| 6/23/26 | ![]() Only Three Lads: Top 5 Album 1-2 Punches with Ben Crum from Great Lakes | BIFF! This week, we're focusing on Album 1-2 punches...that is, albums where the first two songs knock you out. BANG! Our Third Lad is Ben Crum from long-running Elephant 6 band Great Lakes. POW! More than 25 years and eight records on from Great Lakes' classic debut, Ben Crum returns with a fantastic new Great Lakes album, Don't Swim Too Close (HHBTM Records). The immediately accessible record draws from classic rock tradition, echoing both the Americana spirit of The Band and Neil Young and the proto-indie rock of Television and the Velvet Underground. Crum's dry humor bubbles up throughout, tempering heavy, earnest moments with wit. WHAMMO! This is very likely to be the only music podcast you listen to today that incorporates both boxing and Scuffy the Tugboat references. KO!! | 6/22/26 | ![]() Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- How Dr. Dre Reshaped Hip Hop 3 Times with guest Mick Breezy | You guys ready for this one? Dr. Dre didn’t just have a great run in hip-hop… he reshaped the entire genre three separate times in less than thirty years. First, as the driving force behind N.W.A. He helped take raw, unfiltered gangsta rap out of the streets of Compton and slam it onto the national stage. Straight Outta Compton, an actual FBI warning letter — the whole thing was a cultural explosion. Then, after leaving N.W.A., Dre basically invents the G-Funk sound. The Chronic, Snoop Dogg, laid-back Parliament-Funkadelic grooves mixed with hard street edge. Suddenly that West Coast vibe took over radio, took over the charts, and defined the entire mid-90s. And just when you think he’s done? Late ‘90s Dre starts Aftermath, signs this skinny white kid from Detroit named Eminem, and opens hip-hop up to a whole new generation of fans. Then comes 50 Cent, Kendrick, and the business empire that turned him into a billionaire. Three different eras. Three different sounds. Three different ways he changed what hip-hop could be. So today we’re asking: Is Dr. Dre the most important man in hip-hop history? This one’s a banger. Let’s get into it. Episode Playlist Check out this week's Episode Playlist. | 6/20/26 | ![]() I'm In Love With That Song: The Band - "Life Is A Carnival" | By 1971, The Band was one of the most influential forces in rock music, having steered the genre away from psychedelic excess toward a more rustic, roots-based sound. However, the recording of their fourth album, Cahoots, was a period of high tension within the group. Despite these fractures, the album’s opening track, "Life is a Carnival," stands out as a masterpiece of groove and atmosphere, drawing on Robertson’s real-life experiences working in a traveling circus to paint a vivid picture of life as a relentless "hustle." Let’s dive inside the track to examine the individual elements that make it work: the interplay between Levon Helm’s "behind the beat" drumming, Rick Danko’s fretless bass, Robbie Robertson’s funky guitar work, and the "calliope" atmosphere created by Garth Hudson’s Lowrey organ. And a major highlight is Allen Toussaint’s contribution; the New Orleans legend’s horn arrangements were written specifically to weave around Robertson’s existing guitar solo, resulting in a rhythmic conversation that remains irresistible decades later. This episode is a tribute not just to a great song, but to the enduring legacy of five musicians who changed the landscape of American music. | 6/20/26 | ![]() Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rock PR Veteran Sharon Chevin | We are proud to welcome Rock PR veteran Sharon Chevin who has been in the music business for more than 4 decades. What began as a deep love for rock music became a sustaining career which has taken her around the world and helped her forge friendships with some of the biggest artists on the planet. These days, Sharon promotes and manages media for prog rock legends Yes (and she wants me to remind everyone that Aurora is out now) and Steve Hackett (she teases his new collaboration with Marillion's Steve Rothery) but has worked with and hung around some of the biggest stars of all time. Her stories are amazing and funny as she shares how Alice Cooper will work a 14 hour day as long as you give him a couple of hours to shop. Hear how she had to convince hotel staff in Germany that she needed corn flakes for Tom Petty and George Harrison at 1 AM. She also talks about going to see a new band at The Hammersmith Palais called U2 with Pete Townshend and Bruce Springsteen. Mostly, Sharon lets us know that most of the top talent are marvelous people who are great to work with. But not all of them are and she drops a couple of names onto the jerk list. But mostly we hear about how Chris Squire invited her to stay with his family after an earthquake or how Jon Lord would always drop by her local pub for a glass of wine when he was in town. She admits she was instantly charmed by Billy Idol the moment she met him and how Bryan Adams talked her out of getting Bonnie Raitt's picture taken with Madonna. We're just glad Sharon is still doing PR for bands we love and that she's still sharing