On the second evening, the brothers split up to scout different sides of the mountain. The youngest brother drove up an old logging road to pick up the nephews and encountered a line of rocks blocking the path. After moving some aside and continuing, he found even larger rocks had been placed in his way on the return trip. While clearing them, one of the nephews pointed out what appeared to be a "hairy elk" behind a tree. It turned out to be an eight-foot-tall, hairy creature that prompted the brother to urgently load everyone into the truck and race back to camp.
