After a short break I am delighted to share this episode with you where I am honoured to be talking Doris Locke. Doris originates from America, but she now lives with her Husband in Norwich in the U.K. She was eventually diagnosed in 2017 with High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer after seeking medical help for some time for pain. We discuss how medical gaslighting is an issue in women’s health and that we are dismissed with less serious conditions before an eventual diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer. Doris spoke to me about the importance of the microbiome of our gut and nutrition to sustain health. We also talked about advocating for yourself, the importance of exercise and mindset, and the impact on those closest to us. Doris discussed the use of re-purposed drugs in the Care Oncology Clinic regime (similar to Jane McLellands “How to starve cancer”. In this episode I am delighted to talk to Diane Boothby, an amazing lady who tirelessly raises awareness of Ovarian Cancer despite going through her own difficulties. She even took her campaign to high places as you will hear. Diane was diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, and she tells me about the difficulties she experienced during the process of diagnosis and then how hard it was going through the covid pandemic at the time. We talk about the rareness of the disease Diane was diagnosed with, and how she managed to cope after surgery. In addition to this, Diane’s Husband was himself diagnosed with cancer, so life was very traumatic for them both at that time. Gemma has a very powerful story to tell of being your best advocate and trusting your intuition when something feels wrong. It was a long-crooked road to diagnosis for Gemma which seems to be a very common issue for many of us. We also talk about so much more in this episode including Endometriosis, anxiety and what helped Gemma, insomnia, the new normal, infertility and where to find support. In this episode I talk to Carol Kutzner who is a Senior Nurse and was diagnosed with Clear Cell Ovarian Cancer in 2021 at the age of 60. Carol tells me the all too familiar story of feeling that something was not quite right but not knowing what. Many of us have been there, attributing symptoms to other everyday ailments and health issues. Following the twisty road of diagnosis, Carol underwent surgery and chemotherapy whereby she was then deemed to be “no evidence of disease’. However, a short while later she found herself on the rollercoaster ride of disease recurrence. Carol talks openly about her experiences over the last few years since diagnosis and subsequent recurrence and shares her wisdom regarding what she has learnt along the way. We didn’t get chance to talk about her support network, but Carol wanted to acknowledge the immense support of her partner Rob. He has been ‘her rock’ from the very start of her cancer experience and so this episode is dedicated to the amazing Rob! So, in this episode I am hoping I can share with you the benefit of my wisdom from my nursing days but also from my own personal experience with cancer how I have coped. In this episode I talk to Jo Fjelle, who describes how she endured many years of concern over her potential to develop cancer due to her family medical history. Sadly, she was not taken seriously and was unable to have the vital genetic testing that was required to ascertain her risks of developing Breast and Ovarian Cancer. Eventually she did develop Ovarian Cancer and after having the BRCA test, which she paid for privately, Jo found out that she was BRCA 2 positive. For this reason, Jo elected to have a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. Jo’s story really is quite concerning given that she was so sure that she was at risk of developing cancer, yet I couldn’t fail to be inspired and uplifted by her story at the same time. Jo has such a zest for life and she has the biggest, kindest heart. I hope you enjoy listening to her story. Becky tells me about her symptoms before being diagnosed with High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer diagnosis and the subsequent chemotherapy and surgery that followed. Becky’s diagnosis caused a relapse in her mental health which she has endured for most of her life. Since recording the Podcast Becky has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder which has been very hard for her and her family to cope with. Becky was trying to remember a song for her signature tune. It was Elbow, “One day like this”. As this episode is released, Becky has been diagnosed with a recurrence of Ovarian Cancer, so on behalf of us all I wish her the very best outcome as she faces further treatment. * update* Becky sadly died on 15 October 2023. In this episode I talk to Linda Panter, who has led such an interesting life from living in a forest when she left school to becoming a District Nursing Matron. Linda shares with me how she thought her symptoms were attributable to something else much less serious but was so busy with her work and caring for others that she just carried on. Eventually she was diagnosed with Primary Peritoneal Cancer. Linda describes how hard it is to be suddenly the patient which is something many Doctors and Nurses will empathise with. She is now living with incurable disease but is very positive about living each day as best she can and she describes what many of us feel in that life never returns back to normal after cancer. We do talk in this episode about her plans regarding end of life care including DNA CPR, funeral planning, Will