Featuring a complete show from Philadelphia, PA on 9/21/72, we also hear segments of 9/3/72 from Boulder, CO. One of the greatest Dick’s Picks of all time, it’s a fitting conclusion to the series and yet another showcase of the brilliance of September 1972. Disc One features the majority of Set One from 9/21/72 which includes a brilliant “Bird Song” as well a stunning take on “Loser.” A loose and vibey “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” showcases the standards heavy Set I played with exceptional verve. Disc Two straddles Set One and Two from 9/21/71 and is highlighted by an outstanding “Playing In The Band” closer before “He’s Gone>Truckin’” brings us into the second frame. An elongated 4+hr show, the staple of Disc Three is an absolutely incredible “Dark Star>Morning Dew.” Nearly 50min of stunning music, including 35+min of deep 1972 jamming, this is one of the greatest pieces of music released in the entire Dick’s Picks series. Disc Four closes out the Spectrum show before giving us a three song snapshot from Folsom Field with “He’s Gone> The Other One> Wharf Rat.” And with that, we’ve finally reached the end of the Dick’s Picks series. | 7/4/22 |  Dick’s Picks Vol. 33 — 10/9-10/76 Oakland, CA | In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band just a few weeks past the shocking brilliance of the Dick’s Picks Vol. 20 two-show set from Fall 1976, here in Oakland, CA for a pair of opening gigs for The Who from the “Day On The Green” at the Oakland Coliseum Stadium. Two completely day lit shows, we hear the band try to channel energy through surprising segues and upbeat selections, crafting one of the more BBQ appropriate Dick’s Picks of the larger series. Diss One, from 10/9, finds us in familiar territory as the Berry bookend opens the show before the greatest Grateful Dead song of all time is played and later “Jed.” The disc is highlighted by a gorgeous outro on “Looks Like Rain” and a loose & jammy “Scarlet Begonias,” just months away from its meeting point with “Fire On The Mountain.” Disc Two is highlighted by a phenomenal “Help -> Slip -> Drums -> Samson -> Slip -> Franklin’s” showcasing the brilliant suite in 1976. Disc Three, from 10/10, features some rarities before closing with a wild & gorgeous “Dancin -> Wharf Rat -> Dancin.” Disc Four features another sandwich, with Playin’ leading the way this time around: “Playin -> Drums -> The Wheel -> Space -> The Other One -> Stella -> Playin.” On the whole it’s a bit of an underwhelming volume in terms of transcendent moments, but it showcases The Dead in a more traditional 70’s classic rock setting, while giving many dreams of what “Space” would sound like at 3pm. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. Focusing on the peak of his solo career, we discuss the backstory of the future Dead & Co. lead guitarist, and try to better understand his path from pop rock to The Dead. Focusing on his 2008 LP of the December 8, 2007 show in LA, Where The Light Is, we hear his DMB side, his Blues Trio side, and his full band, Sob Rock side. Disc One highlight’s Mayer’s origins with a focus on his original hits through solo acoustic performances. “Neon” stands out as one of the best cuts of the record. In addition, we hear samples of Mayer’s Blues Trio with “Who Did You Think I Was” and “Vultures” showcasing depth to Mayer’s Blues interests. On Disc Two we hear Mayer’s performance with this larger live band. Running through some of his biggest songs from Continuum, we hear the differences between Mayer’s experimental ambitions and his more produced solo approaches. | 6/6/22 |  Dick’s Picks Vol. 32 — 08/07/82 East Troy, WI | In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we traverse to the heartland of America for a banner show from the wild Summer of 1982 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI. Featuring a hammy Bob, some heavy playing from Brent, and a lyrical albeit haggard Jerry, it’s one of the best pictures we have of what made the 80’s such a compelling and confounding time for The Dead. Disc One begins with a jamband staple, the sandwich jam, wherein “The Music Never Stopped” segues in and out of “Sugaree.” Elsewhere Jerry shines again on “Big River,” Brent beams through his Hammond on “CC Rider,” and the whole band connects on “Let It Grow.” While there are arguments to be made that aspects of other shows in the larger Summer ‘82 tour should have been included instead, getting a full First Set from The Dead showcases the highs and lows of the eras. On Disc Two we hear a very typical 80s/90s set two in the sense that “Playing In The Band” bookends a segment of “Drums/Space” and a gorgeous version of “The Wheel” emerges from the interstellar jamming. We close with a stunning take on “Morning Dew” before “One More Saturday Night” & “US Blues” takes us home. The jams are deep, the country is in turmoil, and idiots are climbing the fence. This volume hears The Dead at perhaps their most exhausted, two months shy of their hiatus, but willing to explore the outer realms of their musical ideas. Like two of the three previous ‘74 Dick’s Picks, this one works like a playlist, capturing some of the best - and some of the most questionable moments - of the mid-Atlantic run. Disc One begins with a wild 25min dive into expansive 70’s Miles jamming by way of “Playin’ In The Band” before moving into a groovy “Scarlet Begonias.” Elsewhere “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” shows off its 1974 breezy jamming. Disc Two is highlighted by a mellow “Weather Report Suite” which then moves