Calming the Chaotic Nervous System with Carter Doyle (Part I)Welcome to Calming the Chaos! Today, we’re talking about something we all have experienced, but none of us fully understand: “The nervous system.”Our nervous system is chaotic, brilliant, annoying, and somehow still thinks we live in the forest being hunted by wolves — even though the only predator we’ve encountered today is a parking ticket. So today, we’re going to dive into the absurdity and the tenderness of it — the science, the stories, and the moments when our bodies completely betrayed us at the worst possible times. And joining me is someone who can make emotional chaos sound both hilarious and profound — Carter Doyle, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who works with people whose chaos is layered: trauma, anxiety, ADHD, spiritual/identity hurt — and I help them calm the nervous system first so everything else is possible. So sit back and join us as we explore the beautiful disaster that is… your nervous systemLearn more about Carter at https://www.leafpsychiatry.com/#CalmingTheChaos#NervousSystemRegulation#RegulateYourNervousSystem#CalmYourMind#MentalHealthSupport#EmotionalWellbeing#StressReliefTools#HealingJourne#MentalHealthPodcast#WellnessPodcast#TherapyTalk#PsychologyToday#MindBodyConnection#TraumaInformed#ExpertInsights#AnxietyRelief#StressManagement#Overstimulated#BurnoutRecovery#FromChaosToCalm#Overwhelmed#InnerCalm#YouAreNotBroken#HealingIsPossible#FeelSafeAgain#CalmIsLearned#YourBodyKnows#NervousSystemReset | — | ||||||

| 9/22/25 | ![]() Betrayal in Relationships - Is Forgiveness Possible? Dr. Bruce Chalmer | “Betrayal in Relationships – Is Forgiveness Possible?” – with Dr. Bruce Chalmer Dr. Bruce Chalmer is a Licensed Psychologist in Vermont who has been working with couples for over 30 years. In this podcast, he offers his insights about the topic of betrayal in relationships. Dr. Chalmer explains what betrayal is, why people betray each other, and how to rebuild trust after a betrayal has occurred. Through his teaching, consulting, and books, his ideas have helped thousands of couples and their therapists. Together with his wife Judy Alexander, Dr. Chalmer hosts the podcast “Couples Therapy in Seven Words.” Dr. Chalmer’s book entitled “Betrayal and Forgiveness: How to Navigate the Turmoil and Learn to Trust Again,” helps us to understand why betrayal happens in relationships, and how to rebuild trust so that the wounds of betrayal can be healed. Show Notes:A substantial number of couples come to Bruce because major relationship betrayals have occurredTherapy is not a cookie cutter approach to healing relationshipsDr. Bruce defines betrayal as:1. Something big2. The expectations you have in a certain relationship (i.e., spouses, family, co-workers)3. Lies happen4. Mistrust resultsDr. Bruce’s Structure for Couples Therapy1. First session: Understand why a couple wants to be together, and 2 sets of needs that need to be meta. Stability (Knowing how to keep the relationship stable, not pushing buttons)b. Intimacy (Being open and honest with the ability to tolerate anxiety rather than avoid it)2. Lightbulbs will go off in the couple’s minds and they will see where intimacy and stability are compromised3. Treatment goals are made, part of which is to increase both stability and intimacy4. How will you know therapy is helping? Why do people betray each other? If intimacy is compromised, then people are more likely to betray each otherThe “Oh Shit” moment is when a person realizes that they have contributed to problems in the relationshipFinancial Betrayal examples: “I trusted you with something, and this trust that I gave you was not honored.”(Social Expectations, and types of Family betrayals)What do we do if we are the Betrayed or the Betrayer? Forgiveness1. Forgive yourself 2. Forgive the betrayer3. Forgive God (or, understand that betrayals do indeed happen)If you’re in a situation where you are still being hurt, it may not be safe for you to stay in the relationshipIf it’s a case of infidelity, they both need to restore / rebuild trustIf a betrayal happens, the relationship as you knew it is not the same…and you can build a new and sometimes better relationshipWebsite: https://brucechalmer.com Books:Dr. Chalmer’s book “Betrayal and Forgiveness” https://brucechalmer.com/betrayal-and-forgiveness/Dr. Chalmer’s book “It’s not about Communication – Why Everything you know about Couples Therapy is Wrong” https://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-About-Communication-Everything/dp/1667871935Podcast:Dr. Chalmer’s Podcast with his wife Judy Alexander called “Couples Therapy in Seven Words” https://couplestherapyinsevenwords.com/The seven words are: Be Kind, Don’t Panic, And Have FaithSocial Media:YouTube: @brucechalmer#mentalhealth #betrayal #forgiveness | — | ||||||

