Thinking Outside The Long Box

For today's episode we are exploring a brand new film maker, but not new to the industry of entertaining people! Markiplier is undoubtedly one of the top performers on the Youtube platform right now, and he decided to fund his own film, Iron Lung! This is of course based off of his popular video game, of the same name. " Iron Lung (2026) is a sci-fi horror film written, directed by, and starring Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, based on the 2022 game. It follows a convict named Simon tasked with piloting a claustrophobic submarine through an ocean of blood on a desolate moon, searching for clues following a catastrophe known as the "Quiet Rapture" Now, to be frank, I will say that I believe that most of the high viewer rating comes from those fans of his who are already familiar with who he is, and what his style of performance is like. We, the hosts of the show, probably tend to side more with the critics on this one. That doesn't mean that this was somehow a failure, as I'm sure his followers spent a lot of money checking out the movie, and just by putting out a movie he accomplished something that many of us never will be, but you can definitely tell this was his first real try at the craft. As always, you should definitely go check it out and make up your own mind! Marvel is back at it with something much different from what they've been putting on TV lately. This is a much bigger departure than previous shows and it seems to be popular with the crowd! " Marvel's Wonder Man (2026) is a grounded, Hollywood-satire series under the Marvel Spotlight banner, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a struggling actor with latent, unstable ionic superpowers. The plot follows Simon’s journey to fame while navigating a film industry that prejudices against superpowered individuals, often teaming up with a returning Trevor Slattery." I do not think that this is our cup of tea because it is SO different from what we're used to, and it doesn't seem to tie into any of universe at large. For those people who don't like the current vision this might be exactly what you're looking for, but I'm not sure what everyone else will think. At the end of the day, you can watch it as a standalone! We are going pretty far back with today's pop culture classic! So far back but it's crazy to think that a new sequel actually just came out! That speaks to the staying power of this series. "The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, Rick Grimes and Michonne are reunited after years apart when Michonne finds him held captive by the Civil Republic Military (CRM). They face internal struggles and CRM threats, ultimately working together to expose the CRM's unethical and manipulative "reclamation" practices. After defeating the CRM, Rick and Michonne leave the Civic Republic and return to their children in Alexandria, finally reuniting as a family and achieving their goal of truly "living" rather than just surviving" I think we were both pleasantly surprised by how this series ended even though it probably means the end of the Rick and Michonne Era. If you didn't know who Slappy was when you were growing up, somehow you few up without Goosebumps, which is quite a shame!! RL Stine filled most of our young lives with scary, but not too scary, and goofy types of campfire stories!! The first reiteration of Goosebumps as a TV show was anthology based and was very close to the books! "Goosebumps season 1, which is a darker, more mature take on the classic horror series, tells a single, continuous story across 10 episodes. It revolves around group of high school friends who uncover a haunted house's dark secrets and their parents' connection to it, leading to the unleashing of a malevolent force upon their town. The season features elements from various R.L. Stine books, including "Night of the Living Dummy," but doesn't directly adapt their plots." It's not perfect, but I think that it blends the anthology story pretty well with it's source material, in a way that tells individual stories well and tells a bigger story at the same time! Back at it, talking about a remake of a beloved movie, Road House! Many people booed the decision to remake this movie when the announcement was made, but, while not perfect, we think that they turned out a decent film. It might not have the nostalgia of the original but there are still many things to like about this remake! "Ex-UFC fighter Dalton takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems." Not only do we talk about the film, but we have a pretty lengthy discussion about the UFC itself, as well as many other competitive sports. Like a lot of things, your hosts end up on different spectrums of the discussion but it makes for quite an interesting episode! It's time to go to 2013 with a young Charlie Hunnam, and a Guillermo Del Toro who said that he laid everything out in this film, and it was just him having fun! It's pop culture classic time, speaking about Pacific Rim! Pacific Rim, while not being the "first" American made kaiju film, was probably the first blockbuster American kaiju film that took the genre more serious, and paid a lot more tribute than others in the past. "Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind's last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot, an untested trainee and an old, obsolete Jaeger." I think, like most of the pop culture films that we revisit, while it may not be the greatest movie, it definitely deserves its respect, and a high place in kaiju history! If you're a kaiju fan, and somehow haven't taken a look back, you're doing yourself a disservice. Go watch it, and if nothing else, you'll get to see big robots, and cool monsters! Are you ready for another round of Pet Sematary? Stephen King films have been very hit and miss, and this project is probably no different. You're either going to love it, or you're going to hate it, I don't think there is an in between. "In 1969, a young Jud Crandall dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within. Jud is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow." One of us was half a fan, and the other didn't really seem to like it all that much. It has some really cool scenes, but also some things that don't make much sense. As always, you should definitely go watch it in order to decide for yourself. With most of these Stephen King projects, it's pretty polarizing. It might be time to give these films to established creators, so that we know they're in good hands. It's been a while since a new Saw movie came out, and even longer since one came out that was pretty well received and had Jigsaw as the primary character. This is a prequel in which we found out a lot about how Jigsaw became Jigsaw, and the motivations behind why. We are talking about Saw X! "Hoping for a miraculous cure, John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists." If you're a horror fan and have maybe jumped off the Saw bandwagon, I think you should definitely consider watching this entry in the series. It won't disappoint and it may actually reinvigorate. I think for the most part, we were all sad when AMC announced that The Walking Dead proper would be coming to an end! Some of those fears were assuaged when it was also announced that there would be a few spin-offs coming, but the more exciting news was who would be starring in those spin-offs. Today we are talking about the Maggie & Negan series, The Dead City! "The series follows Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan cut off from the mainland in search of Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror." It's time to go back to the year 2008 for today's pop culture classic pick! This pick came in from one of our awesome patreon supporters! We are of course talking about the cult classic film, Cloverfield! "As a group of New Yorkers (Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman) enjoy a going-away party, little do they know that they will soon face the most terrifying night of their lives. A creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive as New York crumbles around them." Cloverfield was super polarizing when it originally came out! It was controversial for how it was shot, and there were many stories of people coming out of theaters while throwing up. This of course came from the new camera angle that, though maybe not invented by the Cloverfield team, was definitely made much more popular. If somehow you've made it these sixteen years without seeing this movie, you're doing yourself a disservice, and you need to go check it out now! Today's episode is a little bit controversial. But only in the sense that it was almost universally disliked once it came out. Controversial because the graphics and CGI that were used, were WAY below what a $200 million movie should be putting out. We are of course talking about The Flash. "Worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian -- albeit not the one he's looking for." Like always, we do think that every topic we speak about, is worth watching, reading, listening to, etc. This is just one of those projects where it hurts to recommend a first watch. It's pop culture classic time!! We're going back to 2008 to talk about today's topic!! With five years under its belt, and a movie, this was definitely one of the most popular movies of the decade! We're talking about the drug filled series, Breaking Bad!! "Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, between 2008 and 2010, Breaking Bad follows Walter White, a struggling, frustrated high school chemistry teacher who transforms into a ruthless kingpin in the local methamphetamine drug trade, driven to provide for his family financially after being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer." I, personally, came to the Breaking Bad game much later than most people. The series had already concluded, and the movie had already been released. We are FAR removed from the popularity of this series, but it sucked me in none the less. While the acting and the way the series looks aren't the best, it's the storyline that really sucked me in. If somehow, you are like I was, and you haven't seen this movie, you need to make sure you find it, and binge the hell out of it!