into a jam proper that, while not as extended as the Dick’s Picks 12 version, still highlights the sense that anything could be jammed amidst the Watergate scandal. On Disc Three we hear a stunning “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo -> It Must Have Been The Roses” segue. Later, we hear “Truckin’” take over the set through a vast jamming segment that touches on “The Other One” and “Space” before moving into a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” Disc Four is in the running for the best Discs of the entire Dick’s Picks series. One of the greatest “Eyes Of The World” ever kicks us off before moving into a 38min “Playin’ In The Band -> Scarlet Begonias -> Playin’ In The Band” and then finally, “Uncle John’s Band” closes us out. Featuring a set with Bo Diddley, this volume highlights the emergence of Keith Godchaux in the band + showcases some of the best Pigpen we’ve ever heard through the Dick’s Picks series. Disc One features the majority of The Dead’s set with Bo Diddley on March 25. Showcasing their brilliance as a backing band, we hear them dip into the Blues for perhaps the last time in the 70s. Highlighted by a stunning “Jam” between Diddley and The Dead we see an alternate path for the band + their ability to linger in a variety of American styles throughout their career. The disc ends with a few one-off covers for the band + an excellent “Playin In The Band” from March 27. The final three discs encompass the entire May 28th show. Featuring a number of rarities through the Dick’s Picks series, it’s a great peek into the band during this period. On Disc Two, Pigpen shines on “Chinatown Shuffle, “Mr. Charlie,” and “Next Time You See Me.” Jerry’s vocals on “You Win Again” showcase his ability to be as much a Blues man as he is a psych master, and “Cumberland Blues” rivals the version on the Europe ‘72 release. On Disc Three we hear perhaps the greatest “Looks Like Rain” ever played, plus we hear another excellent, early cut on “Playin In The Band,” before Pigpen highlights his emotional side with “The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion).” Disc Four displays the band’s experimentation with a lengthy “The Other One,” before closing the set out with a laid back “Not Fade Away -> Going Down The Road Feelin Bad -> Not Fade Away.” It’s a great snapshot of The Dead ahead of a transformative period in their career. While May 21 shares many of the same songs with the famed Cornell set from May 8, it’s bolstered by an outstanding “Jack-A-Roe” on Disc Four as well as a top tier “Scarlet Begonias” -> “Fire On The Mountain” on Disc Five. We begin our final season before the vault closes with a peek back into the world of 1973 Dead. Joining them for their midwest/west tour through the frigid US, we hear the band at the peak of their powers. Capable of transitioning from cowboy rock to show-stopping ballads to deeply psychedelic jazzy jamming, it’s one of the most complete Dick’s Picks released thus far and a fitting kick off to the season. Disc One opens features some great playing in “Loser” and “Jack Straw” before “Playing In The Band” gives us the first taste of experimental Dead of the set. Disc Two is in strong competition for the best of the set with “Dark Star” -> “Eyes Of The World” > “Mississippi Half Step” going deep. Disc Three is another classic set of some of the best Dead songs ever written played by one of the greatest versions of The Dead. | 7/26/21 |  Dick's Picks Vol. 27 - 12/16/92, Oakland, CA | In this week’s episode, our Season 3 Finale, we wrap things up in December 1992 in Oakland, CA, with a show from the larger returning run following Jerry’s health crisis during the summer/fall. Featuring a unique setlist filled with songs of every era, the lone Vince solo show of the series, and perhaps the most bizarre song pairing in Dick’s Picks history, it’s a wild and fitting closure to S3 of our show. Disc One opens with the song we’ve all been waiting for since the series began: “Feel Like A Stranger.” While we don’t get the Brent growl throughout, we get the silky silky reprise all the same, and it leads to a larger conversation within the show. Elsewhere we hear an updated take on “The Main Thing,” where Bob’s “De Men’s” line clashes heavily with the barroom swirl of Pigpen. “Loose Lucy” makes its DP debut in a sultry groove before a fantastic “Let It Grow” closes it out. In Disc Two we hear some of the 90’s jamming applied to “Shakedown Street” before Bob’s grunge inspired guitar tones take over “Ship Of Fools.” More 90’s jamming invades “Playing” which moves into an inspired “Drums -> Space.” Finally, in Disc Three, we get a rare 90’s “Dark Star” alongside the groove of “Throwing Stones” from 12/17. The volume ends with the most bizarre pairing of songs in DP history with “Baba O’Rielly -> Tomorrow Never Knows.” Vince takes the lead here and the band somehow stumbles through the Boomer Anthem pairing. | 7/12/21 |  Dick's Picks Vol. 26 - 04/26-27/69, Chicago, IL & Minneapolis, MN | In this week’s episode we hop back to 1969 to hear two shows from the spring that showcase The Grateful Dead in significant transition. We hear two Midwestern shows: April 26, 1969 from Chicago, IL and April 27, 1969 from Minneapolis, MN. Hearing the band shift between the summer of love English Folk of their late-60’s output to Pigpen bar blues to the Live Dead inspired suite from Minneapolis, is a revealing insight into who The Dead were & who they could’ve become. Disc One opens with a string of songs the band would essentially leave in the 60’s, highlighting