| 8/27/26 | EP 126 The Deadly History of Eating Disorders | In Conversation with Alice Weinreb | EP 126 The Deadly History of Eating Disorders | In Conversation with Alice Weinreb Eating disorders didn’t suddenly appear in the 1970s—but that’s when they finally received a name and diagnoses began exploding worldwide. Maureen Kritzer-Lange joins historian Alice Weinreb to uncover how Karen Carpenter, Twiggy, Barbie, feminism, body image, and the treatment industry shaped our understanding of eating disorders—and why, despite decades of awareness, meaningful progress remains painfully limited.Alice Weinreb is an Associate Professor of History at Loyola University Chicago, where she teaches courses in women and gender, modern Europe, and the industrial food system. She is currently working on a book titled Troubled Appetites: Disordered Eating, Mental Illness, and the World We Live In. Her previous book was awarded several book prizes; her current project has been supported by funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Library of Medicine.produced by David Alan Kogut | — | ||||||

Together, they explore the hidden struggles of high-functioning women who appear confident and successful while privately battling anxiety, self-criticism, food fears, and body shame. The episode offers practical ways to create healthier social-media boundaries, challenge black-and-white thinking, stop commenting on people’s bodies, and rebuild a more compassionate relationship with food, appearance, and self-worth.The powerful truth: The problem may not be your body—it may be everything happening beneath the surface.----------Francesca Emma, LMHC-D, is a licensed psychotherapist, eating-disorder and body-image specialist, and founder of The Collective: Therapy by Francesca Emma. With more than 15 years of clinical experience, she helps women, adolescents, and families navigate disordered eating, anxiety, perfectionism, and body-image distress. Gaudiani, MDARE YOU SICK ENOUGH TO BE TREATED?POTS. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Gastroparesis. Constipation. Bone density loss. Dental damage. Chronic pain. Slowed metabolism. These are just some of the medical complications that can show up with eating disorders and undernutrition — even when someone’s labs look “normal” and even when they don’t “look sick.”In this powerful episode of My Secret Life with an Eating Disorder, I speak with Dr. Jennifer L. Gaudiani, founder and medical director of the Gaudiani Clinic, about the dangerous belief so many people carry:“I’m not sick enough to need help.”Dr. Gaudiani is board certified in internal medicine, trained at Harvard, Boston University, and Yale, and is internationally recognized for her work in the medical complications of eating disorders. Her clinic provides trauma-informed, weight-inclusive medical care for eating disorders, undernutrition, and complex medical conditions. Her message is clear:You do not have to look sick to be sick. You do not need to wait until your body is in crisis. You are sick enough to deserve care.Contact Dr. Gaudiani / Gaudiani Clinic:Website: gaudianiclinic.comInstagram: @gaudianiclinicBook: Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders and Undernutrition | — | ||||||

| 10/16/25 | EP 105 When Being Alone Almost Killed Me! | In Conversation with John Weiman cplc | EP 105 When Being Alone Almost Killed Me! | In Conversation with John Weiman cplcHe was one of the top marriage therapists in the country. But when his life unraveled—divorce, death, isolation—his only companion became a bottle. One night, he walked into a hospital with stomach pain. Hours later, doctors told him his liver was failing. Two months to live. What followed was a battle for survival, self-esteem, and redemption so raw it will change how you see loneliness forever.Listen to My Secret Life with an Eating Disorder as Maureen Kritzer-Lange sits down with John Weiman—a man who went from being abandoned, addicted, and dying… to being reborn through courage, connection, and truth. Hear how he faced death four times, waited 12 years for a transplant, and discovered what it really means to be alone but not lonely.----------------After finishing his training at New York University, he began to work closely with Dr. James Masterson (The Masterson Institute)who was known throughout the world for his work with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. He worked for nine years at a long term psychiatric hospital named High Point Hospital in Rye Brook, New York. After nine years, due to family responsibilities, he left the field for twenty years. After his divorce, mother's death and a friend's death, he began to abuse alcohol. This came to a head 16 years ago when he walked into a hospital with stomach pain. After four hours of testing, they told him he was in complete liver failure and if he continued his behavior, he would be dead in two months. While dedicating himself to his health, he decided to return to the field of his dreams(psychology) He enrolled in The Gottman Institute which is world renowned for its research on what makes and breaks relationships. The Gottmans could predict with 95% accuracy what couples would thrive and what couples wouldn't. John has worked with over three thousand couples and has created a model for sessions that is not time limited. Typically, he meets with couples around three hours and the focus is on walking out of the session better than they walked in. He believes the couple gets further faster. In his experience, couples don't have the patience to meet once a week for an hour for three or four months. | — | ||||||
