We've watched the Pilot (Part ONE) of "WKRP in Cincinnati." We've picked it apart to the extreme and we're ready to talk about it!! We meet, for the first time ever, the staff and ownership of Cincinnati radio station WKRP. The "Big Guy" (Art Carlson, station...owner?) has hired hotshot new program director Andy Travis, most recently from Santa Fe. Andy is our way in as we meet the wacky staff of the station. We are introduced to the iconic characters that make up the WKRP crew: Arthur, Herb, Les, Jennifer, Bailey, Venus and over-the-hill (?) morning man Dr. Johnny Fever. Learn the real story behind why Les is always bandaged as part of our first regular feature: "The Les Nessman Bandage Report." We expose...or, actually, cover-up...'Nipplegate.' We answer burning questions, like how exactly DO you change a radio station format? (Not like this!!) And what happens when the station is managed remotely by the GM's mother? 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. Huge thanks to Casey Piotrowski, writer of "Contest Nobody Could Win" for sharing the outline with us. Casey said they were handed out during a new writer's meeting in the fall of 1978. The "Turkeys Away" outline served as an example..."do it like this." Turns out, the 'outline' is actually a narrative description of the episode, complete with character lines and everything! When we first read through it, we thought, "this is kinda cool...you can sorta see the episode in there...". This episode, "The Impossible Dream" had been shelved by the network in the spring of 1982. Now, with a breakout hit on their hands, the network decided to play this never-before-seen episode well into the fall season...the season AFTER WKRP had been cancelled. It's Les's birthday. The passing of another year has spurred the News Beacon of the Ohio Valley to strive for more in his career. That, and his mother is in town. Les suddenly starts pulling awards off the wall and announces he's headed to New York to take Dan Rather's news-chair. Jennifer reacts to the birthday and mother-visit news with the same answer: Party Time! She plans a surprise birthday party for Les. For some reason, the guest of honor shows up way early. He's there before any of the other guests! He arrives without his mother and tells Jennifer he hates it for anyone to know about his birthday.Ms. Marlowe could not be having a worse day. Triple vodkas all around!!At the party, Les debuts his on-camera demo tape. It's beyond bad. Les realizes he's made a fool of himself and runs out. Will Les go to New York? Will we meet Les's mother?