the Garcia/Hunter penchant for pastoral lyrics & fitting 3-4 songs together into one. The highlight is undeniably the “Mountains Of The Moon” which fades into a “Dark Star” jam. The disc ends with a stunning jam from 4/27 out of “Turn On Your Lovelight -> Me & My Uncle” which showcases the looseness the band could play with during this period. Disc Two continues on 4/27 with a suite based around “Dark Star” that essentially mimics the Live Dead release, showcasing a similar selection of songs through different passages of improvisation. On the whole, the set proves to be a controversial one for Rob & Steve as the two find numerous disagreements with Disc One, as well as with the place The Dead find themselves in early 1969. | 6/28/21 |  Dick's Picks Vol. 25 - 05/10-11/78, New Haven, CT & Springfield, MA | In this week’s episode we celebrate 25 volumes of the Dick’s Picks series. A monumental moment in the series, as it showcased the viability of a single band releasing a trove from their archives over a significant period in time. We’re treated to two Spring 1978 shows from the NE, May 10, 1978 from New Haven, CT and May 11, 1978 from Springfield, MA. Two archetypal Spring ‘78 shows, we hear the band engage in tight interplay around fairly standard setlists, while showcasing some of the best parts of their 77/78 period, while also pointing the way towards the future of the band in the 1980s. Disc One features quality song selection with an excellent “Jack Straw” opener, a sultry “They Love Each Other,” and a gorgeous “Peggy-O.” A wild “Deal” showcases the interplay between Donna & Bob which would be a major theme of the overall volume. Disc Two picks up midway through Set II of 5/10 with a seedy “Estimated Prophet” before a massive “Drums” jam. The disc closes with a stunning “The Other One” into an impassioned “Wharf Rat” that showcases the power of the Garcia outro solo. Disc Three opens on 5/11 with a more laid back approach, showcasing some of the more standard Set I tunes in Dead History. The disc concludes with a very solid “Scarlet -> Fire.” Disc Four is a wild party. Rumors abound about mescaline intake, we hear one of the best “Dancing In The Streets” of all time followed by a massive “Drums -> NFA,” and concluded with a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” The volume concludes with a Double-Barry bookending a fantastic take on “Werewolves Of London.” It's a full-scale dive into Spring ‘78 Dead, seedy, tight, wild, and grooving. Just five shows removed from the Dick’s Picks one selection, we hear the band in a loose, soundchecky vibe, as they work through the kinks of their revolutionary PA, and begin to dip their toes in the wild and exploratory sounds of 1974. One of the most laid-back Dick’s Picks ever, it’s a great warts & all peek into the Dead on the cusp of one of their most experimental & challenging years. Disc One is a trot through some DP standards, here played with space and patience in a way that fits the airiness of the Wall Of Sound they were plugged into. We hear the big machine slowly turn on in a choogly “US Blues” before great takes on “Brown-Eyed Women” and “Black-Throated Wind” settle everyone in. The debut of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Cassidy” prelude a truly 1974 take on “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Ride” before a gorgeous “Weather Report Suite” closes out the set. Disc Two is anchored by an emotive, 45min palindrome segment which reads: “Playing In The Band -> Uncle John’s Band -> Morning Dew -> Uncle John’s Band -> Playing In The Pand.” The raw power of the band in 1974 is heard clearly here, while their sectional jamming of Fall 1973 is on full display as well. The set ends with some standard takes on out of place tunes, while “Wharf Rat” serves as the emotional climax we all needed during the set. | 5/31/21 |  Dick's Picks Vol. 23 - 09/17/72, Baltimore, MD | In this week’s episode we return to the Dick’s Picks cannon for our second of three shows in the set from the hallowed month of September 1972. Just ten days prior to the Dick’s Picks Vol. 11 show from 9/27/72 in Jersey City, NJ, we hear the band play a similar setlist while highlighting a different centerpiece jam. It’s a classic example of The Grateful Dead in a peak month, which showcases the best of the band while highlighting the subtle differences between the band at their best. Disc One is a standard ride through ‘72 dead with staples like “Sugaree,” “Black-Throated Wind,” and “Tennessee Jed” scattered throughout, all played standard-great. The peak of the disc is found in “Bird Song,” that, while it doesn’t reach its heights of the DP11 or (coming soon) DP36 versions, is still quite blissful. One Disc Two we’re treated to a 20min exploration of “Playing In The Band” before excellent takes off “Truckin’” and “Loser” kick off Set II. Disc Three is highlighted by a monster “He’s Gone -> The Other One.” The former caps off at 39 min, it’s the longest jam in the entire DP Set and showcases a band on a musical high, shifting gears, embracing risk, weaving in and out of ideas, and displaying their overall penchant for exploration during this period. Like so much of September 1972, we hear two versions of The Dead. One is still breaking out of its shell, reveling in the post-European Tour bliss, moving forward as the unit we’d know through the 70s. The other is already looking ahead to the acid jazz explorations that would define their best experimentations until their hiatus in 1974. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media.