making etc. I hope you find Linda’s story as inspiring as I did. In this episode I talk to Katie Wilkins who was living her best life at university when she first had symptoms. This eventually led to a diagnosis of Borderline Ovarian Tumours. Then 17 years later in 2020, Katie was young, newly married and loving her job when she had more symptoms which led to a mixed diagnosis Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer and Borderline ovarian Tumours. Katie shares how she went through fertility preservation followed by major surgery and chemotherapy. Sometime later Katie had to have further surgery to minimise the chance of recurrence and three weeks before we recorded this episode, she had her uterus removed. Katie founded a UK group for women diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer to give women a voice to effect change. In addition to this, Katie is now super busy with World Ovarian Cancer Day 2022, which will see a global campaign to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer. Jane is a very proactive lady who used the internet in a positive way to learn more about her disease and what was available to help her. Jane underwent surgery followed by conventional treatment with chemotherapy and she shared a funny story about her wig on Mother’s Day! We spoke about how Jane coped with the diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer and how her can-do attitude to life helped her through. She prefers to know the truth of what is happening as that helps her to understand and cope with what she is facing. Further on in her disease Jane sought less conventional treatment when she started to follow Jane McLellands regime. Then more recently, Jane developed Cancer on her Lip and underwent significant treatment which she also tells me about. In this episode I talk to Alisi Jack-Kaufusi a young woman from Australia who was diagnosed with a combination of High Grade and Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer. Alisi talked very honestly about her symptoms and what led to her diagnosis. She told me about how she was made aware of her diagnosis just prior to being taken into the operating theatre for a biopsy and how shocked she was because she was only 24. We get to hear how Alisi’s cancer was managed with surgery and chemotherapy and how she coped with diagnosis and recurrences. We talk about what “toxic positivity” is and how it can affect our ability to feel the emotions we need to feel. Alisi has been a strong advocate in the Ovarian Cancer community and has been tirelessly raising awareness of this disease. She really is an inspiration, and I found her story heart wrenching to hear! In this episode Alisi had just had a PET scan that day. I am so pleased to report that the scan shows a continued good response to Avastin (Bevacizimab). That good news is definitely something for us to celebrate. In this episode I talk to Hannah Lane who was diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer at the age of 35. Hannah recounts her story of frequent GP visits shortly after having her second child. Eventually she was diagnosed with extensive disease that resulted in chemotherapy, major surgery resulting in an Ileostomy and then recurrent disease. Hannah campaigns tirelessly to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer outside of the cancer community. She wants people to know the signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, no matter what their age or gender. In this episode, I am talking to Lesley Anderson who is living with a rare sub-type of Ovarian Cancer known as Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer. Whilst her Greyhound Ted was sleeping, Lesley kindly talked to me about the symptoms that she initially thought were ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome’. However, when friends noticed her weight loss, Lesley went to her GP who carried out further investigations that led to a cancer diagnosis. Lesley tells me about her surgery, chemotherapy and her Hormone Blocker maintenance treatment. In this episode, Lesley talks about significant bereavements that happened during her treatment which were very difficult to discuss because they are still so raw. It was lovely to chat to Lesley today because she really wants to share her story to help others and had some good tips regarding how to cope. In this episode, I am talking to Helen Goldstraw who is living with a rare sub-type of Ovarian Cancer known as Granulosa Cell. She tells me about herself, her career at Royal Doulton and as a childminder and how she has learned to crochet during the Coronavirus pandemic. Currently, she’s being rather industrious and organised by crocheting Christmas presents. Helen told me about how Granulosa Cell Ovarian Cancer has a different blood marker and how it behaves differently to other sub-types of ovarian cancer. | 9/15/21 | Ep 12 Julie Flying High | ‘Living with Ovarian Cancer’ is a Podcast full of inspiring stories told by people or their loved ones, who themselves have lived with, or are still living with Ovarian Cancer. Each person’s story is a gift; unique and is told from the heart in their own words. I am your host, Diane Evans-Wood. In this episode, I am talking to Julie Drake. Julie explains the chain of events that led her to seek medical attention prior to diagnosis in 2020. Her experience was frustratingly slow to begin with and Julie found herself having to push to be investigated and diagnosed because she knew something was very wrong. Her diagnosis of stage 4 high Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer came during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was a huge shock to Julie. She tells me about the 7-hour surgery that she endured, how she recovered and the bombshell that her boyfriend at the time dropped on her. