Feds Allocate $450M for Colorado River Conservation: Arizona, Nevada, and California Secure Funds for Water Conservation Plan The U.S. government has approved a $450 million plan to conserve water in the Colorado River, with Arizona, Nevada, and California leading the initiative. The goal is to save between 700,000 and 1 million acre-feet of water by 2028, which is equivalent to about ten years of water deliveries to Tucson. The lower basin states will contribute funds, making it a collaborative effort. The plan focuses on incentivizing big farmers with senior water rights, such as those in Yuma and Imperial Valley, to reduce water usage. Cities like Phoenix and Tucson, with junior water rights, have previously demonstrated their ability to conserve water through federal contracts and past payouts. Arizona plans to cut water usage by 300,000 acre-feet from its lowest priority users, with the potential for higher-priority users to participate. The Bureau of Reclamation is reviewing the plan and considering new rules post-2026. With hydrology forecasts looking challenging, the focus is on long-term solutions and quick fixes to avoid a water crisis. Support the show: Get a discount…
