmmaking moving forward as allen slows down on the movie releases, honestly we are seriously wondering if is this book release even real.. or have WE BEEN DUPED BY Ai? :P Well... as we all try to figure this out, you will of course, find the Amazon link to the book page below. | 1/31/25 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Diahann Carroll, James Earl Jones & John Berry - Claudine (1974) | Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent—the first one of 2025! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don’t know, in Woody Allen Adjacent, our podcast hosts work their way through films they like to compare and contrast with Woody Allen’s filmography and/or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate a wider list of interesting Adjacent movies—some of which may feel a little ‘out of the norm,’ so to speak. As we rotate our turns for Adjacent every month, we’re slowly working our way through a fascinating list of films. We’ve already covered quite a few at this point, some obvious, some not so. For the AI’s turn this month, it has chosen Claudine (1974), a touching romantic dramedy starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Set in Harlem, Claudine offers a heartfelt yet sharp critique of the welfare system, family dynamics, and love in a time of financial struggle. While it arrived during the height of the Blaxploitation era, Claudine took a more grounded and human approach, telling a personal and deeply affecting story. Incidentally, Claudine has a loose connection to Woody Allen via James Earl Jones, who later starred in The Comedians (1974), a film featuring Richard Burton, who worked with Woody Allen in Stardust Memories (1980)—a bit of trivia for those who like to make those six degrees of separation-style links! So, join us for this deep dive into a film that may not be an obvious Woody Adjacent pick but certainly deserves its place in the discussion. - Links Mentioned in This Episode - THE MANIC EXPRESSION MOVIE TEASER TRAILER - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Dl4-FDzq8 Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings, and any additional information you may find interesting: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_(film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071334/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/claudine A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info—check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always! | 12/25/24 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson & Spike Jonze - HER (2013) | Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent - the last one of 2024, in fact! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don’t know, in Woody Allen Adjacent our podcast hosts work they way thought films they like to compare and contrast to Woody Allens filmography and or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate an additional wider list of interesting Adjacent movies some maybe we may find 'out of the norm' so to speak. As we rotate our turns for adjacent every month we’re slowly working our way through a very interesting list of films. We’ve already done more than a bunch at this point in time, some obvious, some not so. Fittingly, for the Ai’s turn this month, it has chosen Spike Jonze’s film - Her (2013) - a well celebrated, Oscar winning, romantic drama, where Artificial Intelligence is at the core of the love story. In this timely episode James and Donald dive into Her, exploring its poignant themes of love, loneliness, and technology in a near futuristic world that actually feels more relevant than ever. We have standout performances by Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and taking a look back now, we find a surprisingly well star studded supporting cast Incidentally, the main leads here, do have ties to Woody Allen (Match Point, Irrational Man) and as a extra tid-bit of trivia, some people may not know, the original Ai voice that was replaced - Samantha Morton - is another Woody Allen alumni (Sweet and Lowdown) With Joaquin Phoenix already in the spotlight earlier this year due to the Joker 2 box office disaster, we took 5 or so minutes to talk about that situation :P Reality can be just as intriguing as fiction as this movie is drawing parallels to the ever-growing influence of advanced AI platforms like Character AI, in fact we even highlight a riveting mini YouTube documentary that showcases just how close we’ve come to living out the reality of Her: The Rise and Fall of Character Ai So lets wrap up this year with this thoughtful discussion blending cinema, technology, and humanity, as we consider whether Her is still science fiction - or if we’re already living it. | 11/29/24 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Tom O'Brien, Katherine Waterston & Caitlin FitzGerald - Manhattan Romance (2014) | Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! On this adjacent episode we take a reddit recommendation for a movie that looks and sounds very much like films Woody has made in the past.. in fact, this may very well be a 'homage' to such Woody Allen movies: Manhattan and or Annie Hall! However... upon watching.. it became clear to us this might just be one of the most disappointing, perplexing and just poor adjacent type films we have ever seen, putting adjacent aside, its generally a terrible film in the genre of romantic comedies We are by no means film experts but as fans of the genre that have seen and discussed MANY