| 7/28/25 | ![]() Life with a Thousand Paper Cuts - Interview with Cole Grace | Life with A Thousand Paper Cuts – What PTSD Feels Like with Cole GraceJune was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) awareness month. And yes, even though it is now July, I am airing this interview with Cole Grace, who shares his story about what it feels like to have PTSD, and to recover and experience calm despite having a life going through chaos. Bio:Cole Grace had a difficult early childhood. His parents divorced when he was four years old. And although he was never physically or sexually abused, and never lost anyone tragically, he didn't think he had childhood trauma. Cole joined the Army National Guard and went to Iraq as a combat engineer responsible for IED route clearance and convoy security in 2005. He was attached to multiple units and low ranking because he got in trouble for smoking weed. So he got the worst of the worst jobs. Through this, Cole repressed his emotions in the moment, but later realized he had trauma from his childhood and his combat experience. Cole went back to school and ended up getting a high paying job for the government in 2012. He thought that meant that he was healed from the stomach episodes he suffered from while in Iraq, some of which led him to go to the emergency room after returning to the United States in 2006. When he worked for the government in 2012, it was in the midst of the opioid crisis. So that meant when he went to the hospital, many times they wouldn't give him pain medicine anymore. So he self medicated and eventually became addicted to opiates in 2015. Cole went to rehab in 2017 and learned about childhood trauma, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and started reading self-help books and books about trauma. He started trying different healing modalities and eventually putting together the outline for the book Internal to External - Calming the Chaos Within. “Your external world can change in an instant, but you can’t take away the internal things.”Timestamps 7:30 Cole tells his story10:00 The Army / Combat Experience14:00 Radiation Exposure in Iraq16:20 “I just checked off this whole checklist and I still don’t feel good.”19:10 “Unlearn your Pain and Depression” book by Howard Schubiner at https://unlearnyourpain.com/unlearn-your-pain-book/21:47 “The Body Keeps the Score” and “7 Habits for Highly Successful People” and other self-help books helped him connect to the subconscious 23:30 What Cole does to monitor his subconscious mind1. Awareness and Acceptance of Unhelpful Beliefs2. Reframing these beliefs into truthful / helpful ones3. Embracing more positivity4. Breathwork, affirmations and gratitude practices, personal mission statement27:00 Tracy says to focus on what’s both truthful and helpful when reframing beliefs and doing affirmationsCole agrees…and adds, “What you say has to have the possibility of being truthful”28:33 Tracy’s way of approaching Trauma with clients, and the benefits of addressing trauma that can benefit you in the long run29:36 Why should we even address trauma, anyway?31:32: “Between the stimulus and the response is a choice”Cole tells how he’s done the work, and yet still has some challenges, he deals with them“Heal Your Body” book by Louise Hay https://www.amazon.com/Heal-Your-Body-Louise-Hay/dp/9394613846In his life, Cole had to push through a lot of fear, justifications, and excuses to publish this book. But he did it. He believes that the book is inspiring and that it gives practical ways and “tactics” to improve your quality of life without the expectation of perfection.“I do not have it all figured out, and I don't pretend to. So I believe that makes me more relatable than some other people that write on the subject of mental health and PTSD.” 39:40 Cole’s Book... | — | ||||||

| 10/16/24 | ![]() Avoiding Romantic Relationships | Why Are Young People Avoiding Committed Romantic Relationships? – Interview with Jack KammerIntro: According to a report from the Pew Research Center, a random sampling of nearly 5,000 adults in the U.S., showed that 50 percent of single people are not interested in committed romantic relationships, and are not even interested in dating. Another 10 percent want nothing more than casual dates. This trend has been true for at least the past 15 YearsHere to help us understand this trend is Jack Kammer, who has a passion of helping people see and understand the connection between gender issues and some of America’s social problems. Jack has talked about issues between the sexes on radio, publications, podcasts and in person. He’s even appeared before both houses in Congress! His book called “Good Will Toward Men attempts to help us understand the breakdown is between men and women, and what to bring a balance of power between the sexes. Today, we hope to have an honest conversation about why young people are avoiding committed romantic relationships, and to help them feel more comfortable and safe about pursuing committed, romantic relationships in the future. I. This is the chaos: Half of single people don’t want a relationship, or even to date!Jack • It’s not necessarily that men and women don’t want to be in relationship. Men and women don’t want to be in a certain KIND of relationship• What does commitment by a man to a woman look like? What does commitment by a woman to a man look like?• Equality in a relationship as an example: “Who should pay for the first date?”• Many men DO want an equal relationship…and…what does that look like and what are the expectations?II. Timestamp 9:45: “It makes perfect sense why men don’t want relationship because the idea of a relationship has been so distorted. Men don’t want the trouble with a “relationship,” and would rather have the freedom to not be in a relationship. However….most men want to be loved, valued and appreciated. So they DO want relationships!• Tracy: “What questions should the Pew Center have asked on the survey?”