her stories of her rock n roll odyssey. | 6/20/26 | ![]() See Hear Podcast - Interview with Mary Zournazi, director of "My Rembetika Blues" | The origins of popular American and English music forms like blues, jazz, rock and folk are well documented in the English-speaking world (and possibly the non-English speaking world). So, when a film comes along that looks at something outside of that realm, I find my interest piqued. Welcome to episode 135 of See Hear Podcast. Greek-Australian film maker and academic Mary Zournazi decided she wanted to make a personal documentary about the history of Rembetika music, and its origins. I say “personal” because the story she presents is through the lens of her family history. This is no ordinary documentary about “this thing happening leading to that thing happening”. She goes back to the story of her grandmother being a refugee during the Greco-Turkish war of the early 1920s, and how that war led to the environment of Greek diaspora refugees resettling in Piraeus and Thessaloniki. Many of these people brought their musical expertise and started playing in hash dens, singing songs of hard times – hence, why Rembetika is often called the blues of Greece. Mary’s 2021 documentary My Rembetika Blues does what all good music documentaries should do – it tells us as much about social circumstances as it does about music. She tells her family story, speaks to historians, musicians, instrument makers, a rap artist who links Rembetika to his modern style of performing, and a clergyman who is also a musicologist explaining the structure of the ancient Middle Eastern styles that led to Rembetika. Tim is still on leave, but Kerry and I had a brilliant time chatting with Mary about her film and personal history. This is a film that should be seen by anyone with a wider interest in music, and how history dictates its development. We’re hugely grateful for her time. You can watch the film on Video On Demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/myrembetikablues2 or if you’re a Kanopy member (and why wouldn’t you be), check to see if it’s on your library’s film catalogue. If you want to watch the Costas Ferris film Rembetiko directed by Costas Ferris that served as Mary’s inspiration to investigate Rembetika music, it’s on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZXSjtZ0P1I See Hear is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. | 6/18/26 | ![]() My Rock Moment: Legendary Bassist Leland Sklar: James Taylor, Phil Collins & The Immediate Family | Legendary bassist Leland Sklar has played on more than 2,000 albums, performed with some of the biggest names in music, and helped create the soundtrack of the last five decades. But behind the credits is a fascinating story of talent, timing, friendship, and an unwavering love of music. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Leland reflects on his remarkable journey…from growing up in Los Angeles, to the moment James Taylor walked into a rehearsal for Leland's band Wolfgang and reportedly told Peter Asher, "I just found the bass player of my dreams." We dive into the magic of the Troubadour era, where Leland found himself surrounded by future legends including Carole King, Russ Kunkel, and Danny Kortchmar, and discuss the uniquely collaborative spirit of Laurel Canyon. Along the way, we talk about the tremendous impact Peter Asher had on his career, the importance of giving session musicians proper credit, and how a chance opportunity turned into decades of performing and recording with James Taylor, Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, and countless others. Leland also recounts surviving two frightening airplane incidents, including a near-disaster en route to a Kent State performance, his deep admiration for Phil Collins, why "In the Air Tonight" remains his favorite song to play live, and the origins of The Immediate Family and the acclaimed documentary that tells the story of the musicians behind some of rock's most iconic recordings. And of course, we couldn't resist talking about his YouTube channel, his viral Everybody Loves Me photo project, and the humor that has endeared him to generations of fans. By the end of the 1980's Motley Crue was near the mountain top of hair metal bands. Dr. Feelgood cemented their reign with Nikki Sixx's lyrics, Mick Mars' guitar riffs, good looking platinum blond Vince Neil as the frontman and the heavy drums of the crazy Tommy Lee. The album contained 5 hit singles and videos that were on MTV non-stop, include the title track, Kickstart My Heart, Without You, Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.) and Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away). Dr. Feelgood was their 5th studio album was produced by the great Bob Rock. It made it to #1 on the US Billboard charts and eventually went 6 times platinum. The album signaled the end of a decade, hair metal and Motley Crue for a time. This was the Zeus' pick. | 6/16/26 | ![]() Only Three Lads: Top 5 "One and Done" Bands (with Frank Boscoe from The Ekphrastics) | This week, we’re covering bands who released one…and only one…proper album in their career. Sometimes they say everything