All Things Cardio-Oncology

The Global Cardio-Oncology Summit is the flagship annual meeting for anyone interested in this field. This year's meeting will be hosted by the team from Virginia Commonwealth University's Pauley Heart Center. Drs. Dr. James Wilson is a consultant clinical oncologist in the UK who specializes in lung and skin cancers. He works at several London hospitals, including the London Clinic, The Cromwell Hospital, and Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC), and also has an NHS base at University College London Hospital (UCLH). His expertise includes treatments like advanced radiotherapy (such as SABR and CyberKnife), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, and he is involved in research and clinical trials.

Dr. Novi Tham, President of IC-OS Indonesia inspires us with her account of establishing the first cardio-oncology clinic in her country. She currently serves as cardio-oncology director at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village.

Taryn Cox was diagnosed with breast cancer while living in remote parts of southern Africa. Her story of tenacity and courage to get proper care is an inspiration for all of us.

We caoght up with IC-OS Poland President Sebastian Szmit at the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) meeting for a quick update on cardio-oncology developments in Poland.

Amy's treatment was nearly suspended due to cardiovascular complications. Cardio-Oncology intervened allowing her to continue life saving therapy. You don't want to miss her story. Amy explains of herself, "Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, I’m a proud graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a degree in Elementary Education and hold a Master’s from Northwest Missouri State. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 33 years, and we have four amazing kids—two grown and married, plus a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old who keep us on our toes. I’m starting my 27th year of teaching and currently teach 3rd grade in Liberty, Missouri."

Samantha Siegel, MD is an internal medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente. She explains, "I began my primary care practice with a thorough understanding of advanced disease processes that often result in hospitalization and the type of care people need when they transition back home. Then, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and underwent over two years of intensive cancer treatment, including an autologous bone marrow transplant. This led me to study integrative medicine and to focus my practice on the evolving field of cancer survivorship." You will be encouraged to hear how she has negotiated her own survivorship as a medical professional.
