The Washington Monthly called him as "one of America's most important journalists." The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy. Hey Friends I am still fighting a rare but tough cold and so I was not able to produce a news segment today but I do have a GREAT conversation with a brilliant first time guest that I think you will love I hope you had a great weekend and I am happy we made to to May together All of Atima's Links Named to Ebony Magazine's "Power 100" list of emerging leaders and Jet Magazine's "40 Under 40" list, Atima Omara works and leads at the intersection of electoral politics and issue advocacy in the progressive movement. She is a political strategist, advocate, trainer, leader, and speaker with significant political, government, and non-profit experience, and she is a sought-after commentator and strategist. As the President & Chief Strategist of Omara Strategy Group, she provides strategic consulting to progressive candidates and organizations centering women and people of color in their mission and work. She strategizes with candidates and political organizations to win victories for a more reflective progressive democracy. An American-born child of Black immigrants, Atima realized early the importance of catalyzing social and electoral change from both the grassroots and leadership levels—especially among underrepresented communities. She has worked as Special Assistant to then-Virginia Governor Mark Warner, and then went to work as an organizer in multiple states with a union and community organizations on voter registration, ballot initiatives, and get-out-the-vote operations in low-income communities of color and immigrant communities. She is also a former candidate for public and political party office herself, and draws from her lived and professional experience to train activists to organize and candidates from historically marginalized communities to run for office for many organizations including: Emerge America, Higher Heights for America, Vote Run Lead, Running Start, New American Leaders, and National Council for Independent Living. Prior to that, Atima built her executive leadership experience from serving as Vice President of Reproductive Health Technologies Project, a research based advocacy organization; a Director on the political project #VOTEPROCHOICE (VPC) where she managed successful voter engagement campaigns on behalf of VPC for progressive state and local candidates; and as a nationally elected leader of the Young Democrats of America (YDA), the nation's largest partisan youth organization from 2013-15. She was the first Black president and only the fifth woman to lead the organization in its 80+ year history. During her tenure as YDA President, she grew national membership and led an independent expenditure to targeted states in 2014 that increased the youth vote turnout for Democrats in critical races. She is an original board member for Emerge Virginia and a founding board member of Virginia's List PAC, two organizations helping to elect more Democratic women. She previously served as Board Chair and Vice Chair of the Planned Parenthood Metro Washington Action Fund. The seasoned political leader is currently an elected member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) since 2016 and elected vice chair of the DNC's Women's Caucus since 2017. Atima has published articles in American Prospect, The Root, Salon, Politico, Ms., Ebony, and The Lily (a Washington Post publication) among other notable publications and provided commentary to CNN, MSNBC/NBC, PBS, BBC, Fox News, Fox Business, NPR, Sirius XM, and other national TV & radio outlets. He has filed multiple lawsuits challenging a range of Trump administration anti-transgender executive orders. He is one of the nation's foremost experts on conversion therapy, helping to draft and pass legislation in states to protect LGBTQ youth and support survivors. He served as lead counsel in the landmark California marriage equality case, and he led NCLR's contributions to multiple Supreme Court cases, such as Pavan v. Smith, Obergefell v. Hodges, and Christian Legal Society v. Martinez. An appointee to President Obama's Commission on White House Fellowships, Shannon was one of the most senior transgender appointees in the Obama administration. He has taught law at UCLA, Stanford, Golden Gate University, and Santa Clara University. Shannon is currently counsel in six cases challenging the Trump administration's anti-transgender policies, including Talbott v. Trump, which seeks to restore the right of transgender Americans to serve openly in the armed forces. His work challenging anti-transgender military policies spans nearly a decade — he previously challenged the 2017 transgender military ban under the first Trump administration, and co-chaired the Planning Commission on Transgender Military Service, which produced a comprehensive study demonstrating that inclusive service policies are both administratively feasible and militarily beneficial. Shannon has been at the forefront of efforts to protect LGBTQ+ youth from conversion therapy. He founded NCLR's Born Perfect project, a national campaign to end conversion therapy through legislation, litigation, and public education. He has helped draft laws protecting LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy across the country and continues to advocate for legal remedies to hold practitioners accountable for the harm they cause, including through malpractice, consumer fraud claims, and professional licensing sanctions. Shannon was lead counsel for same-sex couples in the landmark California marriage equality case, which was the first state supreme court decision to hold that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry and that laws discriminating based on sexual orientation are subject to the highest level of constitutional scrutiny. He was also counsel for married same-sex couples from Tennessee in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision establishing marriage equality nationwide, and NCLR's lead attorney in Pavan v. Smith, a 2017 Supreme Court decision requiring equal treatment of same-sex parents, and in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, a U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding nondiscrimination policies based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2015, President Obama appointed Shannon to the President's Commission on White House Fellowships, making him one of the most senior transgender appointees in the Obama administration. Shannon called the appointment a reflection of the President's commitment to building a government that reflects the full diversity of the American people. He is co-editor of Transgender Rights (2006), the first comprehensive book on the transgender civil rights movement. He served in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia for 24 years, rising to the position of Chief of the Homicide Section. In that capacity, Glenn supervised 30 homicide prosecutors and oversaw all homicide grand jury investigations and prosecutions in Washington, DC. Prior to joining the DC U.S. Attorney's Office, Glenn served more than six years on active duty as an Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) prosecutor, trying court-martial cases and handling criminal appeals, including espionage and death penalty cases. Glenn tried hundreds of cases in his 30 years as a prosecutor, including more than 50 murder trials, multiple lengthy RICO trials and precedent-setting cases.