• Jack: “Would you like to have a happy, committed relationship with a woman who loves you?”The social media algorithm: When they want men to click, they show horrible visions of women. Today, I talk with Tom Cronin, who is a speaker, writer, film producer, and motivational speaker. He has developed a meditation method that helped him rise out of the chaos of misery, anxiety, depression, addiction and agoraphobia. In this episode, we highlight parts of his film called “The Portal,” and Tom comments on how his meditation techniques can help people when their lives feel awful. Tom encourages people to “Change their inside worlds and watch their outside worlds change.” He encourages stillness and inner calm to help you manage the chaos in your life. “Changing the world, one mind at a time.” ~ Tom Cronin Bio:I was a broker in finance for 26 years and most of my life I had no idea what I was meant to do, what I was here for, or what my calling was. I was stressed, anxious, depressed, suffering from panic attacks and severe insomnia. It became so bad that I questioned whether I wanted to go on with life. Now it is very clear to me. I have a very deep understanding of who I am and what I’m here to do. My work now is to help other people like you find their passion and purpose like I did. In just a few years I left finance and became a meditation teacher, transformation coach, speaker, author of 6 books, producer of the film The Portal, founder of the app The Portal, and retreat host.I’m here to support you in realizing the immense potential that is within you right now...Website: www.tomcronin.comSocial Media Links:Instagram: @tomcronin#mentalhealth #improvemylife #depression | — | ||||||
| 6/30/24 | ![]() What is Chaos? 5 Ways to Calm Overwhelm | The word “Chaos” and “Chaotic” are words that seem to be floating around more and more as time goes on. But I was talking chaos back in 2019, before the Pandemic was even though of. Listen to what I said about chaos (this is me back in 2019)So what is Chaos? • Complete disorder • Unpredictable behavior • Random or intense situations • Small changes that happen in bundles or are sensitive in nature • Disorganized • (And my favorite) A confused mass or mixture. These can be in any of your major life domains, includingPhysicalMental / EmotionalEnvironmentalSocietalLegalPoliticalFamily / RelationshipFinancialSchoolCareer / OccupationalTechnologicalInstitutionalExamples: Big events, like any war, the Stock Market Crash, riots, weather systems that cause power outages or death such as hurricane Katrina), 9-11-2001, Watergate, January 6th, Columbine or any mass shooting, the Pandemic. But smaller, more personal events can cause you mental / emotional chaos: like a cancer diagnosis, changes in health care, moving, getting pulled over by a cop, getting robbed, paying more taxes, having kids, being a parent, graduating high school, a wedding, computer hard drive crashes, being ghosted. For all these situations of chaos there is a simple formula that you can use to calm yourself and have more order to your experience. And for this, I will use my yard as an example. So how did I calm the chaos?1. I noticed the situation and my thoughts and feelings about the situation. (Aware)2. I focused on what needed to be done to restore order (Assess)3. I committed my time, energy and patience to restoring order (Agree)4. I spent my time and energy to restore order, being as patient as possible (Act)5. I celebrated each successful restoration of order….not perfect…but orderly (Appreciate)Bottom Line: If you are aware that you are in chaos, you can assess what needs to be done to restore order, agree to commit the time to take action to restore order, and appreciate each successful restoration of order. You can do what I did in my garden in any area of your life!#mentalhealth #psychology #gardening | — | ||||||

But what if there are Licensed Psychotherapists out in the world who are making people’s mental health problems worse? Well, that’s what author and journalist Abigail Shrier postulates in her book “Bad Therapy – Why kids aren’t growing up.” This book accuses therapists of harming people and children by• The rise in accessibility of treatment isn’t producing positive outcomes• Not informing parents what is going on with their kids in therapy• Not telling kids the risks of therapy, and that it can do harm• Talking about feelings which can lead to increased rumination, anxiety and depression• Recommending therapy to those who don’t need it• Keeping people in therapy to keep an income stream for themselves• Avoiding helping the truly mentally ill• Selling a generation on the idea that everyone is sick• Telling people everyone has trauma, when it’s really just “bad memories”• Strong-arming their suggestions and judgments onto children Full Interview Links:Joe Rogan’s Podcast Interview with Abigail Shrier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z72hgYk-5iIUnHeard’s Podcast Interview with Abigail Shrier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJMhyG50N-Y&t=1459sLinks and ResourcesMy Counseling Website: www.lokahicounseling.comMy Professional Disclosure FormContact Abigail at https://www.abigailshrier.com/WACs and RCWs for Mental Health Counselinghttps://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and-certificates/professions-new-renew-or-update/mental-health-counselor/lawsTo File a Complainthttps://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and-certificates/file-complaint-about-provider-or-facility/health-professions-complaint-processLinks and Resources American Counseling Association Code of Ethical Conduct for Counselors: https://www.counseling.org/resources/...
