We talk about Alex’s early days — being friends with Brian Blyther, discovering BMX, and riding at two of SoCal’s famous spots: the Azusa track and Pipeline Skatepark in Upland.We get into Alex’s friendship with Bo Usher, how he got his nickname “Super G” from a visit to the POW House, and meeting Chris Moeller, McGoo, Brad McDonald, Bill Ryan, and a lot of other key people who went on to become major figures in the BMX industry.Alex talks about the days driving to the ABA Grands and winning the Pit Bike race, working at S&M, selling S&M and later Super G t-shirts at the races, and putting on the Super G Jams at Sheep Hills and Twin Palms.We also talk about some of the riders who were sponsored by Super G Products.Alex then shares one of the most difficult times in his life — getting shot while riding his bike, waking up in ICU, and going through the long recovery that followed.This is just Part 1 of Alex “Super G”’s story. Over in the UK at the moment, so going to knock out some podcasts while here. First up, one of the hardest-working, dedicated guys I know in the UK – and the guy behind the Malverns Classic – Si Paton.Si came over earlier this week and we spent the whole day talking BMX, MTB, and more, and recorded an hour’s worth for the pod.We talk about Si’s early days growing up in Birmingham, riding Birmingham Wheels with local legends Anthony Butt and the West Midlands early-’80s BMX scene. Si talks about skating alongside BMX and getting into the MTB scene when it was blowing up in the early ’90s in the UK.We talk about Si putting on the National Downhill Series for British Cycling, bringing the Malverns back with backing from Clive Gosling and GT, and the ups and downs of running a monstrous event – plus how things are looking for this year’s event, which takes place in a few weeks’ time.We also talk about the Bob Haro / Gumball 3000 – IKONIX Bike Launch London event he was part of last week. Anthony Howie Waye is someone I’ve always wanted to do a podcast with, and finally—during a two-week trip to California this month with his daughter—Howie came over to hang out for the day, and we recorded a pod. We covered a lot in this one, from the start of Howie’s BMX career to riding for GT in the U.S., and then becoming the biggest name and a dominant Pro in Australia during the late ’80s and into the ’90s. We talk about him having to miss the 1989 home Worlds in Australia, meeting Mike Miranda and Toby Henderson, the competition down under, and the riders he battled with—guys like Paul Adams and Lee Egan—as well as the riders he respected and followed as a fan post-career, including Warwick Stevenson, Khalen Young, Sam Willoughby, Josh Jolly, Izaac Kennedy, and more. We also get into GT, S&S Racing, his first Worlds in 1991 in Norway, racing Christophe Leveque for the first time, and landing on the cover of BMX Plus! from that same Worlds main with Leveque. We dive into his 1994 trip to the U.S., winning the ABA World Cup in Toledo, Ohio, and then winning every lap on his way to the final at the 1994 World Championships at Waterford Oaks in Michigan. He shares his thoughts leading up to the main event, what happened once the gate dropped, and tearing his ACL. We also cover the next chapter in Howie’s life after racing—coaching, his apparel brand LKYBLN, his return trip to the U.S., Dirty Fest, and so much more.
