Good Luck With That: A Podcast About Skateboarding

Maddy Brown, better known as WNBA Data, joins us to talk WNBA playoffs, making statistics interesting, what the numbers can (and can’t) tell us about sports, and the growing role of data in women’s sports. Then we bring it back to skateboarding: an industry that has historically relied less on data and more on “seems right,” and look at the value women and gender-expansive skaters may be creating that the industry isn’t measuring. What data are we missing, what questions should we be asking, and what could the numbers tell us about the bigger story of skateboarding?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've had a lot of new listeners finding the show lately, thank you! It felt like the right time to revisit one of our favorite conversations with Alexis Sablone. One of the most respected to ever do it. Chiseled into our skateboarding Mt. Rushmore. We talk process to obsession, where it helps and where it gets in the way. Early childhood attempts at Frankensteining the perfect specimen (via bugs). The time Alexis brokered a deal with an injured skater to buy her way into the X Games. Showing up to a contest in Shanghai with only two left shoes. Everything from welding to coaching to all of her new projects. And why skateboarding is just cool... and always will be. We also finally crack the code on Alexis' IG handle @suminaynay. If you've ever wondered where it came from, you're not alone. So if you're new to the show, this feels like a pretty perfect place to start. And if you've heard it before, I think you'll hear it with fresh ears.
