Woodyard, and Bunglers all over the world!This episode is lovingly dedicated In Memory of Barbara Dickerson, Karissa’s beloved grandmother, the heart of her family.Zack's Candyfruit Pie Recipe3 1/2 cups Anjou or Bartlett pears, large dice1 cup fresh strawberries, quartered2/3 cup sugar1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, minced (or food processed with the sugar!)1/4 tsp cinnamon1/8 tsp star anise1 tbsp grated fresh ginger1/2 tsp grated grapefruit zest3 tbsp instant (minute) tapiocaPastry for two pie crusts (one for base, one for lattice); store-bought is fine.1–2 tbsp unsalted butterAdditional sugar for sprinklingFood dye (optional)Combine fruit, sugar, herbs, spices and tapioca. Let rest for 30 minutes at room temperature, stirring occasionally. Optionally, add a few drops of green food dye.Preheat oven to 375ºF.Roll out one pie crust and lay into a 9" pie dish. It should hang over the edge some. Lay in filling and accumulated fruity liquid to a level height.Roll out the second pie crust (optionally adding pink or red food dye) and slice into 14–16 strips of even width, about 1/2".Lay the strips in a grid on top of the pie, lifting every other strip as you go, over–under, to form a woven lattice. BONUS: Skewing your grid at 45 degrees to form diamonds instead of squares makes for a fancier looking lattice!Cut off any strip excess that's hanging over the edge of the dish and then fold the bottom crust up over the strips, crimping them together all the way around.Place pea-sized cubes of unsalted butter at every lattice intersection and then sprinkle additional sugar along the lines of the lattice.Tent the rim of the dish with foil to protect the crust (don't fully cover it; aim for somewhere between a lampshade and a yurt) and bake for 35 minutes.Remove or untent the foil and continue baking for another 30–40 minutes. The pie is done when the crust has browned and, crucially, the filling is visibly bubbling all over, like Mumm-Ra's cauldron. Our favorite movie geek Rob returns to join Ryan and David as we tackle the uniquely charming and completely confusing TV holiday favorite "A Mom for Christmas" from 1990!We unpack all the big questions, starting with how Olivia Newton-John nearly burns down the main character’s house with absolutely no reaction...the neon glow, the harlequin doll themed department store chaos, and the oddly creepy moments that somehow still end up feeling warm and festive. Also, public safety tip from Radical Ones. Just don’t decorate your tree with real candles like Victorian London!Originally airing on NBC on December 17, 1990, this marked Olivia Newton-John’s very first made for TV movie and it truly lives in a holiday category all its own. Grab the cocoa, plug in the Christmas lights, and join us for magic mannequins, retail romance, holiday logic that makes no sense at all!"The story follows 11-year-old Jessica Slocum (played by Juliet Sorci), who lost her mother at a young age. With her father, Jim (Doug Sheehan), being a workaholic and emotionally distant, Jessica feels the absence of maternal love deeply. Just before Christmas, she wins a free wish from a wishing well and wishes for a mother. Her wish is granted when Amy Miller, a department store mannequin brought to life by Philomena (Doris Roberts), becomes her temporary mother figure. Lilith's declining grades and emotional distress raise concerns about her home life, leading Emily to investigate her family situation. Emily suspects that Lilith's parents are abusive and proposes to remove the child from their custody. The situation escalates dramatically when Emily discovers that Lilith's parents, Edward and Margaret, attempt to kill her by roasting her alive in their oven.