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed; Julie looked at herself in the mirror at the long scar down her abdomen and at her bald head and wondered how anyone would ever love her again. After recovering, Julie soon returned to the activities that she loved and very soon found love again. During her sailing holiday in Spain with her new love, Julie was told her cancer had recurred. All this happened within a year and in Julie’s words “cancer is a roller-coaster”. Julie continues to embrace life and I love her quote “Don’t let life happen; make life happen”. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to Julie today and I am sure you will find her story very inspiring. Julie talked about Macmillan Cancer Support and the life coaching she had with them. | 8/18/21 | Ep 11 Karen seizing the moment to follow the sun | In this episode, I am talking to Karen Marszalec who was in the throes of moving from Michigan to Florida in America when we spoke. I am so grateful to her for taking time out of her hugely busy relocation schedule to share her story with me. Karen was diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer in 2015 following an abnormal PAP smear, which is very unusual to say the least. The cancer was found in her fallopian tube which is probably why the PAP smear picked up abnormal cells that had migrated. Karen tells me about her initial surgery and disease management including Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) when she experienced recurrent disease in 2020. Karen’s healing process didn’t exactly go to plan following her initial surgery and she tells how she had post-op complications which resulted in readmission to hospital. We chat about the side effects of the Aromatase Inhibitors because Karen now takes Arimidex as a maintenance treatment. Karen tells me how she coped and how she feels following the diagnosis and subsequent management. After all that she has been through, Karen and her Husband have seized the opportunity to move across country to warmer climes to help alleviate the constant joint pains from her medication. It was a pleasure to chat to Karen today and I wish her all the best for the move to Florida. | 5/7/21 | Ep 10 Sharon, Nurse, Author and Adventurer | ‘Living with Ovarian Cancer’ is a Podcast full of inspiring stories told by Women or their loved ones, who themselves have lived with, or are still living with Ovarian Cancer. In this episode, I am talking to Sharon Dobbs-Richards, who recounts the harrowing experiences that led to her eventual diagnosis of High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer. Sharon went from being a fit, adventurous and athletic woman at the height of her Nursing career to being unable to breathe, walk or function. She really felt she was going to die because she was so ill. This story encompasses Sharon’s diagnosis, treatment and recurrences with a frank discussion about how she was failed to be diagnosed for a long period of time. Eventually after several courses of chemotherapy, Sharon’s body could no longer cope with further conventional medical treatment so after a period of recovery she embraced Integrative Oncology which she feels has saved her life. Sharon spoke to me in this episode before her return to work the following week but she has been very busy writing her first book during her time off. “How to kill your gynaecologist” will be available in May 2021. | 4/21/21 | Ep 8 Gemma the creatrix and lawyer | Living with Ovarian Cancer’ is a Podcast full of inspiring stories told by Women or their loved ones, who themselves have lived with, or are still living with Ovarian Cancer. Each Woman’s story is a gift; unique and is told from the heart in their own words. I am your host, Diane Evans-Wood. In this episode, I am talking to Gemma Lodge who shares her story about her long and winding road of being diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. Her story begins with what was thought to be an isolated Pulmonary Embolism, but she soon developed other symptoms that were attributed to stressful life events at the time. A holiday to Texas saw Gemma taken to hospital as an emergency where she was subsequently diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. On her immediate return to the UK, she had urgent surgery followed by chemotherapy and Avastin, but this was not effective as a scan showed disease progression. She started a different treatment regime which fortunately is showing a reduction of disease. Gemma tells me how she was at the height of her Law career at the time and had to take sick leave. As a professional with an individual client case load it was essential to be reliable and consistent, but Gemma describes why she wasn’t able to continue to work during chemotherapy. We touch on the difficulties surrounding whether to tell an estranged family member about her diagnosis and then the guilt associated with the decision not to. Content warning: we talk about how surgery sadly took away Gemma’s ability to have children of her own and how that impacted on her emotionally. Our conversation also broaches hospice and palliative care which is really helping Gemma’s quality of life. Gemma’s partner has recently proposed to her and so she is now able to focus on planning their wedding. We all wish them both every happiness in their married life together.