films of this ilk, its quite astounding to see just how bad this one was to watch. We don't believe we have been this critical since our very first adjacent discussion on Lous CK's 'I Love You Daddy' Let us give praise where it is due thought - props to Scott Miller who was Director of Photography, the visual presentation is actually decent.... | 10/25/24 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Taissa Farmiga, Malin Åkerman & Todd Strauss-Schulson - The Final Girls (2015) | Welcome back to another SPOOKY edition of the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast Last time, our favourite cohost with the Most: James, suggested that he would bring up a movie in the horror genre. A genre Woody Allen never quite made a feature film in Hence James thought he would bring up an interesting title we imagine woody may have done in an alternate universe.. ALSO, our Ai assistant conjurers up a complete original(ish) horror movie idea, laid up with a full cast and plot This was definfitely a fun experimental discussion, and the movie in question is a damn good horror comedy in its own right, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT In fact, lets see if we can leave some links below on how you may find it.... https://www.justwatch.com/uk/movie/the-final-girls Thanks as always for listening - leave a comment below if you have a similar type suggestion, or just interact with us - we would love and appreciate your engagement! | 9/26/24 | ![]() Not Woody Actually #03: Brothers McMullen Living Out Loud | A warm welcome back to all our lovely podcast listeners We are back after we were unable to record last month, this was due to some personal stuff on Don's part. So as you can see from the title this is going to be a NOT WOODY ACTUALLY episode As always with NWA we talk a bit outside the norm, giving updates on the podcast Monetization situation, other minor updates.. and then for the main event we have a double adjacent-ish discussion on 2 movies. The first being a patreon request from a while ago.. and the second is a movie Don is somewhat fond of.. he just feels that movie may have been a half baked basis for a Woody Adjacent discussion. On the next episode James is doing something different with a horror themed movie he feels Woody Allen could have created (in a parallel universe?) You Know what... lets throw the question out to YOU are lovely listeners... what horror movies have you seen in your movie adventures you feel Woody Allen may have tackled, whether conceptually or loosely... again, see it as an alternate universe question.. we want to hear your thoughts on this specifically - leave your thoughts here > https://bit.ly/warpcom Thanks for listening as always, please check out our associated links below as always! ____________________________________________________- Cool Woody Allen interview from 1979 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIfwVXk_CKI&t=3s Coup De Chance is currently Streaming for Free on Tubi (As of 20/09/2024) https://tubitv.com/movies/100026984/coup-de-chance Upcoming Woody Allen Book By Famous Biographer - Woody Allen: Life and Legacy: A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham By Patrick McGilligan https://www.harpercollins.com/products/woody-allen-life-and-legacy-patrick-mcgilligan?variant=41526421979170 ____________________________________ The Brothers McMullen Links Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brothers_McMullen IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112585/ Living Out Loud Links Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Out_Loud IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120722/ _________________________________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro | 1h 29m 00s | ||||||

Soo much is happening in the world of related entertainment and politics it seems we just had to address a portion of it as it relates to certain aspects of our podcast So... starting with Alec Baldwins RUST court case which has now come to a sudden and eventful close. | 6/28/24 | ![]() Woody Adjacent - Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae & Sterling K. Brown – American Fiction (2023) | Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! On this episode our co-host with the most James has chosen to discuss a very recent Oscar winning movie based off a somewhat popular novel from the early 2000’s. It was a great conversation to have even given the somewhat uncomfortable realities the movie satirizes and asks us as the viewer to confront It’s actually quite refreshing to see the extremely positive reception to this movie and we definitely ponder how its implications relate to Woody Allen and the Hollywood industry on a whole In American Fiction (2023) Award-winning professor Monk Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) feels stifled. His acclaimed novels lack commercial success, and publishers reject his latest work for not conforming to tired racial stereotypes. Fed up, Monk hatches a plan. He anonymously writes a scathing satire under a pseudonym, "My Pafology," exploiting every cliché about Black life the industry craves. To his surprise, "My Pafology" becomes a runaway bestseller, lauded by white critics who miss the satire entirely. While Monk wrestles with guilt and frustration over his fake identity his family life also begins to further crumbles as his siblings and mother face medical instability and a new relationship becomes more difficult to navigate in line with his pseudo success.
