Average Podcast Episode Length in 2026
The typical podcast episode published in 2026 runs about 35 minutes — the median across 58,886 shows in the CastFox index. Half of all shows fall between 18 min and 56 min. The mean is higher, at 43 min, because a minority of long-form shows pulls the average up. 43% of shows keep episodes under 30 minutes, while 21% routinely run an hour or longer.
Key findings
- The typical podcast episode runs 35 minutes in 2026 (median across 58,886 shows; 95% confidence interval 34.8–35.3 minutes).
- The mean is 43 min. A long tail of 90-minute-plus shows (8% of all shows) pulls the average above the median, so the median is the better guide to a "normal" episode.
- TV & Film (59 min), Music (58 min), Leisure (53 min), Comedy (51 min) have the longest episodes of any genre.
- Kids & Family (24 min), Education (25 min), News (27 min) have the shortest.
- English-language shows run 37 min; Italian (18 min) and French (22 min) shows are the shortest of the major languages we measured.
How long is the average podcast episode?
Measured per show, the median podcast episode in 2026 is 35.1 minutes long. Measured per episode, the figure is 32.3 minutes: shows that publish often tend to publish shorter episodes, so they pull the episode-level number down slightly.
Either way, the "average" podcast is a little over half an hour. That's shorter than the hour-long interview format many people picture, and the spread is wide. A quarter of shows run under 18 min per episode, and a quarter run longer than 56 min.
How podcast lengths are distributed
Lengths spread almost evenly across the first four buckets. 21.5% of shows sit under 15 minutes: daily news briefings, devotionals, short lessons and kids' stories. At the other end, 7.7% of shows regularly run 90 minutes or more, mostly long-form conversation, sports talk and film commentary.
Average podcast length by genre
Genre is the biggest driver of episode length. The longest genre runs more than twice as long as the shortest: TV & Film at 59 min against Kids & Family at 24 min.
| Genre | Median | Middle 50% of shows | Shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV & Film | 58.5 min | 37–83 min | 1,828 |
| Music | 58.0 min | 29–73 min | 2,258 |
| Leisure | 53.4 min | 30–78 min | 2,069 |
| Comedy | 50.8 min | 30–70 min | 2,199 |
| Sports | 47.4 min | 29–66 min | 4,819 |
| Arts | 43.2 min | 22–73 min | 2,926 |
| True Crime | 40.9 min | 25–57 min | 383 |
| History | 39.6 min | 18–72 min | 969 |
| Society & Culture | 35.6 min | 18–57 min | 5,912 |
| Religion & Spirituality | 34.0 min | 20–47 min | 9,639 |
| Science | 33.4 min | 16–54 min | 853 |
| Fiction | 30.9 min | 24–79 min | 925 |
| Government | 30.8 min | 17–47 min | 312 |
| Technology | 30.1 min | 14–51 min | 1,306 |
| Health & Fitness | 29.6 min | 16–49 min | 3,523 |
| Business | 29.0 min | 16–44 min | 6,653 |
| News | 26.8 min | 10–51 min | 6,216 |
| Education | 24.6 min | 12–43 min | 4,536 |
| Kids & Family | 24.2 min | 11–43 min | 1,080 |
Personality-driven genres run longest: TV & Film, Music, Leisure, Comedy. These shows are built around hosts talking, and audiences come for the conversation, not a fixed information payload. Information-first genres run shortest. News (27 min) is pulled down by daily briefings, and Education and Kids & Family favour short, single-topic episodes.
Format barely changes the picture. Episodic shows run 35 min and serialised, story-in-order shows run 33 min (770 serial shows measured).
Episode length by language
English-language podcasts run longer than most: 37 min at the median. Italian-language shows (18 min) and French-language shows (22 min) are the shortest among the languages with enough shows to measure. The genre mix also differs from language to language, so when you benchmark a show in another market, compare it against shows in the same genre and language.
How long should a podcast be?
There is no single right length, but there is a normal range for each genre, and the genre table above is the most useful benchmark. Some practical readings of the data:
- Starting a show: aim for your genre's middle-50% range. A business show at 29 minutes or a comedy show at 51 minutes looks normal to listeners of that genre. Far outside the range, you need a reason.
- Booking guest appearances: long-form genres such as Comedy, Sports and TV & Film give a guest close to an hour of airtime. In Business and Education, expect closer to half an hour, so prepare tighter talking points.
- Buying podcast ads: episode length shapes how many ad breaks a show can carry. Check a show's own episode lengths before you assume it has a mid-roll slot.
In CastFox, every podcast profile lists recent episodes with their durations, so you can check a specific show's length before you pitch or buy. See how show analysis works.
Methodology
Source. The CastFox episode index, which stores the most recent episodes of each show CastFox tracks, taken from public RSS feeds. Durations come from each feed's episode duration field.
Sample. 300,000 episodes drawn at 6,000 evenly spaced points across the full index. We kept episodes published between January 1 and September 30, 2026 (226,458). We removed episodes marked as trailers or bonus content (leaving 224,007) and dropped durations under 1 minute or over 6 hours, which are almost always feed errors. The final dataset is 211,677 episodes from 58,886 shows.
Headline measure. Because the index keeps each show's latest episodes, shows that publish daily contribute fewer of their episodes than they actually release. To avoid that bias, we compute each show's median episode length, then report the median across shows, so every show counts once. The 95% confidence interval comes from 400 bootstrap resamples. The episode-level median, 32.3 minutes, is reported for transparency.
Groups. Genre is the show's primary Apple Podcasts category; language is the feed's declared language. Groups with fewer than 300 shows are not reported.
Limits. RSS durations are self-reported by publishers and can be rounded or include dynamically inserted ads. This report is a 2026 snapshot, not a multi-year trend: the index is weighted toward recent episodes, so we do not compare against earlier years.
