| 6/15/26 | ![]() Episode 132: Battles that Shaped the 20th Century | In this week’s episode and in a long overdue collaboration between Not So Quite on the Western Front and WW2 Both Sides of the Wire, four of us sit down to explore what we feel are the battles that, for one reason or another, shaped the course of the 20th century. Pre-order here: http://battleguide.co.uk/inferno Written by four historians, each bringing their own unique perspective, Inferno explores war on land, at sea, and in the air — from Mons in 1914 and the trenches of the Somme, to Stalingrad, Normandy, and the brutal final battles of the Pacific War. Across 12 in-depth chapters, we examine the battles that helped create the modern world: the experiences of those who fought them, the decisions that defined them, and the consequences that still shape our world today. Inferno is available now for pre-order in print and ebook, with an audiobook version narrated by Dan Hill. This isn’t just in a civilian capacity. As long as there have been warships, cats have served on them around the world. This is a tradition that has extended well into the modern era. At least 12 cats are known to have been present at the D-Day landings in June 1944. There were almost certainly more felines present in those critical early hours than dogs. Cats would continue to have an official presence on Royal Navy vessels until they were officially banned in 1975, and just how rigorously that ban has been enforced remains a question sometimes today. Individual ship’s cats have sometimes been the subject of articles, videos and podcasts. What’s often not covered in detail though, is why cats were so important on ships, and how ships throughout the ages managed their presence. So today, in this episode, we’re going to explore both the history and logistics of one of the most critical elements of naval history - the ship’s cat. Do you like our podcast? | 2/1/26 | ![]() Episode 113: Flamethrowers in WW1: How Effective Were They? | In 1915 the German Army introduced the world to the power of the flamethrower - but by 1916 the Allies had caught up with their own weapons. As the war continued flame stopped being a novelty and instead became a system - specialist troops, evolving equipment and developing tactics. | 1/19/26 | ![]() Episode 111: How Grenades Took Over the Trenches in WW1 | In the early months of the Great War, a hand grenade was almost an anachronism — a relic of fortress warfare associated with seventeenth-century “grenadiers” rather than modern industrial armies. And yet, by 1918, it had become one of the most important and feared weapons on the Western Front. This episode is the story of that transformation. From improvised “jam tins” and crude bombs to engineered patterns like the Mills bomb and the German Potato Masher stick grenade we’ll follow the technology, the tactics, and the hard, dangerous lessons learned in close combat.