they need to say in one album long statement. Sometimes, they attempt to chase the same feeling of the first album and can’t quite repeat the magic. Sometimes they’re not given a chance. Our Third Lad knows a little something about being in a "one and done" band. Frank Boscoe’s great ‘90s indiepop band Wimp Factor 14 released exactly one proper album for Little Teddy Records, 1993’s Ankle Deep. Fortunately, more music followed with his mid-to-late ‘90s band Vehicle Flips, 2000s group The Gazetteers, and this decade, The Ekphrastics. Fortunately, The Ekphrastics were NOT "one and done," as they released their marvelous third album, All of a Sudden, Pow!, on Harriet Records in September 2025. Like the two albums that preceded it, it contains the kind of songwriting prowess that makes you marvel at how the songs can be so clever, so novel, so well researched, and yet so infectious and accessible. For example, how about a song called “I’m Going to Read You the Riot Act” where he then ponders where the term came from, and then actually READS you the Riot Act as it was written in 1715 England? Or how about the wind chill factor? Or journeyman first baseman John Jaso?. Experience short stories about aging marching bands, bee stings, COVID testing vans, money-laundering art galleries, rampageous hockey fans, who’s in the obituaries today, and unwritten pop songs. He had considerable help, so Markus & Ray delve into the whole scenario! Their recollection of these hit songs, and the artists to whom they were attributed, comes from being kids who grew up with 45s in the house. | 6/14/26 | ![]() Love That Album Podcast - Interview with Peter Luscombe | There are very few artists who can claim popularity in one decade, then claim it all over again with a new band or approach to music. In Australia in the 1970s, Joe Camilleri was a huge draw with his band Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. They created a blend of R&B and reggae that worked well, and were a big draw in Australian pubs and concert venues. After the demise of the Falcons, Camilleri started a new band called The Black Sorrows that started life as a Zydeco outfit, then evolved into a blend of Americana, soul and a touch of Van Morrison inspired songs. …..this episode isn't about Joe Camilleri..... Welcome to Episode 193 of Love That Album. The drummer for most of The Black Sorrows' first era was Peter “Lucky” Luscombe. He's known as the songwriter's drummer, because rather than trying to show off his chops, he always thinks, “How can I make this song sound great?” He's worked for decades as both a band member and as a session musician. Nowadays, he's most known for playing in Paul Kelly's band (3 decades and counting) and as the longest member of the Rockwiz Orkestra. If you hear his playing, you KNOW it's Lucky. He's also played for Stephen Cummings, Chris Wilson's band of the 90s post Crown Of Thorns, and Rebecca's Empire. I was thrilled to have one of my drumming heroes on the show as we discuss his career, how he approaches a drum part, what he loves about great songwriting, why Australian session musicians are behind the rest of the world in terms of remuneration for their work, why The Meters and Tower of Power are hugely important.....and much more. My thanks to Lucky for joining me on the show, and to Brian Nankervis for encouraging me to reach out to him for a chat. | 6/13/26 | ![]() Ugly American Werewolf in London: Duran Duran - 1981 & 1983 | Duran Duran's eponymous debut not only established their sound with funky bass and new wave synths but coincided with the launch of new US cable station, MTV. With their danceable beats, the boys stylish brand of new wave was perfect fot the 80s and perfect for MTV. It introduced a whole new generation of American music fans into Anglophiles including your hosts The Wolf & Action Jackson. We, like all of the MTV Generation, were not only grooving to John Taylor's funky bass but were fascinated by their fashion, haircuts and models that always seemed to find them. In the UK, they got on the charts and even went Top 10 in Australia with Planet Earth in the spring of 1981. But it was MTV that launched them to superstardom in the US. Simon LeBon's vocals complemented the textures coming from Nick Rhodes synths and Andy Taylor's guitar but his presence in the videos gave them a wider audience. The videos shot in Antigua for the Rio album are MTV greats but the macabre Night Boat was also filmed there and is creepier than Anyone Out There or Careless Memories. The Girls On Film video was censored in parts of the US and a racier edition could be found on Showtime, much to the delight of two young suburbanites. To give the US market more material in 1983 ahead of the Seven and the Ragged Tiger album which would come out in the fall, the debut was rereleased with a slightly different order and the new single Is There Something I Should Know? It went to #1 in the UK and went into heavy rotation on MTV, helping to drive the album platinum. We recall the first time seeing them on MTV, review the entire 1983 US version (with plenty of time for all the songs surrounding the debut) and rediscover some old faves.
